You know, I just thought of something.
Suppose the rumors of Steve(?) getting in Smash are true. Minecraft is owned by Microsoft, and so are highly-requested and almost-in-Melee Banjo and Kazooie. If Steve(?) made it into Smash, would this mean that Steve would be the Microsoft rep and Banjo/Kazooie wouldn't be able to make it in?
I mean, I said already that I would gladly welcome Steve(?) into Smash regardless, but I'm in that camp who would be ecstatic to see the bear and bird be in Smash.
(Evidently, I'm not the only one who has this concern
. By the looks of things, people are likely going to flip if Steve gets in Smash.)

You cannot firmly grasp the true form of Squidward's technique!I've actually got a bit of solo time with my daughter coming up (the missus is going on a business trip), so I think it's time to show her King Dedede in action.
Oh, and this technically is more apropos for the amiibo thread, but I managed to snag a Japanese Dedede amiibo for $15 plus shipping. Not new-in-box, but it is undamaged. I'm going to pull out daddy's amiibo and we'll have a grand old time with that, even when Smash isn't on.
I'm actually wondering what will the best mode to play to introduce her to everything. I'm actually thinking All-Star mode; lots happening to show what's going on, but not so frantic (i.e. no 8-player matches) that it'll overwhelm her.
Also, relatedly, I suspect I'm about to get much better with Dedede. I use random generally, so I've played him enough to be mildly competent, but if I'm going to be showing my kid her beloved penguin in a hat and gloves (she loves his hat and gloves), I should really up my game.
EDIT: Oh, also, for my first Smash memories? Sigh, time to feel like an old.
I first remember playing Super Smash Bros. about two months after it came out when I was in my junior year of college. I was the only one in my circle of friends who had an N64, and nobody else was interested (it wasn't an RPG for the Playstation, you see). So I played Smash by myself for the most part. I honestly got it originally to play as Link, but I knew all the characters - in fact, I remember when I got the "new challenger" alert, and Ness came on. I was so shocked that I nearly dropped the controller, and he kicked my ass.
This paid off when Melee came out, because I just had to learn the various tweaks to various characters and mechanics while others had to learn them wholesale. I specifically remembered my friend offering me the controller to play Classic Mode, and me picking Ness right off the bat. He was dumbfounded; how could I pick a character that couldn't even save himself after the double jump? I taught him a lot. Though it was quite the eye opening experience when I was fighting Master Hand and Crazy Hand first appeared. "Wait... the left hand? What's that... Crazy Hand?!"

Reminder: Offscreen Villainy does not count towards Complete Monster.First time I played Smash was Melee at a friend's house. I went straight for Mewtwo
I recognized everyone except for the FE crew, Ganondorf, the Star Fox crew, Captain Falcon, Ice Climbers, and Ness. (I didn't get to see Sheik in action and thus didn't know she was even a character.) I should note I was semi-familiar with G&W, having played Mario's Cement Factory before, so I had a vague idea of what he was based on. (I also remember my friend telling me that Mario's Cement Factory was one of the Break the Target stages~)
By Brawl, I was somewhat familiar with Nintendo stuff at the age of 10 and at least knew Marth and Ike were from something called Fire Emblem, didn't recognize them otherwise. I didn't know who Snake was, or Pit or Wolf or Lucas. I played as Toon Link because he felt like he hit really hard for how fast he was.
By now I'll probably recognize any character that gets added to Smash. Though if Mii costumes count I didn't know who the Virtua Fighter characters were at all.

🏳️⚧️she/her | Vio Rhyse AlberiaI think the term for Dedede is "kinguin".
As for first smashes, I had gotten 64 for its first Christmas, and had a blast of a time cementing it as my favorite game ever at that point. (It's not anymore, but Smash Bros. is still my favorite series, so it was still life changing to me.)
As far as knowing who the characters are:
64: I most certainly knew the Mario Bros., Link, DK, the Pokemon, Yoshi and Kirby; I sort of knew Samus and Fox by osmosis by what games my friends and family had; Captain Falcon was the only complete stranger to me; Ness is exempt from this as I ironically never could unlock him originally, so I didn't even know he was in until Melee. I can tell you he'd be another stranger, though.
Melee: By now I had a good grasp on most 64 characters' home series, so I didn't have trouble with anyone added to those series. This is where I count towards not knowing Ness; Ice Climber wasn't a game we had on our NES, so the Climbers were a nobody to me, and I never even heard of a Game & Watch before, so G-Dubs was also out of my radar; Marth and Roy were Marth and Roy, so recognizing them was straight out the window.
Brawl: At this point, I more or less knew all I could about Nintendo, so not even ROB shook me. That said, I didn't know who Snake was at the time.
And now by 3DS and Wii U, i'm present-day me, so I was able to know everyone off the bat, but I can't say I knew Shulk very well.

