But they still needed Teepo, otherwise they wouldn't have taken him in Xian Du.

Okay, something that's been bugging me for a while, but anyone know why Milla is outleveling Jude? I'm playing Jude's story, and while it started as just Milla being slightly over Jude's level, the EXP gap has grown to several hundred EXP as of late, and I have no idea why.

Thankfully, I had quicksaved. And now, more sidequests!

Milla reminisces about her childhood and that one time she met human kids whil the Four were on a special mission 14 years ago. And Alvin repeats that. FORESHADOWING, how I smell thee.

The ocean reminds him of his hometown. Wonder where he's from. Oh well, more carrier pidgeon for the totally not traitorous mercenary. Milla already knows he's a traitor and it doesn't take much to figure what's in those letters. Why doesn't she stop him? Oh, and we finally learn what spyrix is. Milla's aspyrixis is totally unrelated, hmmmm?tongue

I assume Alvin grew up in Xian Du, since that's where his mother lives. I also assume that his actual hometown is Trigleph, because that's by the sea.

Alfric? You still there? I know Jude and Milla went onto some facility to stop a superweapon and Milla got depowered, then Alvin joined as a money grubbing merc. Played any more? These guys above speak like they know the game inside out, and you know... a full page of spoilered posts can be unnerving.

The Strongest Tales Character poll is fun, though. But where are the females? I know for a fact that some Tales girls are stronger than their male companions. So to kill boredom and give posters something to talk about here goes: the Strongest Tales Ladies List!

Press here for the list (ULTRA SPOILERS)

  • Meredy (Eternia): She has the potential to inherit Nereid's Aurora, a dark version of Reid's Aurora Artes. With it she can throw Eternal Finality and kill everyone dead no questions asked. Only Reid's power, granted by God Seifert can turn a Hopeless Boss Battle into a mere Puzzle Boss.
  • Shirley (Legendia): Another one who can tap into an angry god's powers, the Raging Nerifes. It posseses her and turns her into her race's version of the Legendary Super Saiyan. Even if she didn't have that, her sister showed us what a mastered Teriques (spirit wings) can do for you.
  • Sophie: (Graces): Some kind of nanomachine colony created to search and destroy another angry, Body Surf happy virulent spirit. And she would have succeeded: she is monstrously strong, able to heal herself and copy her friends' artes. And now the virulent spirit is on her side. Gulp.
  • Reala (Destiny 2): Said to be a reincarnated goddess, a powerful mage and was able to cheat death. A plot-induced, unescapable-by-design Final Death. Also, a splurge of Mary Sue tropes...
  • Milla (Xillia): If she is really Maxwell she controls the Four Elemental Spirits, so just as strong as summoners go. She also controls the 'Matter' Element, the opposite of the 'Time' element and equally strong as the Eternal Swordsman. No wonder she is called a 'female Dhaos'.
  • Colette (Symphonia): The puppy-kicking, fully formed Angel Mode Colette is terrifying. She is second only to Lloyd's Angelus Exphere, as hers is a complete Cruxis Crystal which gives super strenght (carried Regal) pain resistance (coffee scene) and a varied array of Angelic Artes.
  • Marta (Symphonia 2): A toss up between her and Tear. She has faster run speed, blah blah blah Photon, better physical artes, Ratatosk's protection (?) and her Mystic Arte heals the party. Both can heal, so the battle would go on forever...
  • Tear (Abyss): A toss up between her and Marta. She has better range with knifes, access to Spell Save (Glory for mages?) can set up her own Fonon Changes and a damaging, instant Pikohan.
  • Rutee (Destiny): Well... for a sword user she is not very strong. She is a hybrid Thief-Mage, which means poor defenses. She has ranged offense as well as healing, though. Fast mobility... and that's it. She is still beat by everyone ahead of her on this list.
  • Estelle (Vesperia): She is essentially Mint in a knight armor. That gives her some offensive capacity as well as healing and some light spells. Better than Phantasia's nurse, but not by much. It's a pity she doesn't show all that durability out of Yuri's boss battle agaisnt her.
  • Mint (Phantasia): Can heal wounds, cure diseases and stun with Pikohan. And maybe stop time. No offensive skills whatsoever. In remakes Pikohan DOES damage, but this is Original Mint.
  • Clare (Rebirth): Ahem... 1) She is kind of a human popsicle. 2) She is not playable. Whoops.

