Anyway, I hope we hear something about it in next month's Smash Direct, though unlikely.
Now that it's gone, Sakurai and Nintendo are not legally obligated to keep silent about it or else risk losing their trademarks anymore. I want to hear their side of things.

I still suspect that Sakurai himself's actually played it by some subtle things present in 4. But eh.

"It's liberating, realizing you never need to be competent." — UltimatepheerIt's worth noting here that if there is a C&D involved (which honestly I don't think there's much reason to believe at the moment; it really feels more like a "holy shit we need to cover our asses" thing), it would be handled almost entirely by Nintendo's legal department. It's not like Sakurai really gets much of a say on whether or not a fan project gets shut down; for all we know Sakurai himself thinks Project M is awesome, but if legal decides that it could cause issues, they're the one who make that call. Basically, I can't imagine that the developers care a whole lot about fangames beyond how they influence people's experiences of the main games, but the lawyers who work for the company have probably had their eyes on it for a while.
It's like the infamous Fighting Is Magic shutdown; the people who actually made the show were, by all accounts, cool with it, but Hasbro's legal department deemed it a copyright issue and brought down the hammer.

Reaction Image RepositorySad to see, but 3.6 was a solid end to the Project.
Development might go underground by fans, just as it did for Fighting Is Magic, but that's doubtful due to the nature of PM's dwindling popularity.
"There's not a girl alive who wouldn't be happy being called cute." ~Tamamo-no-MaeEverything I'm seeing implies that some members of the PM team were working on something official, and their lawyers freaked out at the possibility of them being screwed by PM's continued existence. Some other members of the team may not have had much of an advance notice, which explains why they were still working on it until very recently.
If they are working on something official, it's definitely not with Nintendo. It's not in their style to pick up a group of modders, especially in the west. Probably some indie game or with a small publisher.
I really hope it's not an indie thing. Rivals of Aether is bad enough already. We don't need another one.

I'm sorry, but what?
Rivals of Aether isn't bad in the least bit. The introduced mechanics are a great twist on the typical Smash formula, and the lore behind it actually has some depth. Not to mention that is isn't even at version 0.1 yet, yet despite that has well balanced characters and stages outside of Kragg and Absa.
I don't see how RoA could be considered "bad enough".

"There's not a girl alive who wouldn't be happy being called cute." ~Tamamo-no-MaeI might get Ro A, since I actually get halfway decent internet on my computer to play online, but I'll wait till it's out of alpha/beta/whatever.
Dopants: He meant what he said and he said what he meant, a Ninety is faithful 100%.It's an indie game modeled after the Smash formula, except it mixes it up with how the characters move and how they interact with the stage. Plus each character is assigned to one of the four elements (fire, water, earth, air) and their moves reflect that.
It's in pre-alpha right now, but totally playable both online and offline. I'd say it's worth the money, but that is really up to the individual. Plus the characters are all fairly unique (though they definitely take a lot of pointers from Smash).

Or lack of Go—- -is shot-
Fangames like Smash Flash, Smash Land, and Crusade are made from the ground up, while PM is a hack. That's why SSF 2 can be at APEX while PM can't.
