It Completely Boggles Me.
But soft! What rock through yonder window breaks? It is a brick! And Juliet is out cold.Since there are so many people voting for "Random Musings" and a similar number of people voting for "Don't change it", the most sensible option I can see is to leave IJAM the way it is and replace IJBM with Random Musings, that way everyone is happy.
Visit my contributor page to assist with the "I Like The Cheeses" project! You could start threads without being told "this belongs in [megathread #3B]!". At least, that's the only difference I care about.
Also, it would hopefully preserve some of the sillier nature of IJBM.

Heapers’ HangoutYackfest is working on being less insistent on megathreading. The distinction is now, "do you want to just vent, or do you want a discussion about that specific thing?"
But there were a few people who came over to YF immediately after the announcement with some personal life complaints and had a handful of responses to the effect of, "this belongs either in Romance or the Angst thread."
Really, if you use "there's a megathread this goes in" as an argument against starting new topics, there is seriously zero room for new threads, as anything that isn't a question, complaint, relationship thing, or personal angst has three or four "anything else" conversation threads. Which ones you use are basically based on the subcommunity inside. I started out in Post Your Random Thoughts, but I got bored with it and now I'm only in the Crotchety Old Bitches thread.

Fresh-eyed movie blog^^^Does that actually happen on Yack Fest? I haven't seen it much.

Infinite Tree: an experimental storyCentral Avenue: The reason would be that we'd still have the "IJAM doesn't get much activity" problem, while also introducing the "Random Musings is no different from Yack Fest" problem.
But yes, "Not many people use it" is a lousy reason to get rid of a forum. Unless we actually had an active problem of too many forums to find the one you wanted, we shouldn't be worrying about forum culling.
And if we're going to worry about dead weight, why does The Academy Role Playing Game need its own forum separate from Role Playing? And why does the MIT Puzzle Hunt need three forums, one of which is empty and one of which has one thread and five posts?

I really, really don't understand why we would need three different arbitrary discussion boards.
People don't usually get directed to megathreads in yack fest unless their thread is especially pointless. Threads that have been made in yack fest and worked fine include What is the stupidest thing you have clicked on
, private messaging
, and so I just figured out I owe my religion to a bottle of soap
, from active threads today.
I also don't understand why people won't post in megathreads anyway.
[1] This facsimile operated in part by synAC.The MIT Puzzle hunt is a special purpose forum for people who are interested in taking part in the MIT Puzzle hunt. It's basically empty because this year's Puzzle Hunt hasn't started yet so there's nothing to talk about.
The Academy got it's own subforum because it isn't simply a single roleplay thread and a discussion thread. There were a lot more when the subforum was made that have been lost to old-thread wipes and such.
And to be perfectly blunt, a fair bit of this determination to change the other subforums is coming off as "you're getting rid of IJBM, you have to mess around with the others too." to me.

Aaand the Puzzle Hunt needs three forums why? Aaand the Academy couldn't just be four threads in the Role Playing forum why?
I'm not actually arguing that either of these should go away; their presence isn't harming me. But I also think that IJAM's presence isn't harming people who don't post there, so the whole argument comes down to "you're not using the forums as often/in the way that I want."
The reasonable contingent of the response that I'm seeing is, "you're destroying a community hub because of some bad apples, where's the nearest acceptable watercooler?" Most of this discussion is, "you took out a major tentpole, let's reexamine the rest of the structure."
That was way too many different metaphors that should not be mixed.
But there are definitely people saying "hmmph. if I can't have fun, nobody else can."
Fresh-eyed movie blogAlso, right now, IJBM and Yack Fest each have their own sort of community (even if there is a significant overlap between the two). IJAM...doesn't, really. But it would be nice to see one form.

Heapers’ HangoutThere's this thread
that happened not too long after the IJBM announcement. I have a feeling that may have scared off more people from making topics.

The Soup Bowl has 3 subforums in preparation for the puzzles. They might need a lot of discussion. And the Academy Role Playing Game used to be a lot bigger. It got hit hard by the thread purge which is why it's only 4 threads.
For what?
