In most cases, I always saw the gameplay of RPGs as largely giving an illusion of interactivity to what are basically Visual Novels.
Not that that's a bad thing... usually.
"It's liberating, realizing you never need to be competent." — UltimatepheerI never saw why being railroaded was a huge deal unless it was really blatant or given horrible justifications. As long as the gameplay is fun and the story still makes sense, it shouldn't matter.

Well, the Paper Mario games (especially Super Paper Mario) got rather deep at times and had some good character development.
Except Sticker Star, but we don't talk about that one.
Unpopular Opinion: I don't like Master Core.
- It feels traditional for Master Hand to be the final boss, with Crazy Hand to be a secret; here, they're just a minor obstacle taken down in a couple seconds.
- It's nearly impossible for characters like Bowser, Little Mac, and Ganondorf to get through Master Fortress effectively, doubly so if you're using customs that increase defense. And even when I CAN navigate, here come the laser flowers.
- It drags on too long for something that has to be beaten over fifty times.
- Did I mention the laser flowers? Yeah, how many runs have been ruined by those alone, I wonder...

"It's liberating, realizing you never need to be competent." — UltimatepheerI have a feeling that if a subspace emissary-esque story were to ever happen again, it would be closer to how the chapters worked in Kid Icarus: Uprising.
i can get why you see that. I even agree with you on some points.

Again: Ganondorf and Little Mac.
But I actually didn't know that. Thanks.
"It's liberating, realizing you never need to be competent." — UltimatepheerI don't even have to deal with Fortress and the thing still feels like wooden padding.
"Tell them to shut up and have some faith in me." - dead flashback guyI guess I don't like the new Classic Mode in general, though. The forced 8-player battles are nerve-wracking. I can hardly see my character in the confusion!
And it doesn't feel anything "classic" at all... It has its merits, but it's labelled as being something it's really not.

"It's liberating, realizing you never need to be competent." — UltimatepheerI liked Subspace Emissary a lot, but I was never a fan of the Subspace Army. We have all these universes colliding together for an epic adventure, and it consists of fighting in a bunch of generic backdrops against mostly-generic enemies.
Take Subspace Emissary and combine it with the setpieces of Melee's Adventure Mode and the enemy variety of Smash Run. It'd be something truly magical.
That stage should have stayed in Melee in the first place and we should have gotten the much better Yoshi's Story from Melee when Brawl brought back stages.
Subspace: I liked it overall, but it could have been better. While the friend I mentioned earlier today will defend the Subspace Army, I think we could have used more Nintendo mooks. Since Ganondorf and Ridley are part of the Army, why no Zelda and Metroid enemies? My only other problem was the repetition (Great Invasion could have made a good Star Fox-esque level) and the length (We could have done without Great Maze), and Sonic's late appearance (though it was awesome, I would have preferred him working with Mario).
AAAAUUUUGGGHHHH!!!!
"Better" is relative. While YS is better competitively, YI is more iconic from what I've seen.
I mean... To most people, YS is just a reskin of Battlefield.

Yeah, I think that when it comes to story and gameplay, they can be equal, but if you start prioritizing story over gameplay that's the point where I think where the game starts to suffer. If that happens you don't really have a game, you have a story that uses gameplay as an element.
