Hi, it's me again. I need help with naming certain things things. First two things are related to superhero/thriller/action novel I wish to write. The third thing is for Trapped in Another World story.

  • First off, a nickname for characters and a name for a team in Japanese. The team consists of three characters:
    - Haruka Kobayashi, 16-year old Chuunibyou, daughter of a rich and influential politician and a Parahuman with aquakinetic abilities;
    - Yuko Hasegawa, 21-year old woman with many talents and Parahuman with pyrokinetic powers and ability to shapeshift into a fox or fox-human hybrid (making her technically a Kitsune);
    - Pavel Orzechowski, 21 year-old foreigner, former member of HEMA (Historic European Martial Arts), veteran of a brutal war and a Technopath.
Yuko and Pavel are Haruka's bodyguards. Btw, you don't need to come up with a nickname for Pavel, as I already got it, thanks to Titan Jump few months back. Small reminder: "Koshõ": (Written with the kanji for "Malfunction").
  • Secondly, I need a name for a special type of combat gas, that is designed to weaken Parahumans. My first name was "God Killer Toxin", but I think it's meh (correct me if I'm wrong). Basically, this gas causes Parahumans to lose control over their powers, or make these powers harmful to use. For example, a shapeshifter will be forever stuck in one form, someone with electrokinetic powers will be harmed by electricity or using their powers will electrocute them despite previously being immune to it. Parahuman affected by this gas will either die due to Power Incontinence or be crippled in one way or another.
  • Lastly, this time for Trapped in Another World story. A name for a spy network founded by a mage called by all as "Raven King" and a name for an inn, that secretly served as their headquarters. So far, I only got a name for the inn - "3 Jackdaws Inn".
I'm open for suggestions.

For the second, perhaps "Power Bane"? And for the third, perhaps "The Raven's Eyes".

[up][up] I'll give it a shot again...

1. (English or Japanese nicknames? If the former, here are some...)

1a. "Liquid Assets" (Since she's with no doubt, rich and since her powers involves the "wealth of water" existent in all living things, she can make transfers and loans of it just like with her money if put in a pinch.)

1b. "Foxfire" (A luminous mushroom growing on rotten wood and glows in the dark), which might hint that the fumes produced by her (green) flames, when inhaled, can help bleeding wounds coagulate faster, effectively making her part-healer for the time on the field for emergency makeshift treatments, by having them inhale some of the fumes her fire produce to keep them from bleeding out on the spot. It doesn't fix them up though, and they, depending on the injury, might need to see a medic afterwards...

2. "Safety Off" = Obvious yes puzzling, as the gas literally turns "the safety off" on the parahumans yet is obscure enough that when called out on in the battle, the enemy can still confuse it for anything else, such as "guns now shooting live ammo", "primed hand-grenade", or code for "maximum damage allowed!". Leaving them wondering what the weird gas is that hits them whenever these two words are uttered in the battle.

Not many would instantly draw the connection that it would be the name of the actual gas. Leaving it a mystery to the enemy to try and figure out, in their search for anything that can negate the effects, since the so called obscured "name" for the gas "never gets mentioned" anywhere they might look.

3. "Starry Sky" = You think those are stars twinkling in the night? Nope, those are the eyes of the Raven King's spies. And due to the nature of the information gathering, might be completely out in the open, yet not drawing attention to be notable, like of the stars at night might appear or not without a second thought until those watching them starts "connecting the dots" to make "constellations" and patterns out of them. Symbolism potential at its finest.

How are these?

[up][up] "Power Bane" and "The Raven's Eyes" are interesting suggestions. The Raven's Eyes especially.
[up]For #1, I was hoping for Japanese nicknames. I don't like "Liquid Assets", but "Foxfire" caught my attention. That description suggested an interesting application for her pyrokinetic powers. For Haruka, I was hoping for a nickname a Chuuni could come up with. (Before you ask, she is a Chuuni as a coping mechanism after her mother's death and she's type 2 and 3 Chuuni.)
For #2, I'm not all that convinced.
As for #3, it could serve as a name to another inn/base of operations. Raven King was a master of Wind, Dark and (Lore of) Beast magic, and many of his spies were adept in one or two of these elements. Not many members have affinity towards Celestial or Light magic.

[up] Thanks for clarification.

Updating:

1.

