I think that being a musician is more about watching, listening, and doing, than reading.
[1] This facsimile operated in part by synAC.Wicked: Do you know how to read music? I'd recommend getting a beginning methods book at a music store. After you've learned where the notes are, you can start trying to play songs that you like. After that try playing them by ear. Then start making some for yourself. Once you've built up enough confidence, join a band.
Video Game Census. Please contribute.I currently play tenor sax in the regional jazz orchestra and I sometimes play in the university big band. The latter is pretty bad, though, because it doesn't have any decent trumpet players, which are really essential for this kind of ensemble. I did play alto sax in the school band until the guy in charge asked me to switch to tenor, because there were about nine other people in the alto section (who were all fucking terrible, by the way; I'm not saying that to be arrogant or anything, I'm just stating a fact).
I would like to play something in a band, though I've never had much opportunity. I honestly wouldn't know where to start.
re: Aevum Nova - that is some good shit.
Does anyone know of anything on the internet that's good for teaching yourself keyboard?
With cannon shot and gun blast smash the alien. With laser beam and searing plasma scatter the alien to the stars. If you don't want a teacher at all? you're going to have to rely on video lessons-
It's not exactly naive. And it can happen. But it's tough. And definetly worthwhile.I'm self taught on the keys, been estimated as a decent grade if I brushed up. I know my way around writing a verse or two, I'm also a tenor, and always had a thing for harmonies. I did well in Music tech, and learnt enough music theory to get started composing and sequencing properly with a bunch of decent sw platforms. All of this has come in useful volunteering for a youth music project, doing workshops on producing and writing mainly hip hop and rap.
My output reflects my tastes in that I don't stick to a specific genre or style. Haven't really recorded or composed anything properly for a couple of years, but I suppose I should collate my old stuff in one online place, since I do get asked about it from time to time.
Given how many threads there are about it, I'm leaning towards 'yes'.
...is out to lunch.I recently started guitar lessons. Good fun so far, though I feel as though I should have made a bit of an effort to learn some of the extended chords, because I do know music theory and I'm sure it wouldn't have been hard to find the relevant charts.
I know how to play the guitar and mandolin, mostly self taught.
I've played the drums for seven years. It's my main instrument. Hopefully I'll be recording an album with one of my bands later this year, and I've got a rough song I recorded 4 or 5 months ago lying around waiting for proper production... it's a shame, I could probably do a better job of the drum parts now :P
I also play the keyboard (badly) and sing (slightly less badly).
I'm a halfway decent violist and occasionally write music that sounds like the bastard child of Berg and Debussy, except not as good as either.
I play the synthesizer (I own an Alesis Micron Analog Modeling Synthesizer) and the keyboard piano. I do make music. I have quite a lot of instrumental synthpop songs stored up because I don't have a recording studio or equipment good enough to record my voice with. It sounds silly when you use a cheap mic. :(
Just lo-fi your music and everything should match up.
Can you show me some of your music? Sounds interestin'.
I spread my wings and I learn how to fly....Any troper musicians taking the RPM challenge next month? Basically you've got to record an "album" (a minimum of 10 tracks or 20 minutes) in a month. I've done it the past couple years and plan on doing it again - despite being a fairly bad singer with no idea how to go about writing lyrics, I may even try to mostly do songs with vocals for the first time. Maybe lyrically I'll take most of my cues from the Music Tropes page or something.
Earth is the only planet inhabitable by Nicolas Cage. That sounds like an awesome idea! I've always wanted to try and write my own music rather than just gobbing off about the stuff I listen to. I can guarantee that I will fail, and I will only be able to take part after the 4th when I've completed my enormous university workload. But God damn it I will try. If I even write one half decent song I will consider it an achievement.
Listen to Music with Tropers at The Troper Turntable!I was initially put off by the fact that pre-written/recorded tracks are disallowed, as I have several WI Ps that I need incentive to finish, but I guess it would be fun to churn out a completely new album for my main side project (especially given that the album I'm currently working on for said project has now been extended to the point that it could take months to finish).
Because I choose to.I wonder if it's in any way affiliated with the people who run Na No Wri Mo or Script Frenzy...?
You can't even write racist abuse in excrement on somebody's car without the politically correct brigade jumping down your throat! They mention Na No Wri Mo on their website, and similar musical limited time challenges, but I don't think they're affiliated-with, just inspired-by.
Listen to Music with Tropers at The Troper Turntable!Alrighty then...
I'd really really really really like to participate, but I have not the resources, or the time, or the know-how...
You can't even write racist abuse in excrement on somebody's car without the politically correct brigade jumping down your throat!Electronic music allowed y/n?
I spread my wings and I learn how to fly....I don't see any reason why it wouldn't be.
You can't even write racist abuse in excrement on somebody's car without the politically correct brigade jumping down your throat! That might count as "pre recorded".
I spread my wings and I learn how to fly....I've already heard some great electronic stuff on the 2010 sampler, so it's definitely allowed.
It's not exactly a formal thing, so you don't have to pay too much attention to the rules anyway.

Because I choose to.Alright.
I can start now and have something by the end of the month.
I spread my wings and I learn how to fly....
I play trombone and euphonium, and I dabble in keyboard percussion, playing marimba in indoor percussion.
Here's a link to our concert band at our 2010 winter concert, in which I play euph, playing "Moon of Winter" (The first part is the concert band, 2nd part chorus.) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P-4FX_ZyPIg Our concert band is rather small. 3 flutes, 2 clarinets, 2 alto saxes, a tenor sax, a bari, 4 trumpets, a trombone and a euph. 4 percussionists, as well.
Jazz band (I play Trombone I): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q54SXm9ZvWQ
2010 Johnstown Gnomon Indoor Percussion: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nyc_zGcUwXA "Variations of Canon" I'm right next to the synth.
