Well there is Star Blazers in the space opera genre.
Maison Ikkoku in the romantic comedy genre.
And Touch in the sports romance genre.
Fullmetal Alchemist might be interesting to review.
Haruhi Suzumiya has been a big impact on anime, although it's hard to define how.
Space Battleship Yamato, definitely. Maison Ikkoku...I'd say Urusei Yatsura was more influential. One thing that's important is to distinguish between manga and anime — some series were only influential in anime because they influenced other manga which in turn were adapted into anime. If we're including those, The Rose Of Versailles should probably be included. From some of Frederik L. Schodt's writings, I'm willing to say that Akira's art style had a strong influence on sci-fi manga as well. And if we're going to go outside anime altogether, Shin Takarajima/New Treasure Island got the whole story-manga ball rolling.
Outside the field of manga adaptations, Science Ninja Team Gatchaman and Pokemon were quite influential, and the popularity of visual novel adaptations can probably be traced back to To Heart. And do you think you could take a shot at clarifying the Haruhi Suzumiya point?

Agree with Nom...Shinji didn't stand a chance. Which is why I don't like bashing him as a character. Now, bashing the writing of him, that's perfectly fine. But as written, again, he didn't stand a chance.
@Raw, to me TTGL in itself is that rollercoster that you described. It really starts REALLY low, then it goes up, then back down, then up, then WAY down, then up a bit then down, then up and up and you THINK it hits a top plateau, but no. It goes up a bit, then back down, then up, then down, then up..then UP..then OMG UP...
Then it breaks through the ceiling of the universe.
@OP FLCL is cool too. Watch it after End. Then TTGL (Although to be honest if you're short on time the movies are fine. The second is just so much epic candy...) Then the Rebuild movies.
To be honest, I'm not sure who or why I'd recommend PSG to. I know that I love it, I'm not sure why. I think the first episode gave me the TTGL vibe so I had to see what would happen next. I'm not sure if the series ever lived up to that. But it lived up to something.
Democracy is the process in which we determine the government that we deservePSG is worth it for the experience. As in, you are guarranteed to finish every little half-episode with "WHAT THE FUCK DID I JUST WATCH?"
'''YOU SEE THIS DOG I'M PETTING? THAT WAS COURAGE WOLF.Cute, isn't he?@ Shay Guy,
Urusei Yatsura came first and has the bigger fanbase because it is targeted at teens. It had a big impact on Unwanted Harem and Magical Girlfriend forms of romantic comedy.
Maison Ikkoku was targeted at adults and has had by far the greater impact on what we might call the "traditional" romantic comedy. Also, Maison Ikkoku managed to spill outside the anime niche and appeal to non-anime fans.
Touch has a huge fanbase. Thanks mainly to it's crossover appeal to girls, which means many of today's Japanese mother's grew up reading Touch, and tend to identify it as the kind of manga they want their children to read.
Haruhi Suzumiya is hard to pin down because it's such a Genre-Busting anime. But it did lampshade and mock the "moe" character with Mikuru Asahina. Ironically this seems to have been the spark that set off the current "moe craze" which has changed moe from a feeling to also being a certain style of drawing and characterization.
The sudden popularity of Light Novel adaptations as a source for anime really got started with Haruhi. That may be it's most notable contribution.
I think the explosion of concert scenes in recent anime might be drawn from Haruhi too.
And of course Haruhi is notable for having a large and devoted fanbase, despite some atrocious trolling on the part of the creators. Reverse Psychology Marketing indeed.
When I found out Endless Eight sold more than Gurren Lagann...
I mean, in Lagann Gainax gave the public everything they ever wanted and more, stuff they didn't even know they wanted, it wasn't rape, it was surprise sex we didn't know we wanted and it was glorious, even the sad bits. So... that Endless Eight sold more... people say it's because Lagann is only for giant mecha fans, but I've never been one of those. In fact, it has quite the Multiple Demographic Appeal, actually resurrected the genre...
'''YOU SEE THIS DOG I'M PETTING? THAT WAS COURAGE WOLF.Cute, isn't he?
But Haruhi DV Ds are ridiculously overpriced!
Haven't read this whole thread, but I've also just gotten to episode 10 of Evangelion and felt like chiming in.
Despite what people have said, I think there's plenty of of mindfuck/weirdness/horrible things in the early episodes, they just aren't in the foreground. They're lurking around in subtext and subplots. Take the OP for an example - it seems all shiny and happy and fun, but if you look at some of what it actually shows...
Basically, I can see the traumatic/Mind Screw Chekhov's Gun on the wall but it hasn't been fired yet.
The Asuka episodes so far have been a bit lighter, though.
(All this said, I'm also the person who when watching Code Geass preducted Lelouch's Geass going horribly wrong from the second episode and then spent 20 episodes waiting for the payoff. I'm either really good at picking up foreshadowing, or I just default to assuming everything is going get horrible and traumatic in stories. I obviously watched too much Joss Whedon as a kid.)

