Nope, Other M was set after Super Metroid, but with some tweaking (aka removing the Deleter subplot and the Baby Metroid thing, which caused the most consternation in the fanbase) it probably would've fit better as a prequel to Zero Mission.

I like to imagine Samus completely raised the bar for what a hunter was. She was considered the best because she hunted down a bunch of dangerous criminals in short order, but the fact she was a legitimate One-Woman Army wasnt even considered a possibility. Zero Mission was her going from tough soldier to living legend.
Right. I forgot the continual babbling about "The baby".
Samus was feeling sad because Ze Baby and because surrogate father figure haha what are chozo?? Adam was being emotionally distant
A Metroid game before the first Metroid game would likely involve no Metroids and simply show just mercenary jobs at best. And really, there are far more interesting stories to explore like rogue Chozo factions or Phantoon.
I always wanted an evil Chozo who sided with the Space Pirates.
And pilots a Mini-Mecha version of the Power Suit for battling Samus. Like Iron Man vs. Iron Monger.
I think the 100% completion bonus in Samus Returns is hinting at a bunch of evil Chozo. I'm not sure though, it's kind of ambiguous.

It's something, at least. But yeah, it's good possible setup.
If we wanted to show a pre-Zero Mission Samus, we could have a game that calls back to one of her early missions, like the one that recommended her to be called for Zebes, but the bulk of it takes place later on.
You could make a Metroid prequel not featuring Samus and focus on the metroids, or have a story about Samus in the army. You don't really need metroids in the game, metroids are barely in a lot of the games anyways (as in they aren't fought a lot, not that they aren't important to those plots). They're just an Elite Mook at the end.

But Samus is the Metroid. It is her.
In a prequel though?
Being the ultimate hunter is why she was sent to Zebes, after all.

Metroid reclaiming the Artifact Title through alien transliteration is honestly one of the most clever things the franchise has done.
don't you guys make me find the bird dad rant!
Replayed super metroid, Now I remember Why i wasn't too sad about losing the grapple beam
Ya know no one ever brings up how much of a bad boss Mother Brain is in Super
I mean as you treck through Tourian and are about to face the Big One.... you only find the bodies of the most current victim who distetigrate to sand/dust in rooms that are FILLED with 'sand' and the ring defenses have been turned off
the implication is Mother Brain locked her Room down and let Ze Baby loose in the areas before it hoping it would kill Sammy 'which too be fair if any of her elite 4 couldn't do it'

Have we ever gotten a motivation for Mother Brain? I mean, I'll take motivation for any member of the Space Pirates, but I'd kind of like to know why Mother Brain turned on the Chozo. I don't think any game covers why, except for possibly Other M, and I can't recall if she explains why she's evil in that. I think Melissa Bergman was just upset at humans for treating her like a piece of property, but never touched upon why the original Mother Brain turned evil.
The manga touched on her motivations somewhat.
Sounds like one hell of an superiority inferiority complex.
Hmmm, another trope to add to her character page.
