1) Maybe.

2) I'm not sure if "Thunderfist" comes off as something somebody would actually get called.

I have a Space Opera set in the future. One character is leader of a military and has several Generals below him in rank, thus I need a rank that is above that of General. I don't want something that is too complex/wordy. Simpler is better. When other people refer to the character they're not going to say "Supreme Commander of the Milky Way" every time, and saying just "Commander" doesn't properly convey how high the rank is.

"Fleet General"? "Army General"? If my understanding is correct, such General X or X General formulations are often used to define ranks above "General".

In addition to the above, a quick look at Wikipedia's article on "General" suggests the rank of "Marshal"/"Field Marshal" above it.

Full-fledged generals aren't actually that common in modern militaries: there are only 18 four-star generals in the US Army right now, for instance.

Think of them as less like managers and more like members of a board of directors: their job isn't to command troops on the field from day to day, but to make and review policies in the department they're responsible for (logistics, training, force deployment, modernisation and so on) and also to decide which direction the military is heading towards.

The jobs of commanding bases and deployed units, from brigade to corps level, typically falls to lower general officer ranks. In the US Army, these would be lieutenant generals (three-star), major generals (two-star) and brigadier generals (one-star). Other militaries might have different designations, like the "colonel general" in the Russian Army or the "corps general" in the French Army.

But the bottom line is: if your military is anything like a modern-day First World military, then your character would most likely hold the rank of a general, while his subordinates hold lesser general officer ranks. Same thing applies if you're basing it off modern naval ranks (fleet admiral/admiral/vice admiral/rear admiral).

Note that officers of the same rank can still be stratified according to their actual job. For example, the most senior position in the entire US military is the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, which is currently held by General Mark Milley, a four-star Army general. The Chairman's job is to advise the President on military matters; so while he theoretically doesn't get to tell the other generals what to do, he has a direct line to the President, who gets to do just that.

I need a british first name that sounds good with surname Shockley. Gender doesn't matter because i generally decide a character's gender the last.

Looking for a term to describe when four monarch, a sibling set of two kings and two queens, all ruled jointly at the same time. I'm trying to find something besides tetrarchy.

[up][up] Abraham, Cliff, Bernard, Abigail, Cathleen, Estelle?

Also, hi. Before I ask, "what's a good name," here's context:

The base name and nature of my story's monsters are called Wraiths. They are Invisible to Normals Eldritch Abominations that are able to use the Winds of Destiny, Change! to make human deaths seem like accidents or products of fate. In reality, they are murdering human people to absorb their souls to survive, erasing normal people from the cycle of life and death. Even though you can call them the Mooks of the story, they're more dangerous, stronger, and craftier than the trope implies.

I need a good name for an advanced class of said Wraiths, ones that have consumed enough souls and/or lived long enough to grow. Can be a simple (but cool) adjective or a new noun altogether.

Edit: What would be a good supervillain name for an assassin with the power to restart time? To clarify, they can activate their power, designating a certain length of time for their "loop" to last. If they would die, or they decide to restart, before the duration ends, they go back to the position and time when they activated the loop. The second time around, they cannot use the loop until the full duration set the first time has ended. Any injuries they willingly inflicted in the alternate timeline still occur, at the same time as they did originally.

The Year of the Fall?

Also, in my world there’s a group of beings known as Darklords, and the seven most powerful each command, and are named after, one of the Seven Deadly Sins. Long story short, there used to be an eighth, and it was their death that broke the cosmic balance, causing the Darklords’ power to become The Corruption and their enemies’ (the Dynasties of Light) power to become Addictive Magic. What would be a good name for the eighth Darklord?

And since my plot involves a quest to put said Darklord back together and the Dynasties have a Tarot motif, what would be a good card suit for them to become (it doesn’t have to be a real suit, it could be made up) if they were reforged for the other side? Poker and Tarot suits are already taken.

[down] Thank you! I think Acedia would do well. It’s especially apt since losing her is what caused the Darklords to really start fighting back. I would probably give her regeneration powers, both to explain how she sort-of survived as fragments, and so those who were granted her powers could basically ignore threats to them, which feels appropriate.

[down][down] Shields, I like. I suppose some kind of Deflector Shields ability would be apt.

[up][up][up] "The Internecine Year"?

This has the advantage of having meanings that include "struggle within a group" and "great destruction", I believe.

[up] So you're looking for another Deadly Sin then, essentially?

Hum, that's tricky! While the standard set are well-established, when adding another one may run into the issue that what one person finds terrible another might not.

That said, Wikipedia notes some historical entrants: "Acedia" and "Vainglory". (Roughly speaking, "neglect" and "boastfulness", I think that it is.)

[up][up] Have you tried card suits from different countries to be considered?

They got pretty awesome ones such as swords, leafs, clubs, shields, acorns, batons, coins, cups, bells, roses...

...

And for an eight deadly sin...

As for what I can find, the eight deadly sin seems to be "The Sin against the Holy Ghost" which makes the sinner a "Son of Perdition".

It basically sums up to "The act of denying who you are and why you exist."

This is the one deadly sin that grants the sinner a one-way ticket straight to Hell. Due to it being incredibly hard to commit since very, very, very few human souls actually knows who they really are, hence why they can't deny it while shielded in the cradle of ignorance.

But for those selected few who managed to figure that out and still willfully commit this sin?

Oh, they are getting the hardest punishment of them all.

Doubleposting so this inquiry won't get lost.

Need a good name for the plane of existence normal, living humans live on and another for that which conscious, undead souls reside. I had Living Realm and the Realm of the Dead respectively, but now I consider them unremarkable generic.

The Realms/Lands Above (Living) and Below (Dead), the Material (Living) and Spirit Planes, the Solar (Living) and Lunar (Dead) Realms. It might help if the name doesn't describe them in terms of living vs dead, but by contrasting the state of the afterlife with the living world. For instance, if the dead are described as living in harmony, their old grudges forgotten, Concordia might be a good name for the afterlife.

Sorry for sandwich posting but I don't want this question to get lost.

I have an idea for a Harem Genre / Royal Harem / Fantasy story, and the royal family my protagonist is from has Dishing Out Dirt powers, and is from an Arab Fantasy Counterpart Culture. What would be a good family name?

[down] The Overlords? The Ascendants? The Revelers (as in, they revel in the destruction of the world)? Something that sounds cool, in contrast with how they squabble with each other.

Hi, just found this thread and thought I might try it out.

I have a group of nine eldritch god-things, one for each circle of hell. Some of them started out as humans before "ascending," some just have origins that have been completely buried with time, and one is straight up a fallen angel. Each has a specific power, but amped Up To Eleven in a way that basically makes them unkillable and all-powerful: for instance, one started out as a speedster like the Flash, but has devolved into a being made of pure "cosmic lightning" that seeks to find opponents to race/fight. Another has become a being of pure pain, another is a giant shapeshifting-but-generally-draconic monster that can control all matter, etcetera.

They're considerably pettier and more "human" than the average Eldritch Abominations, possibly due to the fact that no matter how monstrous and insane they are now many of them essentially started out as normal people given superpowers. They'll frequently bicker amongst themselves, acting less like horrible and glorious destroyers of universes and more like a Quirky Miniboss Squad that technically like each other but are perfectly willing to backstab each other for no reason.

I don't really know what to call them. For the past few years as I've been developing this setting I've dubbed them "the Explicits" for no other reason than that I thought it sounded cool, or at least that I could make it cool. However, now I just... don't see it. I mean, I've been using it so long I can't not think of them with that name, but I feel like I should still make the effort to see if I can scrounge up something more awe/terror-inspiring. Suggestions?