1a. "KĂ´rigashi"(Loan Shark), a combination of being intimidating in image, possessing a ton of money and willing to lend it out for a price, and with her aquakinetic powers to practically swim through the air by turning the molecules in the air into water as a way to transport herself quickly, with the added bonus of "freezing the assets" to her disposal by turning the liquid form of water into a solid state (ice), she can use it as a offense, defense, and mobile asset by using the very air around her as assets. What kind of shark-theme she would go with is up to her, depending on what kind of shark that she likes the most at the time.

2. "Hysterigal": Heard of "hysterical strength"? It's basically, in fight-or-flight situations, when the body shuts off all safety limiters in order to go maximum 100% output in order to escape a lethal situation. However, the same goes with superpowers, and with the safety limits off, they can go at 100% but at the expense of permanent physical damage on the body using them, if left exposed to the gas for too long. It's a double-edged sword, really, working for for both enemy and ally alike.

The "-gal" part is due to a ingredient in said gas, turns out to be from the mysterious identity of the "source" behind the manufactured product that is the gas. A dark and horrifying mystery, down the road...

3. "Odin's Ravens": pretty obvious. "Hugin and Mumin"/ "Memory and Thought" basically, in myth, flying around the world every day, starting at sunrise and return at sundown to their master in order to share all the secrets and sights they have witnessed while flying around the world. They repeat this cycle every single day and resulting in their master managing to keep their reputation as "omniscient" and all knowing to others.

In your case, those "ravens" can easily measure up in numbers way above mere "two".

[up]"Loan Shark" would fit if she was type 1 Chuuni - pretending to be a delinquent (can't decide if I should go that route). As I stated, she is between type 2 [Subcultural] and 3 [Evil Eye]. She is obsessed with European culture and Pavel was assigned to her specifically to satiate her curiosity (as he traveled a lot and, out of all foreigners affiliated with Haruka's family, he knows Europe's history and knows how tell in interesting manner) and, at the same time, try to curb her obsession. Being type 3, she tried to give herself an awesome nickname and uses Gratuitous English when trying to act like a heroine from action-packed manga. She also has habit of giving others nicknames. Pavel is not sure how to react to his: Koshõ-san. Yuko, on the other hand, is both amused and grateful. Btw, how is "Foxfire" in Japanese?

As for the gas, I think I should present different examples. Mateusz Nowański (call him Matt or Matthew), Pavel's comrade from the same company, has ability to open up portals. After being exposed to the gas, using his powers put such a strain on his body, that without a special medicine, he can either kill himself after using his powers for less than hour, or shorten his lifespan. Matt's girlfriend Nicole (also, from the same unit), can transform into a tiger, human-tiger hybrid (basically a Catgirl) or Were-Tiger forms. After the exposure to the gas, she can only use her hybrid form, as in Tiger and Were-Tiger forms, she looses control of herself and turns into a savage beast that attacks friend or foe, with a risk of staying in that form forever without special medicine. The same medicine used by Matt can allow her to temporarily access those other forms safely.

As for "Odin's Ravens", I think it would've fit if the Raven King called himself Odin, or there was Odin in Another World's mythos. The Raven King's name was Dijkstra, and he was a summoned hero of the 1st Generation. Before you ask, Protagonists are of 3rd Generation. They were summoned 40 years after Dijkstra's arrival (2 Earth years, as time flows differently between the worlds).

Eh, I think that eponymous disease names are going out of fashion now, so a recently discovered condition wouldn't bear such a name.
I believe "would be unlikely to" would be a more accurate choice of words. It's not like there's a zero chance of medical scientists discovering a new disease/disorder/condition to which a name that describes it with sufficient accuracy would be long enough to be unwieldy due to the symptoms being too varied to be lumped together under a single descriptor and the underlying cause persistently eluding clear identification.

Hell, I'd like to see you try to give distinct descriptive names to the various viruses from Resident Evil; the only thing most of these viruses have in common is that they turn most victims into Technically Living Zombies, and that's usually a sign of failure (the typical true goal of a given virus is to create superhuman living weapons such as the Tyrants, which requires stringently specific conditions to achieve), so it would be disingenuous to call them any variation of "zombie virus" unless it's intended to show that the users are outsiders who aren't privy to the true nature of what they're dealing with.

[up][up] And who says that "loan shark" can only be interpreted as a "delinquent" term only?

If a life is saved from certain death by a hero, wouldn't that be considered a "life loan" to the one saved? One the hero never will come around to collect out of the goodness of their choices?