Say what. Crazy fans are going to buy regardless of the price. At least I never pay too much attention in the prince of things I really like. I am more surprised buy how many people even want it contents. It last episode is awesome and a couple in the between are very well done. But the rest is mostly crap. Knowing it sold well is kinda sad, as it shows people are not terrible concerned with quality. I am at last relieved by the awesomeness of The Movie.
But I guess we sidetracked a little?
@Drakyndra: There's no such thing as too much Joss Whedon.
It's not exactly naive. And it can happen. But it's tough. And definetly worthwhile.I'd like to know what you mean by that — I presume you don't mean shonen manga? Because by all accounts I've heard, Urusei Yatsura was the shonen rom-com.
I'd like to challenge that. The trend had been identified
as early as 2001.
Some statistics might be helpful. For instance, of the anime that started in 2003/2004/2005, how many were adapted from light novels versus 2007/2008/2009? Shakugan No Shana and Bludgeoning Angel Dokuro-chan were made in 2005, Scrapped Princess in 2003, Full Metal Panic in 2002, Slayers in 1995; light novel adaptations were hardly unprecedented. (Of course, you weren't claiming they were, only that they became more popular afterward, but I'd still like to see some figures.)
If there's been such an explosion, yeah, "Live Alive" would probably be the cause.
[citation needed]
Because in the Japanese market, when your target audience is the otaku crowd, the demand for your good is inelastic.
...And I think I just restated the statement quoted. :P
You should pity non native speakers. I have to Google to know what 'inelastic' means (and had to think to notice it is also 'non-elastic').
Just to be sure, you are agreeing with me, right?
Episode 24: Knocking on Heaven’s Doors (Gee, I wonder what’s that mean)
Ok, Let’s make one thing clear. The last episode seriously made me doubt that I would continue reviewing this show. I’ve liked it this far. But that episode was a serious misstep. Boring, dragging, teasing. It had lots of problems.
After some brooding and reflection, I realized that I made a promise to myself. The whole purpose of this (as I have stated earlier) was to see what was so good about Evangelion (I’ll give a shout out to Ronnie here, mostly to say that I understand how you feel about Watchmen now…well kinda, I don’t loathe Evangelion
) And, if I backed down because of one episode I would A) feel like a jackass for days and B) would be on awesomeness withdrawal.
So, I’m back. But not with an “Oh, let’s watch this” mentality, but more of a “You need to convince me now” and you know what? Anno won. If this were a video I would’ve clapped for 45 minutes and leave it at that.
But first, there are a couple of points here. The episode did have a narmy scene. And as I already said I could not take the Ho Yay seriously (I know it makes sense and it’s completely reasonable. Doesn’t make it any less weird)
I remember that I’ve seen pictures of Kaworu a lot in reference to NGE and I thought he would be a major player…but turns out he isn’t. He’s just a very particular Monster of the Week.
Ok, let’s take the narmy scene out of the way (because it’s actually the first scene) So, we see Asuka running a reminiscing in a dream about how happy she was that she was a pilot, etc. And then sees her mother dead. Devastating I admit…but then we had to see little Asuka’s face and my god was it the textbook example of Herp derp derp.
I’d really like to write a review. And I feel like I have to…but, I can’t. I just cannot think of anything. Everything I’ve got is nothing but praise, and I don’t want to do a wall of text that is just praise.
NEWS: I will review the finale this weekend...probably.
It's not exactly naive. And it can happen. But it's tough. And definetly worthwhile.Kaworu is a very successful Ensemble Dark Horse. One who watch any adaptation, parody or reference would never guess he has such a small role originally (even the manga expanded his role). It should be noted, however, that he does appear in the opening. It is very quick and you may not even notice, but he is there.

Gushing About Shows You Like is allowed. If not downright encouraged.
Well, yes. But I don't like it that much, so...
I mean, I just cannot bring any commentary that wouldn't be of the kind of: "Wow, that angle is cool" or "that scene is beautiful". And well, I don't think you've come here for me to restablish your love for NGE.

Anyway, don't get me wrong. I could write such a review. But I wouldn't feel good doing it. I want this reviews to enhance NGE. Like the one where I analyzed Asuka.
