The same as honorius just pointed out. The Isthmus of Panama.

Ah,I see. I'm afraid that geography is not my strong suit.

Hmm, looks like three votes for IS Mo S. I guess that's the one I'll go with then, especially since the title it's an acronym of is a pretty good description of what the AI in question does. Thanks for the help.

Which sounds better, "Veneficology" or "Magicology"?

It depends what you are applying the term too. I imagine the former being more of a controlled art than the latter, which sound slightly more brutish.

It's the study of magic. Magic in this story occurs in nature, but after a good deal of training, you can channel and control it.

A less clumsy sounding term would be mageology.

Magicology sounds fine to me.

Veneficology is a lot more exotic/mysterious though.

Personally, while I don't care for the Canis Latinicus that is Veneficology, it sounds much, much better than Magicology, which is, IMO, utterly laughable as a serious term.

About the AI acronym: M.I.S.R.I (Misery).

I think it sounds quite unprofessional when an acronym spells out a word.

It happens. Usually with a cool word though. Like PHASR.

I don't know why anyone would want to name their thing after something that's obviously bad.

@Leradny: That is an opinion I happen to share, plus I've got something against Backronyms in general, mainly because they seem both cheesy and lazy. I also wanted an acronym that gave the impression if being used because the full name was too long, rather then any desire to give the AI a name in the I Call It "Vera" sense. That said, it turns out that IS Mo S is actually a word (I googled it) but since it's fairly obscure it probably doesn't matter.

[up]Personally, I also agree - "bacronyms" like that are one step below the Meaningful Name in the "list of things that tick me off in fiction". Never use them outside of comedy.

@Naoq that sounds pretty good. What's the etymology? *looks up* Miracles, eh? Not sure if that would apply, since they're figuring out how it is natural...

Well, the more direct derivation is from "thaumaturgy". (In my work, a thaumatologist is a researcher studying how the laws of physics in other universes differ from the ones we're familiar with.)

I've got some militaristic groups in far-future Europe that need names; I would like to come up with some names that won't make native speakers ROFL.

  • Polish group in Krakow, identified by green sashes.

  • Large group centered in the Czech Republic. I think they got started after taking over CZUB.

  • Nomadic motorcycle group, somewhere in that same area.

  • Hungarian group living in Serbia.

Have one of them be named after a date. Like the Fidel Castro guerilla group was called "Movimiento 26 de Julio" (movement of the 26th of july). Pick a date that is symbolic for your group and translate it in polish.

Brigade in a name works pretty good as well.

Or look here for inspiration http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polish_partisans http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Czech_resistance_to_Nazi_occupation

[up][up][up]Gaia, or Demeter, if you want something really obvious. And there are many other figures in Greek mythology who have to do with trees, plants, woods, etc, like Daphne.