This is an opportunity to give a word a new definition, after all.

And if she's the one giving them nicknames, wouldn't she go for the gratious english and let some of them be english as well, just maybe mispronounced?

(Foxfire being one of them...which she got right, that is. Or she flubs it and calls her "Foxfile" instead.)

2. Oh, in that case: "Amnesia"

Why?

Because the ones affected by it simply..."forget" how to do certain things with their powers and need the medicines to artificially induce such effects until they maybe eventually do recall how to do it naturally.

3. Difficult then...

"Sands of the Desert?" (As in, there's as many sources and spies as there is grains of sands in the desert, they're everywhere, no escaping them, and once you step inside, you sink deeper into it with every step...)

[up]Gratuitous English does not apply to nicknames. It does, however, in Calling Your Attacks or when talking to others. And, don't forget that "Loan Shark" has negative connotation and, at least in the west, loan sharks became a feature of criminal underworld. And, I wasn't planning for her to give loans. If anything, she would try to bribe others with gifts, parties or just money, but not give loans (That's the reason some people put up with her antics. Others do, because they know what she really is behind the mask). Maybe her eldest brother would, but out of pragmatic reasons to obtain vital alliances to keep his father in power, keep family safe and to use it purely for Japan's benefit.
I would be willing to stay with "shark" part, as I consider these animals amazing.

Regarding the gas. I wanted the name to be intimidating. The very mention of this gas would unnerve Parahumans, or on other cases, throw them into state of panic, scrambling for gas masks."Power Bane" was a good example.
My idea for "God Killer" came to me once I thought of a scenario, where good guys would use it. Basically, an evil Parahuman with abilities that made them virtually unkillable. They had to use a sample of that gas to shut down their powers to be able to kill them.

You know what? I think I'll stay with "Raven's Eyes" for the spy network. Instead, I want to ask for a name for a set of 12 magical weapons handed to the dukes of Kingdom of Firana. Basically Runefangs from Warhammer Fantasy. Powerful weapons infused with magical element, that also served as a badge of ducal office. Each is a different weapon.

[up] In that case, perhaps it would be easier to think of a name not from an a adult's standpoint, but a girl younger than her actual age would imagine it to be. (aka, not knowing if a name is cringe worthy or reasonable when said out loud as, let's face it, anything sounds good in one's head due to the sole reason of "I came up with it!". That is a face we all have had...)

(...)

Got one.

"Samonna" (Combination of the japanese words "Same"= "Shark" and "Onna" = "Woman",)

In pure english, it would roughly translate as "Shaoman" (roughly, that is.)

How about this one then?

2. In that case, I got another that might fit your taste...

"Gray Death"

I don't know which part of the brain is in charge for the safety restraints on the super-powers, but most of it is gray matter, so something that kills the safe restraints would basically be a reaper of said gray tissue and once neurons in the lobes dies, they are lost forever, a actual death.

Extra bonus if the gas is actually gray (like concrete dust) as well.

3. Oh, okay then.

For the weapons:

"Zodiacs"

"The Perfect Rules" (as the number twelve is the "symbol of rule and perfection")

"Gears of God"

"Contrasts of Cosmos"

"Conduits of Cosmos"

"Colors of Cosmos"

I got plenty more if needed but stops for now...

Opinions?

For the weapons: Perhaps the "Elements of Power"—alluding to both their potency and their status as symbols of rulership.

[up]"Samonna" might work. I was thinking to make her a bit tomboyish, and sharks are not gentle creatures. But, to ham it up further, maybe "The Great Shark-Woman, Queen of the Seas!" or something.
While on a grocery run, I was thinking of nicknames a chuuni would came up with for Pavel and Yuko. For Pavel, something along the lines of "One-Eyed Iron General" (1. He's missing and eye; 2. He can command robots and drones). As for Yuko, maybe "Fox Fire Empress" or something. I will keep "Foxfire" and "Koshõ" as their code names though. I wonder how would it translate in Japanese.

"Grey Death" might also work, because the gas is colored gray and it would make sense if soldiers who were affected or witnessed the effects of the gas gave the report.

