So... I'm probably the only person that cares, but which movie will win best Visual Effects?
Fight. Struggle. Endure. Suffer. LIVE.Ok. While I can, maybe, understand True Grit getting nominated for Best Movie, there's no way that the Coens deserved a namonation for Best Director more than Nolan. Really, for a movie that got ten nominations, you kind of expect more than what it was.
And The Kids Are All Right was simply painfull to watch. I kept waiting for something to happen that would make that movie Oscar-worthy (you know, more than having a lesbian couple in it), and nothing ever did. I am not saying it's a bad movie, exactly (even though I was bored almost from the first scene), but it's not the kind of movie that should be in the top ten best movies of the year.
if i had something clever to say here, i'd sell itAnnette Bening did not deserve a Best Actress nomination (her character is a one-dimensional, unlikeable shrew who never develops past that). Julianne Moore did.
More Buscemi at http://forum.reelsociety.com/I hope that How to Train Your Dragon wins best original score. The other candidates are severely lacking when compared to that score's orchestral complexity, thematic development and overall enthusiasm. There were so many great scores out there that were sadly neglected, but oh well. It's going to be interesting to see who will win in the end; at least I can find solace in the fact that this time Gustavo Santaolalla isn't included.
How To Train Your Dragon easily proved that John Powell can do more than copy his mentor Hans Zimmer but the movie made me wish Jerry Goldsmith was still alive. I kept imagining the scores to The Secret of NIMH and Powder were playing during the film.
More Buscemi at http://forum.reelsociety.com/Black Swan didn't get a costume nom in part because the costumes were split; the ballet costumes were done (or borrowed from) a ballet (if I recall correctly) and the normal clothes were done by a costume designer. Technically the ballet costumes could not be up for a nomination and non-theatrical contemporary costumes are rarely up for nomination. That's more or less my guess at why Black Swan did not get a costume nom.
Colleen Atwood will likely get it for Alice. She's been sweeping the costume awards. Though Sandy Powell's costumes for The Tempest were amazing she did kind of tell the Academy off for continuously nominating her and never giving acknowledgement to non-period or show designs last year - also, who even saw The Tempest? The other's are all kind of period, but not showy period, so they're not as likely to be winners. Out of that bunch, maybe King's Speech, but not likely.
I would have liked to see some non-period/show designs this year, especially after Powell's speech last year. Alas.
Agree with the Colleen Atwood post. I think she's overrated, but she's still likely to win. If anyone other than her did the designs for Alice they wouldn't have gotten a nom, but she did it and she's like the only costumer most people know by name/look.
I would have loved to see Tron nominated for costumes (and be the winner).
So, Alice In Wonderland won Best Art Direction, and Inception won Best Cinematography.
You can't even write racist abuse in excrement on somebody's car without the politically correct brigade jumping down your throat!- I'm with Roger Ebert, someone should really have written the opening.
- Didn't they used to do Best Supporting first?
- Is Kirk Douglas rambling on purpose?
You'd ramble too, if you were that old. Although, he is getting a little
Man, it's amazing what makeup can do for a 14-year-old girl...
And Melissa Leo wins Best Actress.

You can't even write racist abuse in excrement on somebody's car without the politically correct brigade jumping down your throat!Hallie Steinfeld should have gotten the Best Actress nom. Past her bedtime I guess.
The child is father to the man —OedipusApparently the only type of acting the Academy loves is the overacting kind.
And do they really hate Roger Deakins that much?
More Buscemi at http://forum.reelsociety.com/Meh, I haven't seen The Fighter, so I have no real opinion.
Hailie was my favorite, though.
I don't know, let's check- wow that is a long list of losses.
The Lost Thing wins Best Animated Short.
