I wonder how many of us do have Kraid backstory headcanons.

I personally think of him as a native of Zebes who sold out to the Pirates.

I'll teach you a lesson about just how cruel the world can be. That's my job, as an adult.

If the Space Pirates are one race, why on Earth are they going around calling themselves "Space Pirates"? Who names their species on their outlaw profession?

On Kraid, the hand-drawn manual that was kickstarted (and then scrapped because Nintendo did a cease and desist) had Kraid as a Mafia boss that was working with the pirates — don't ask me where they got that bit of lore, though.

Space Pirate might be the only "true" name they had by the time of the games.

All There in the Manual materials state that the Space Pirates had a habit of cultural appropriation taken to extremes. Whenever they conquered a world, they'd claim that world as their "homeworld" and even take the name of the race they slaughtered to take it, before ditching it and moving on to another one.

Sounds retconned in to explain calling the "main" space pirate race "Zebesians".

I don't think they ever call themselves space pirates. And while it is true they do perform acts of piracy in space, they are aiming to conquer the galaxy. The Federation called them pace pirates, and the name continued to stick even after they realized that they were actually more organized than regular pirates. Also, the way the manuals and stuff talk, it's like they're the only people in the galaxy that commit acts of piracy, but here have to be other pirate groups, they just aren't plot relevant.

They called themselves Space Pirates in the Prime series. They don't in the mainline games — but then again they don't speak in the mainline games, period. If they have an actual species name, I've never heard it.

My understanding:

The primary species of the "Space Pirates" are Zebesians. Zebes isn't actually the planet their species is native to, it's a planet they conquered that became their home in a sense. The analogy given is that it's a bit like how White Settlers aren't native to America but think of themselves as American regardless.

The Space Pirates evidently allow non-Zebesian members regardless and might be a multi-species civilization.

Overall, the name "Space Pirates" seems to be an Artifact Title. They seem to be more of an empire than a crime ring.

Yeah Nintendo wasn't thinking too hard in the early days and we wound up with a Non-Indicative Name for the primary villains on account of Retro crying "THE SACRED TEXTS!"

They could probably use a more "Proper" name by now even if the generic "Space Pirates" term can be explained away by intergalactic linguistics.

Pretty sure their headquarters used to be the Pirate Homeworld we see in Corruption known in Japan as Urtraghus. Eventually they took Zebes and that became their new HQ, but the old one was still in use, at least until Corruption.

Oh, apparently an artbook mentions there were other "homeworlds," so it looks like we get pirates from all over.

Well, it's taken a while but here's chapter 10 of Gamerthumbtv's metroid retrospective / timeline. That's right. We're finally getting Other M.

Gotta give it to Thumb. He stayed focused and was even handed, even having a few good things to say about the game. Considering how controversial Other M is, that's impressive.

Just started Metroid Dread and landed into a very annoying roadblock. Basically I don't have the ability to press down on my joycon. I'm trying to pull it up so it can be pushed down but that doesn't seem to be doing the trick.

Joycon broken, or suffering from joycon drift?

If you haven't sone so yet, you can try the configuration utility in the console settings. If you've already used it, I guess it's time for warranty...

[up][up] Yeah, all I can do is echo Medinoc: fiddle around with the settings and hope the thing isn't broken.

We're getting some Metroid today. I can feel it. I know I also had that feeling in September, and it meant nothing, but I'm really feeling it this time.

Thumb has obviously been an Other M apologist ever since his telling of Metroid 2's story included Samus going through lava caves and then deciding to turn on her Varia Suit module that she always had. tongue (He really hates Bag of Spilling)

Surprised he didn't include anything along the lines of "Adam's integrity made him many powerful enemies within the GF, who had begun actively sabotaging his missions. Over time he'd been ground down and become jaded and paranoid. The moment he started investigating the Bottle Ship, Samus showed up out of nowhere acting strangely, and he feared she'd been compromised.". Or a Flash Back to that panel near the end of the manga where Adam worries that Samus will burn out if she tries to live always as a warrior and never as a woman.

Was wondering if he'd include Metroid: Samus and Joey after this, but looks like the next video jumps ahead to Fusion. Aww. S&J can kind of read as Samus working through her lingering "THE BABY THE BABY" issues by becoming a parental figure to someone.

They did mention other control styles besides double stick and the original, and I think the Switch might be able to replicate pointer.

It honestly isn't that big a change from the Gamecube. Not putting down the remaster, more saying how good the original looked.

I really want a wallpaper of the menu. Not with the title or anything on screen, just the background showing off the inside of a metroid nucleus in HD.