Regarding the weapons, once again, I forgot to put major detail. There are 12 major gods, from whom 12 magic elements were born. Fire, Water, Earth, Wind, Life, Death, Metal, Beast, Light, Dark, Celestial and Arcane.
"Gears of God" or "Elements of Power" were surprisingly accurate, as each weapon is infused with one element. Unlike Runefangs, only one of them is a sword. But, um, I can't decide what weapons and element should they possess. I don't think I can give a bow Beast element, as Amber Bow from Warhammer Fantasy exist. Unless I could make it an expy of it.

That doesn't sound overly similar in and of itself, to me—especially if the effects of the bow's power are different from those from the Warhammer bow.

I'm trying to think of a good name for an Anthropomorphic Personification of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant's infamous Reactor No.4. Thinking of Svitlana (Ukrainian form of Russian name Svetlana, since the reactor in question is/was operating in Ukraine), since it derives from a Slavic word meaning "light", "shining", "luminescent", "pure", "blessed", or "holy", fitting with the entity's nature as a living embodiment of nuclear fission that was originally one of the most benevolent creatures you could ever find on the planet, only to tragically become a monstrous antithesis of her name when an attempt to test the limits of her abilities goes horribly wrong/right due to a mix of incompetence and malice.

I have one question, though: What are common diminutive/hypocoristic forms of "Svitlana"? Googling doesn't seem to give clearly reliable answers; one source (found via this Behind the Name discussion) claims "Lana", "Lanonka", "Lanochka", "Lanusya", "Svitlanka", "Svitlanochka", "Svyeta" and "Svyetka", but the site is of Russian origin, so it's of rather dubious reliability IMO.

[up][up]Hello from Ukraine smile

How about name "Rada" ? On one hand, it's a derivative from "radist'", which means "joy" in Ukrainian and also doubles as adjective "joyful" in feminine. On the other hand, it can form a pun with 'radiation' grin

[up] Isn't that a Slavic word for "parliament" or "assembly"? Also, I can't seem to find any evidence of it being a given name on the Internet; is it rare, or something? Nevermind, I ended up finding it via the Ukrainian Wikipedia here as a byproduct of deciding to check the article for Svitlana (which unfortunately doesn't mention any diminutive forms).

And the more I consider it, the more I find myself gravitating towards it. But Svitlana though... maybe instead of one character, I'll make it a pair of twins.

[up][up] Because I prefer a name that can't be easily confused for being of a non-Slavic language; "Ana" in this case could be easily mistaken for a variation/misspelling of "Anna", a Latinized Greek name of Hebrew origin that is common to practically every European language.

I'm looking for a term that means "a person who was created in a laboratory," but also implies that other people created under similar circumstances are like distant cousins. For example, Frankenstein's monster would be [X], thus he feels a sense of kinship with Superboy, another [X] who was also made in a lab. I suspect that this term may already exist in some fiction somewhere, but I have never come across it myself.

I'm writing a cyberpunk short story about an Asian street girl who lives in the dark underbelly of a nameless, grimy far-future Asian city, embroiled in the affairs of gangsters and the criminal underworld.

The bosses in the criminal underworld are named after death & underworld deities of several Asian religions and mythologies. They are called that to instill terror and respect on the impoverished populace of the city, and to protect their identities.

I'm open on suggestions for names.

TitanJump Since: Sep, 2013 Relationship Status: Singularity

[up] This feels like it has been done before...and over and over.

If you feel a bit daring and a bit creative, why not name those bosses after diseases instead?

With the power-hierarchy between them being determined by the mortality rates of said diseases they're named after.

(For example: the incurable ones being the deadliest and most powerful, and those with low amounts of deaths and treatable less so.)

Just a suggestion, since the moniker of underworld entities has, through history, been used far too many times in the lack of more options...

Hi. I have another thing related for superhero/thriller/action novel. This time, it's less of asking for a name, but asking if these names are any good.

As I have established, there are people called Parahumans, who possess super powers. I had this idea to divide this people into categories, or classes for better identification. Here are the names:

  • Theriantrope (animal shapeshifters and human-animal hybrid, ranging from Little Bit Beastly to Werebeasts. All these Parahumans have one thing in common - Healing Factor)
  • Elementalists (basically Elemental Powers)
  • Psychics (all tropes of Psychic Powers and Technopath)
  • Metas (physical mutations and/or enhancements)
  • Esoteric (any power that does not fit to any aforementioned category, for example Time Manipulation, Portal Creation or Power Copying.

I'm not sure if I should add additional category. And, of all these names, Metas bother me the most.

I will become a great writer one day! Hopefully...
