Leviathan and its sequel Behemoth by Scott Westerfeld:
The artwork makes me think that it would look beautiful animated, especially regarding the bio/technology. In my imangination it's the sort of thing that would have been perfect for Studio Gonzo (after having seen Gankutsuou), if they hadn't gone under.
The next sequel, Goliath, sounds like it will involve Japan, so hey, maybe that could be an impetus.
...what do you mean, "English" adaptations of anime? If you're talking about turning anime into books, kindly refer to Light Novels.
The equivalent of turning English books into anime would be to take English cartoons and turn them into Japanese novels? Is anyone particularly against that?

Actually the equivalent would be to take a Japanese book and make an English cartoon or comic out of it. Not entirely sure if that's ever happened, unless you count folklore.
As for books to manga, because manga is tends to be highly arc centric and/or very novel-like in plot execution, I'm willing to best most books would work.
Books to anime would be making an animated adaptation of a book. As always, that would work if you get someone good to do it. End of story.
I've always thought One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest would work well as a manga or anime, if only because so much of it relies on really trippy visuals to get the POV across.
Film tech's finally gotten to the point where a live-action version could visually convey this perspective, but the existing movie is so highly-regarded (even if it diverges significantly from the book) that a remake would be unlikely to begin with, and even if they tried it would just end up being highly derivative of the 1975 film to appease audiences. An anime adaptation would be less likely to have these constraints.
My only concern would be an emphasis on Ratched's Gag Boobs...
Neal Cassady died for your sins! The Axis Of Time series, but they'd probably gut it because it shows the Imperial Japanese forces as a bunch of complete monsters.
Into The Looking Glass, definitely.
Half-Life: Dual Nature, a crossover story of reasonably sized proportions. They've done Agatha Christie's books and made an anime out of it, Poirot and Marple, so how about James Patterson? He's got contemporary popularity, and Alex Cross is a popular character (though I don't think his books have been made into movies or a TV show at any time - correct me if I'm wrong).
But you know what could really be fun? Don Quixote. Especially if they make it a comedy. Yeah, I know it already was a comedy, but they could emphasize the humor more or make the humor more contemporary.

Yes please. : 3
Hmm... -browses Literature genre page- I would say And Then There Were None, but that's sort of already covered.
- White Fang in the style of Wolfs Rain would be pretty epic.
- Abarat is already mind screwy enough to be an anime.
- Artemis Fowl has the witty banter, unique characters, and genius Villain Protagonist (at least in the first book) down. Artemis voiced by Jun Fukuyama? Or maybe Hiro Shimono would work, he's doing a pretty good job with Keima.
- Neverending Story has the flowy white dragon and flying sequences. I would want Miyazaki to do it, but he's proven not to be too faithful to the original novels.
Rosencrantz And Guildenstern Are Dead might make a good Gag Series.
I actually started a thread on this topic myself awhile back :3
Anyway, Crime And Punishment and The Brothers Karamazov would make excellent anime. As would The Man Who Was Thursday by GK Chesterton.
I'll turn your neocortex into a flowerpot!...THIS IS BRILLIANT AND I LOVE YOU FOREVER
Personally, I want to see an HP Lovecraft work adapted (No, Remember My Lovecraft does not count), preferably with Junji Ito responsible for the monster designs.

Maybe the Vorkosigan Saga. I could see it being a Studio Gonzo production because they sure love Schizo Tech, and although he's much more heroic, I can kind of see some similarities between him and the protagonist of Desert Punk because both are The Napoleon and tend to pull the same kind of clever gambits.
Irresponsible Captain Tylor is also a pretty good anime equivalent, although Tylor is more like Miles' cousin Ivan.

HodorBecause Hollywood shits things up, while comparatively little is shat up with Japanese doujinshi studios.
Also. Foundation series anime. It will be.....interesting at least.
And some of the Star Wars novels - if the canon is made sufficiently high & they do it right enough it'll help correct the shit in the EU
re. those who said Snow Crash - I raise Little Brother by Cory Doctorow - that has weeaboo all over it. And normalfag, too. >_<
Well if the Japanese get the Bay Area done right, which is possible - see Metal Wolf Chaos
It'd be cool to update The Outsiders into a durarara esque anime, same for the novel that The Warriors is based off.

WHASSUP....... ....with lolis!Because usually it involves compressing longish works into much shorter time-spans than is generally credited as doing justice. It can be done with some of the shorter series (but even then the Nanoha movie was a little over two hours) but generally they aren't the series that get picked up for this sort of thing.
Though the proposed Full Metal Panic movie might escape this if they do it right since the story is so heavily arc based. If they just stick to the 'Girl Meets Fighting Boy' arc they might stand a fighting chance.
And now I'm pondering a Codex Alera anime.
I would love to see purely-visual-medium Abarat of some description, but it would really have to be done well. If the art style wasn't exactly right, it would just been unwatchable. No matter how good the animation was otherwise, it would have to look just perfectly Barkeresque.

On topic; Well, I did like the Saga of Darren Shan based Manga, that'd make a pretty sweet Anime.
