Ok, I am currently replaying Leaf Green (Plus a finished XD play finished last month and I have finished Soul Silver a few months ago) and have had a great deal of fun in all of them (less so XD) using Pokemon lines I normally wouldn't use.

Pick me some odd, but useable (no Luvdisc) Pokemon to use. I have alreddy decided on Spoink for 1 slot and 2 slots are likely going to HM slaves, but who should get the other 3 slots?

The following are absolutely off limits, having used these in either my Leaf Green playthrough or my XD playthrough: Charmander line Butterfree line Poliwag line Diglet line Jolteon Houndour Larvitar line Ralts line Spheal line.

I would preferably not use any of these, having used these in the relatively recent Soul Silver, I would like to not use them again. Espeon Dratini line Magby line Beldum line

Any breedable Pokemon of the 386 useable in Generation 3 I can use, but again, I prefer things I haven't used ever but are in-fact usable.

Here's some choices: Flygon, Forretress, Heracross, Salamence, and Starmie. Want more options?

How's about a Baltoy, Cacnea-Cacturne or a Manectric? Maybe something from the Clamperl Line? A Dustox?

Magneton's a good special attacker.

Magneton is awful in gen 3 in-game use though (otherwise he would be in the 5th slot of my Leaf Green team right now), his only attack type is electric.

Thunderwave and Thunderbolt make a good combo though.

Milotic's also a good special wall. Good luck finding a Feebas though. I'd save you the suffering and send you one, but Gen 3 doesn't have wireless.

Good thing I have a complete Pokdex in Emerald :) (I have no life). Getting it to evolve would be a pain though.

Magneton do learn Tri-Attack, though- wait, Normal attacks are Physical in that game.

I have a message from another time...

It's a hassle to train, but Lileep can evolve into a pretty nice wall ingame.

Plus, it's adorable.

Others I like: Swablue/Altaria line, Makuhita/Hairiama, Whismur/Loudred/Exploud, Wingull/Pelipper (I actually managed to get some use out of Pelipper, somehow).

So far I think I might go for

  • Spoink (Icy Wind and Shock Wave are a pretty cool combo)
  • Cacnea
  • Heracross

So far Bug, and grass (Fire as well, but less so thanks to Spoink's thick fat) are the only weaknesses another of the pair doesn't cover. Obviously that means something with a flying/fire type move covers the first two...

Ice also works. Glalie needs a friend...:( As for fire and flying types you might want to use...

Hoenn fire-types:

  • Blaziken
  • Camerupt
  • Magcargo (grin)
  • Torkoal
  • Ninetales

Hoenn flying-types:

  • Beautifly
  • Swellow
  • Pelipper
  • Masquerian
  • Ninjask
  • Crobat
  • Dodrio
  • Skarmory
  • Altaria
  • Tropius

Oh, and Gyarados, but he doesn't learn any flying moves.

I'm not restricted to Hoenn Pokes. The national dex is automatically obtained upon trading from FRLG or an emerald with it. I'm going to be breeding and trading eggs in.

I could also try a rock and ice combo, wonder if anything gets both...

edit: hmm, Piloswine gets both, but is hit hard by the lack of physical/special classing and can't pull it off.

Round it out with Golduck, Camerupt, Altaria.

I'm limited to 1 more (need 2 HM slaves, Golduck will likely be one of them though)

Hmm, what can counter bug flying and fire... Well any rock type (or anything that learns a rock move)

Aerodactyl may work, though it isn't as... esoteric as I'd like, as is Bagon.

Ah! Cubone! My favorite Pokemon of the first gen. Learns AA (like everything else in gen 3) and Ancient Power/Rock Slide

I'm trying to figure out what AA means, as the only move that comes to mind is Acid Armor, and that can't be right.

Also Magcargo has type advantage on Flying, Fire, and Bug, and has a wonky support movepool and stat distribution. I've never used him in any of my runs but now that I think of it, I'm curious.

Magcargo

Useful for hatching eggs.

I'd suggest Skarmory, it is a good physical wall, but it's weak to fire.

How about Armaldo? It's a pretty good physical attacker.

Ralts appear in the route east of Petalburg. Takes a while to see one and it needs to be babysat at first, but totally worth the effort to get a solid Psychic that early on.

Also, Carvanha/Sharpedo hit like trucks.

Doh. I fail.

I maintain Carvanha/Sharpedo though.

^ But boy does it hit hard. I've seen mine oneshot dudes several levels above without even having a type advantage.
