I require names of philosophers/historical geniuses. I have already used up the names: Hobbes, Locke, Smith (Adam Smith), Vinci, Marx.

These are the Japanese philosophers who have a Wikipedia page. You could also try sorting through this page or this page.

For the setting, presumably when the mages were in charge, there were names for the mages/upper class and non-mages/lower class. Then when the non-mages overthrew them, they might have named the country after themselves. For instance, if the classes were called the Maegi and the Plebians, they might have named the country Plebia.

Oh that's great, I'll try this, too...

What I need is a chemical-sounding name for a drug.

It's main feature: It locks people out of the hivemind of a special group of women, so the woman in question can have some alone-time. Disadvantage: It also blocks their emotional connection to their memories.

If possible, the name shouldn't be too stupid, I don't want to get that freshman chemistry student giggling all over my text.

The two most important things to consider are the context in which the drug was produced and the composition of the drug. Actual chemical names are compound words that describe the exact composition of the substance in question, and are often quite lengthy. Shorter abbreviations sometimes exist; for instance, ecstasy is properly termed MDMA, which stands for 3,4-methylenedioxy-N-methylamphetamine. (This is the kind of name most likely to get you giggled at if done wrong.)

Many chemicals are also given common names, which usually tell you something about their components. For example, cocaine is "coca" (the plant from which it was derived) + the suffix "-ine" (which in this context simply indicates that it's a basic substance).

If a drug saw general use prior to being studied by modern chemistry, its common name will be less indicative, e.g. alcohol, tobacco. Additionally, drugs produced commercially will be marketed under trademark names, e.g. Aspirin, Heroin. Where drugs are prohibited, slang or "street" names tend to evolve, like poppers, shrooms and moonshine.

If magic/superpowers in general actually existed, what would be a good name for a MegaCorp that dealt with magical applications?

Re drugs.

Look for a drug (Google) that has the sort of effects that you want. Then look at the trademarked versions of that drug, that will give you some sort of idea - the trademark names are often derived from the chemical name, making families of drugs obvious.

For example, I needed a pain killer with specific side effects. I found Fentanyl http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fentanyl fitted the bill. I looked at the products derived from it and called the patch given to my character Pamtrifen, making it a 'new' drug. I then expositioned it

Val retrieved her phone from her hand-bag. “I texted a doctor friend of mine. He passed it on to someone he knows who’s an expert in the field, who sent me a message. Can you get the box, just to check I’ve got the right name.”

Gabe walked into his bedroom, and came back with the packet. “Pamtrifen. Is that it?”

Val read from her phone. “Proprietary name for a new patch version of Fentanyl. Designed for immediate pain relief, lasting up to six hours.” She looked at Gabe, who nodded. “Medical opiate, approved by NICE three months ago – some follow up being undertaken. Possible side effects of Fentanyl include diarrhoea, nausea, constipation, dry mouth, somnolence, confusion, weakness, and sweating. Less frequently, abdominal pain, headache, fatigue, anorexia and weight loss, dizziness, nervousness, hallucinations, anxiety, depression, flu-like symptoms, indigestion, breathing difficulties, and urinary retention. Fentanyl use has also been associated with aphasia.” She looked at Gabe, “I’m not interested in your toilet habits, but does confusion, anxiety and depression sound about right?”

[up][up]It was started in the mid-90's, around the time an Alternate Dimension with different metaphysics "collided" with our universe and made everyone into (varyingly limited) Reality Warpers. Its kind of the equivalent of Google, except its become the most powerful corporation in the world with a vast multitude of investments and subsidiaries in just about everything you can think of. And its not as corrupt/unethical/etc.

It tends to follow the whole Apple aesthetic of sleek and user-friendly goods, and is known for being one of, if not the, most innovative organizations in the ways it's been able to find (profitable) uses of magic. As for how its seen, the average person probably thinks of it in the same way gamers tend to think of Valve (i.e. awesomesauce on legs). The "Here to help." logo/enforced company policy probably helps with that.

