What a shocking swerve! And also, all of the yes.

I'm wondering if there'll even be unlockable characters this time around... unless Toon Link has transcended unlockable status, that is.

Heck, Ganondorf wielding Ghirahim wouldn't be a terrible idea just in general.

[up]Between the Year of Luigi celebration and the release of Wind Waker HD, I think it could go either way for Luigi and Toon Link.

Alternatively, like with the US Release for Brawl, Sakurai could show every character again.

And a lot of the new characters were starters in Brawl instead of some veterans. Marth, the main FE character had to be unlocked over Ike, the new guy? surprised

But yeah.

Ooh, I'm okay with Ganondorf doing that. I would love to see him dual-wield, though.(I'd hope for Toon Ganondorf, and one of his costumes as a bonus could wield Doublade. Keep in mind Doublade does match up with the types of swords Toon Ganondorf used at the end of Wind Waker)

Just as long as it's not the Executioner's Sword- Everything I know about Zelda told me it should have burnt his hand off trying to wield it.

Yeah, yeah, stupid pet peeve.

Wasn't he called a god in TP? Would explain why it didn't work.

Joking aside, concurred. He has another Sword in TP anyway. Albeit, we have no idea what he'll look like. However, I could see everybody returning with their original base designs from Brawl, but with upgrades to their model like Link.

Toon Link looks a bit different too. A bit more defined.

I am guessing they are saving the eventual screenshot of Wind Waker Toon Link meets Spirit Tracks Toon Link for later.

Welp.

Guess I'm headed down to the supermarket later to see if they have any crow.

(It's gonna be really hard to resist playing as Toon Link on the Spirit Tracks for the sole purpose of cracking jokes about clones and virginity.)

[up] Sad part is, I can't think of any character he could be a decent clone of via a hack. I don't know if a hack of him has been done. Probably of Wario?

@Enlong: I don't think he had much of a chance anyway. Sakurai still has many of Toon Link's moves shown off that regular Link has, so... the "same specials" rule probably wasn't changed. Even if Young Link came back, well...

I agree he'd have been awesome, though.

Mind you, we have no idea if we could get a third Link either. While I doubt it cause that's a whole lot of Links, we have no idea what's going on in his head character-wise at this point. Wii Fit Trainer took a lot of people by surprise as well. Many expected Toon Link to get switched out, if only because one of his versions appears in a stage. I'd say he's too unpredictable to ultimately guess a lot of the roster.

Not that we can't make speculation, just that this'll be the hardest one to guess yet.

Hey, a person that wasn't an automatic shoe-in. Cool. Toon Link was my second main in Brawl, so I'm glad to see him back. Hopefully he and Link will be slightly more distinct, but if not, o well.

At least Pac Man wouldn't be a clone.

Exactly. And not even a good clone like Ganondorf or Falco - at least for them there was effort put into making them somewhat unique from a character perspective. Toon Link is nothing more than a Mini-Me version of regular Link. He never should have been present in Brawl in the first place, and the continued inclusion of Toon Link makes about as much sense as if they decided to bring back the likes of Dr. Mario.

You better believe that for any more unique characters that don't make it in or get cut from Brawl, I'm not going to hesitate to be pointing a finger at Toon Link as a character that easily could have gotten cut without the game really loosing anything of value in order to make a place for them.

Look at the positive side of this. It means that even if Ridley shows up in the Pyrosphere as a stage hazard, he could still be a playable character. Hope is not yet lost.

I still don't see why so many people think Ridley has even a ghost of a chance of becoming a playable character, besides wanting another Metroid rep.

Ridley's a roughly bipedal character and in many ways the main villain of the Metroid series as a whole.

Not sure I'd call him the main villain. A recurring threat, and the one most tied to Samus, but...

He's never been the the main villain of any one game, to be sure, but he's so intimately tied to Samus' origins and shows up so often it's hard not to think of him as being on-par with Bowser or Ganondorf.

Ridley is, like, the most important villain among all the Metroid games(as a whole, or on average, if you will).

Of course seeing him in would be nice. And yeah, we haven't even seen if he could be a stage hazard, notably. Not sure what to think at this point.

@Midna: And similarly I don't see how Ridley doesn't have a chance. Biggest thing againts him is that he is possibly a stage hazard, and that's certainly become more questionable now that the whole "Spirit Tracks Link means no Toon Link" theory has been thrown out the window.

Speaking of which, put me in the camp that's not incredibly excited seeing Toon Link. You just know he's going to be a clone by virtue of "Oh, we can't change Link! Link is Link!" Best possible outcome is that he gets a new Side B and different A attacks, putting him in the same boat as Melee's Luigi, but it's microscopic at best.

I will say this though: The toon-style artwork looks fucking gorgeous.

I was under the impression he was one of the main villains of Prime 1. And he, or at least a mecha version of him, was the final boss of Zero Mission. Plus he's the second most recurring character. He's Metroid's best choice for another rep.
