...Yeah, I suppose I was just being a bit too hopeful that something like that would be possible. Ah well.
While I'm on the subject of the two versions though, I'm curious. Assuming you have the choice, which version are you people planning on getting first? I think I'd still get the 3DS version since I enjoy my handhelds a bit more than my consoles.
I did say "if you had the choice", guys. I'm aware that some of us are simply stuck getting one version and was wondering what your first choice would be.
And yeah, I remember a mention that there'll be some stage differences between versions, but that's it.

I guess it hasn't been confirmed that every stage is different. Although since they bothered to give Battlefield two radically different backgrounds, I'm guessing any stages that might be shared between the versions will still be distinct from each other. Assuming there are some identical stages between versions...cross-platform play would still be severely limited.
Welcome to th:|So far, the whole customizable character(and from what I remember currently, it's just very similar to the Stickers in Brawl, that is, using current characters, but possibly adjusting a character attack direction here and there?) isn't well known or that interesting.
I still wouldn't mind having specific characters per version and having the same final roster.
One issue with Sakurai's wording is that he said "They'll have the same roster". That's... beyond vague and doesn't tell us a damn thing. Does it mean both rosters don't require you to connect to each other to unlock them all? Does it mean you have to connect? Both work with those words.
Shadow? That tells us absolutely nothing about how the roster is unlocked.
We know the end roster is the same for both games and that the characters have the same movesets between games.
We do not know how the roster is unlocked in each and until we do, it's anybody guess to how it'll be done. It's not paranoia, it's an entire lack of usable information.
Shadow?Cross-play is theoretically possible - Sony did with the PS 3 and Vita for their Smash ripoff - but the different stages for each version here do make that quite unlikely.
Suits my state of mind right now...Going back on the stage differences between the 3DS and Wii U versions: the 3DS will have stages based off of handhelds, while the Wii U will be based off of consoles. Hence the train ride from Spirit Tracks in the 3DS version and Skyloft in the Wii U version.
As for which version I'm getting, I'm probably getting both. I like watching the AI beat the crap out of itself and it doesn't seem like I will be able to do that on the 3DS version, but I will get the 3DS version first to make sure.
"We're all paper, we're all scissors, we're all fightin' with our mirrors, scared we'll never find somebody to love."

Online multiplayer was confirmed, but I'm pretty sure cross-platform online multiplayer is a no.
We don't know what connectivity there will be between the two versions, but he's suggested it will be customizing characters on the 3DS and sending them over to Wii U.
You cannot firmly grasp the true form of Squidward's technique!