There also two other rival companies whose names I haven't figured out yet, so help with them as well would be appreciated.

[down]They're actually not evil. In fact, it can probably be considered the "goodest" of the three.

Also, thanks for the names. Have an [awesome].

[up] Sounds like a cool story. I hope though that one of those rival companies helps the good guys. Otherwise you get the tired old Evil Inc. trope. As for names, what about:

Thaumoturgy Unlimited (serving your counter-physical needs since the 1852)

Miracle (we're here when you need one)

Kadabra (Your wish is our command)

Poof! (we make things happen)

International Thaumoturgic Solutions (ITS) (Solutions for a fractured planet)

Yew, or Oak, or Rowan or another mystical plant (read Apple) (We are Yew)

okay, last one

Pixiedust Inc. (We help you soar)

Hey again, guys!

So, I've started off a new story. The framing device is an Edwardian-esque Historical Fiction writer talking to an aging scholar about a really prominent period in their country's history - a period when the commoners rose up, overthrew the monarchy, and then basically went on a conquering rampage that only ended when most of the other countries banded together and grinded them down through a massive war. The story starts, at first, when the villain protagonist kills the hero antagonist king, but then the historian is asked to go back to how 'X' era started.

I need a name for this period; the nation is similar to Edwardian England with significantly more Anglo-Saxon influence. IT has to be something 'era', but other then that, I'm open.

What about translating some historical era-names into their Old English equivalents.

The Niwcenning, or Newcenning, or Recenning, or Rebirth (rather than the renaissance) The Ymbhwyrft, ymbcierran, or Overturn (rather than Revolution) The Standanning, or the Uprising. The nebbianning, or the Confrontation.

I kind of like The Overturn or the Uprising, myself.

[up][up]The Commonrise Era, maybe.

The Newcenning Era sounds pretty good. Ymbcierran is abit hard to read and say, and Standannig is abit too German-esque (I know Anglo-Saxon is a Germanic language, but Standannig sounds too MODERN German).

Still, it's not really ringing with me. The Fyrd Era comes to mind, but the majority of my common army are made up of professional soldiers (the idea being that the country had just lost a war, thereby giving them plenty of out-of-work veterans). I'm no Anglo-Saxon scholar, but I'm taking all names, as Anglo-Saxon is primarily used for nouns (because I don't know German).

I need to change the name 'Felicity Sparshot' (because the person called Felicity Sparshot may well complain!)

I've joked some one called this sounds like she is the wife of Captain Sparshot, RN, who sails under Nelson, while his wife stays home and supervises the servants. The sting is she is really an agent of His Majesty's Government, uncovering dastardly Frenchie plots, while her oblivious husband never actually manages to come to grips with their fleet, as they keep running away.

Standannig doesn't even remotely sound German. Just thought you should know.

[up] I'm pretty sure it should be spelled "Standanni Ng" Like "The Standing."

Sorry, I didn't get that you actually wanted the word "Era" in there. I think (someone who actually knows what they are talking about is free to help me here) that you will need a genitive ending for the Anglisc word you use. So it would be Newcenninges Era or Era Newcenninges (it's like apostrophe s in modern English).

Anyway if you're going for an olde-worlde European flavor, why do you want to use Era? European history doesn't have many Eras. It's all about capital-letter nouns: The Renaissance, the Enlightenment, the Revolution, the World War. When I hear Era (and I don't think of dinosaurs :) I think of Asian history, since Era is sometimes used as a translation of jidai or shiqi (時代) as in "The Warring States Era" (sengoku jidai). Maybe that's just me.

Well, to me it bloody well does. Everything is relative.

And I'm going with era primarily as sort of a standardised way of categorising the history, sort of similar to how in Dragon Age, each 'Age' is defined by something momentous that happened at the end of the last one or the start of the first. It's more similar to how Victorian Scholars noted 400AD to 1066AD as 'The Dark Ages', and 1066AD to about 1500AD as 'The Middle Ages'.