[up][up] Oooops, sorry. I'm not very far in, since I just got all my party members, but I can do a summary of what has happened so far. Spoiler-tagging it just in case:

After our trio reaches Auj Oule, Milla decides she must return to Nia Khera, her village, to summon back her spirits. Jude is impressed with her and because he is now a wanted criminal, he follows along with Alvin.

The trio reaches a small village called Hamil, where the people warmly welcome them and offer them a free stay. But before they can get very far, Rashugal soldiersnote  barge in and attempt to arrest them. They manage to get away when Elize uses her doll to distract the soldiers, but she doesn't follow the party just yet.

Despite their succesful escape, Jude doesn't feel very well with himself since they abandoned those hospitable villagers and a little girl to the hands of some very angry foreign soldiers. Milla, however, retorts that she's willing to go to any lengths to complete her mission and protect the world. Seeing her determination, Jude backs down.

On the way to Nia Khera, they are attacked by this lady who needs new clothes. She begins searching for something Milla has and makes some dirty comments about Alvin, but when questioned about it, he claims not to know her. They manage to get away with the help of a giant crab and reach Nia Khera.

Milla tries to perform a ritual to resummon the Four spirits, but it fails. It turns out that the Four are apparently captive after they were absorbed in that device. We meet her handmaid, Ivar, who is totally crushing on Milla and gets pissed that Jude gets to accompany her and blames him for everything that's happened. Milla rebukes his accussations and tells him to protect the village while she infiltrates Rashugal again to free the Four.

Before the trio crosses over to Rashugal, they return to Hamil. They come across an ugly site-the villagers are attacking Elize with sticks and stones. The villagers are pretty pissed because the outsiders brought them trouble, while they consider Elize cursed or something. They only let her stay in the village because "Chief Jiao" wants her there, keeping her locked in a shed all day. Anyway, Jude wants to take her along and find her a house where she'll be happier.

They return to Rashugal, only to find there are military checkpoints everywhere. They cross some woods, where they're attacked by Jiao, who wants Elize back. Elize says no, and uses her spirit artes to help them get away. Also, she has an adorable talking, flying doll named Teepo.

The four now get to the city of Sharilton, a province of Rashugal, and coincidentally become friends with Driselle, the sister of Lord Cline, ruler of Sharilton. Driselle invites them for tea, but while they're talking, Alvin rats them out and reveals they're wanted criminals. Cline confronts them and asks what they found out when they broke into the capital's lab. Milla says the king is constructing a spyrix weapon known as the Lance of Kresnik, and he must be stopped. Mistrusting the king, Cline agrees.

Before they can hatch a plan, some of Cline's subjects are kidnapped and taken to Bermia Gorge. He rushes after them in an attempt to rescue them. Rowen, his butler, asks for the party's help, so they all run after Cline to Bermia Gorge. Once they get there, they find that an experiment is conducted: Mana is being drained from the citizens in an attempt to create some spirit weapon. They interrupt the experiment and release the lesser spirits along with Cline and his citizens.

They return to Sharilton to rest for a day or so, but before they can leave, Milla, Elize and Driselle are arrested by soldiers and Cline is killed by an assassin. The boys race to Fort Gandala to rescue the girls, only to find Gilland, the head of the experiments, running another experiment where he drains humans of mana in the presence of King Nachtigal. Milla gets pissed and chases after the king, calling him out on sacrificing his own subjects for the sake of war. She attacks him, depsite the fact that there's an explosive device on her legs set to to go off if she crosses certain areas of the fort.

The king manages to get away, but at least the girls are safe. Milla, however, has her legs paralyzed and can't walk due to the explosion. Jude decides to leave the others behind and take Milla to his hometown, the isle of Leronde where his father might cure her. Touched by his kindness, Milla hands him a pendant. When they get to the port, Ivar shows up and is majorly pissed at Jude for allowing Milla to get hurt. They get into a fight over who will accompany her, at which point an exasperated Milla decides to go off on her own, even if that means she has to crawl her way past them. The boys knock it off, and Milla orders Ivar to return to Nia Khera after entrusting him with the key their enemies are looking for.

