the media doesnt care about affairs like jfk's playa status before watergate
after All the Presidents Men came out
investigate reporters decide to peek in affairs

to become a president

This level of trolling is reasonable for Commander Obvious. What do you think of this, everyone?Watergate was big, aye. Nixon did cover the withdrawal from Vietnam, which is high-octane flame bait for discussion (though personally I think that by that time the North Vietnamese had gotten too entrenched, and the antiwar movement picked up too much momentum, for Nixon to have done anything else.)
Still, don't forget, Nixon did a hell of a lot in foreign policy, especially his visit to China. In Cold War terms that was an unquestioned diplomatic feat, and a huge victory for him. Balance that against Watergate.
@TH: Nixon was staunchly Republican, hence anti-Communist. If a Democrat had been in office, any attempts to make peace with China would have been dismissed as catering to the Dirty Commies. For an anti-Communist to make the visit meant that he could pull it off without anyone questioning his credentials.
The Split might have been well underway, but Nixon's visit to China confirmed it. It also cemented China's place in the international community, which it was angling so desperately to get. Japan has nothing to do with the calculus—at the time it was very much its own country, an economic rival to the US, and badly hated by the Chinese, who had not forgiven them for WWII atrocities.

Charlie Stross's cheerful, optimistic predictions for 2017, part one of three.nixon went ping ponging with mao
though i can argue
the sino-soviet split has already happened
and they were looking for allies
even if nixon wasnt the president
i think china will still look for america for help
after all the united states has japan at that time
and if my geography is right
japan is very close to china
either china apologizes to ussr or join usa and be awesome
they did the latter cuz asians are silly
i still think nixon shouldnt have continued the vietnam war when the north vietnamese
wanted to do peace
instead nixon continued
i wouldnt be this anti-nixon if he did not do that

This level of trolling is reasonable for Commander Obvious. What do you think of this, everyone?Well, Nixon was anti communist who went to China in 1972 after the Sino-Soviet spilt.