The New Age of Awesome is here! Not even the sky is the limit!I first OWNED Smash 64 when I got it for my sixth birthday in 2001, but I was repeatedly renting it from Blockbuster the couple of years beforehand.
I didn't recognize anyone except Pikachu, because my brother was obsessed with Pokémon at the time. I mean, I barely even knew who Mario was.
Melee (which I got Christmas 2003; we were late adopters of the Gamecube despite our wanting one since its release) was the opposite; it was just the FE crew and the Ice Climbers I didn't recognize. I even knew Mr. Game & Watch because of the Gallery series. Even then, I looked up Marth and Roy's trophies and really wished I could play their game when I saw it was Japan Only.
Brawl, I knew everyone except for Lucas, and even then I'd heard the name before because I knew someone named Lucas from Mother 3 was planned for Melee to replace Ness but scrapped. Ike was a pleasant surprise for me since I actually had played Path of Radiance by then.
By the time 4 came around, I knew everyone, no exceptions.

Like I said, you and I need to make that little girl proud.
By the by, 32, if you want some videos of Dedede destroying people's faces, the Dededesgusting
videos are rather entertaining.

Switch FC code: SW-4420-1809-1805Obviously, this means that King Dedede is ADORABLE tier. Which is best tier.
Reminder: Offscreen Villainy does not count towards Complete Monster. In the right hands, Dedede can really be a force to be reckoned with. I actually once Rage Quit online play because of one.
I was already recently trying to re-learn how to Play with Dedede, but this makes me want to try and re-main him, too.
"I'm glad I don't wear shoes or else I'd have to always get shoes in two different sizes. ...If you know, you know!"Started playing Smash on those rental consoles that some hotels have(dunno if they still exist). Rented Smash 64 on it, and immediately loved it. Wasn't very good, but it did introduce me to Samus, who was my main until Brawl. Got a GCN in 2005 with Pokemon XD and Melee, and played that a lot with siblings and friends until Brawl.
Another thing I've noticed is that with each game I tend to get better, like learning to dodge and roll in Brawl, how to tech(waaay overdue) in 4, etc.
Super Smash Bros was actually the second console game I've ever owned, the first being Mario Kart 64. At the time I recognized all of the characters except Samus, Captain Falcon and Ness, but I instantly started maining Samus because I thought she looked cool. (It also wouldn't be until a couple years later that I found out she was a girl.)

No beer?! But if there's no beer, then there's no beef or beans!![]()
I know the Hampton Inn in Williamsport, PA had a thing where you can play Game Cube games for 1 hour per $10. Melee wasn't one of the games it had, though (IIRC, some of them were: Star Fox Assault, The Legend Of Zelda Collection, Metroid Prime 2, Mario Kart Double Dash, and Star Wars Rogue Squadron 3. There were others, but I don't remember what others there were at all.)
I honestly knew who everyone was in 64 because I played Brawl first. In Melee, the only strangers were Roy, Young Link, Dr. Mario, Pichu, and Mewtwo (though I would get Pokemon: The First Movie after I played my friend's copy of Melee, which had everyone unlocked).
By Smash 4, the only strangers were Greninja, Lucina, and Robin. Though I had played a bit of Pokemon X before Greninja was revealed and I played Awakening because Lucina and Robin are in Smash 4. Dark Pit is exempt because I had seen the Brainscratchcomms run of Kid Icarus Uprising by the time the leak happened.
AAAAUUUUGGGHHHH!!!!It's funny because in Brawl I knew literally no one. Only the really big characters rang a bell in my head. Course, I searched the internet back then until I found out about most of the other cast members.
On the flipside, I knew literally everyone from Smash 4. I was a huge Game FA Qs user back then, and I went on the Smash Boards from time to time as well. In those days (like late 2012-E3 2013) everyone had an opinion on the roster. People got it down to a science, from the commonly chosen hot picks (K. Rool, Isaac, Ridley, etc.) to the dark horses (Saki, Lip, Krystal, Animal Crossing Characters) to the characters everyone knew was getting in (Little Mac, Palutena) to the characters everyone knew weren't getting in (Cloud, Dark Pit). So by the time the roster unveils came around the only character I legitimately did not know about was Wii Fit Trainer, because god dammit Sakurai.
By the time I got to Brawl, I knew who a lot of the characters were. Exceptions were: Lucas, Marth, Ike, Lucario (who wound up becoming my main there), Pit, ROB, and Snake. It helped that there had been a long gap between my first exposure to Smash.
"I'm glad I don't wear shoes or else I'd have to always get shoes in two different sizes. ...If you know, you know!"I never owned a 64 or the original Smash until playing it years later on an emulator. I played Melee for a good while but then my Gamecube broke and I played other games until Brawl when I was in full blown Sonic-Fanboy mode.
I wish I could find a Gamecube Controller and a Gamecube memory card so I could play it on my Wii.
You can't get it wrong if it's the truth!

My exposure to Smash was playing 64 when I was about 8 or 9 years old. The only characters I knew back then were Mario, Pikachu and Yoshi.