When they get to Jude's place, his father refuses to help Milla, because he lacks the things needed to make the device that could cure her work. Jude stands up to him for the first time in his life, and goes with Milla and his childhood friend, Leia, to a nearby mine. There, they excavate the materials needed for the aspyrixis device to cure Milla, but are attacked by a monster. Leia jumps in the fight head-first, but when the fight proves too tough, Milla slaps the aspyrixis on her leg. It hurts a lot, but now she can walk again, so she kicks the monster's ass before she passes out.

When they return to the city, Jude's father slaps him and berates him for his carelessness, but Milla stops him, saying she owes Jude and that now she can walk. She spends 3 weeks in physical therapy, and when they're about to depart, Alvin, Elize and Rowen show up to pay a visit. After a bit of arguing, the group decides to travel together again. At night, we see Alvin talking to Jude's dad, asking for the location of the spyrix key. Initially reluctant since he feels he owes Milla for helping Jude mature, the doc eventually says Ivar might have it.

Are they free for a time at the start, and if not, how much are they?

Also, I'll be doing a writeup tomorrow at some point hopefully Flight, if Lu's plot summary doesn't suffice (not reading it, due to spoilers, but I'll leave that to you), but I just played Xillia with my friends, and I'll need some time to write it up as well as do other things tonight.

@Female Leads' Powers: Sounds about right, though I might say Milla could take Sophie, and this should really only include the powers they possess, so Meredy should be a bit lower, seeing as she doesn't actually tap into the power of the Dark Aurora (from what I know).

I'd actually put Milla near the top, since she becomes Maxwell by the end of the game, and is thus basically a god.

Milla Maxwell is top banana. According to skits, she accidentally mastered swordsmanship while trying to learn the fundamentals, and can cast magic without a chant/contract by threatening spirits with her mana. Which is actually more impressive when you realize she's not actually Maxwell.

Milla, however, retorts that she's willing to go to any lengths to complete her mission and protect the world. Seeing her determination, Jude backs down.

To add to this slightly: Milla kind of encourages Jude to go back and do it himself if he cares so much. "Backing down" is exactly the opposite of what her retort was meant to accomplish, since a big part of her character is that people should make their own decisions and act on them decisively. If Jude truly wants to just follow her around then that's fine, but it should always be because he wants to.

So what are the cameos? (I know Milla has Stahn, Asbel and Dhaos at least)

Whoa, Lu's summary is pretty good. Leaves out many details but is pretty useful. Why has no one thought of just writing the game's diary entries here? (Oh right... Game FAQS)

So, the females... you know, Sophie was made to destroy an evil spirit. Even so far as having a nanite healing option to keep trying in case of failure, and an arte copy option to improve her chances. If Milla = Maxwell = a spirit, she beats the blondie. And if she is NOT Maxwell... you're only helping my case. I think of her as a cutified Technadon golem.

Mmm, I put Meredy there because in the ending she DOES use Nereid's power, at the same time Reid uses Seyfert's, and the resulting reaction gives the planets a push so hard that not only they won't collide, but they will be separated forever. It means: 'when this is over, where will you settle down?' So she CAN use it, but needed to be guided by Keele there.

Basically, Gods > mortals with godly powers > spirit-slayer cyborgs > spirits > people with spirit powers / summoners > time / molecular powers > magic knights > mages (with insta-cast or Glory?) > regular knights > martial artists > armed healers.

[up][up]I think you're a bit confused because in Xillia Maxwell is a god. As in "Maxwell created the world, is worshiped by the populace, omnipotent creator-deity." It's a bit more important to the plot than it usually is. Frankly I find the idea that she's being compared to a mere nanomachine weapon insulting. The scale is just different and weird perks like "back-up in case of failure" seems almost irrelevant in the face of Milla coming back from the dead just because.

In Xillia, spirits are like...

I can't think of an appropriate simile. Fonons, perhaps? Anyway, Maxwell rules over all the spirits, which means she basically controls all the world's mana. Which is important.

Fonons are a good way to look at it. They're the fundamental building blocks of the world that allow anyone to do anything. Even martial artes use spirits, somehow. And Maxwell controls all those spirits. So she can do anything using the power of technobabble.
