To be fair towards that mindset: Mario sux and has no depth lelz.

But more seriously, that's the point. The mario games aren't supposed to be deep. They're supposed to be fun. Which they very much are.
"There's not a girl alive who wouldn't be happy being called cute." ~Tamamo-no-Mae
That's kinda the intent. They're supposed to be fun little adventure for everyone to pick up and enjoy. It's not Dark Souls you know.
Is this a Jo Jo reference?Yeah, the Zelda fandom does have a bit of a rivalry with Mario fans.
I think 10 years ago you would be told that you're crazy that Snake, Sonic, Cloud, Ryu, Mega Man, and Pac Man would all appear in Smash Bros.
Of course, 9 years ago we would have just gotten Super Smash Flash which has Sonic and Cloud in it.
AAAAUUUUGGGHHHH!!!!Mario was fun and I will always love his series but the newer games are just bad.
Except for Mario Maker no Mario game has been really innovative lately. Same with Zelda. Tri-Force Heroes?
It's probably not my cup of tea. (I am super hyped for Hyrule Warriors 3DS) but still, I haven't seen anything that hasn't been done before, and when I do it's unnecessary gimmicks like three links and catsuits.
You can't get it wrong if it's the truth!Lately = 2010 onwards?
There isn't a complete absence of new ideas, the sameness just overshadows the new stuff...and people "hate" the "New" games because anything not completely innovative deserves hate.
Rules of the Internet 45. Rule 45 is a lie. Check out my art if you notice. There's only so many times you can recycle the same thing before it gets old. But I'm a huge COD fan so I guess I shouldn't be talking. I guess what I'm looking for is not just innovation, but just something...
Different. How about a Daisy game? Or a Fire Emblem anime? Or a Zelda movie?
You can't get it wrong if it's the truth! That happened, technically.
Granted, it's just a 2-episode OAV.
Honestly, I think it depends what you want out of the games. The Mario games are gameplay-focused, the Zelda games less-so. It's apples and oranges. Personally, I'd rather have good gameplay with an Excuse Plot than a deep story with lousy gameplay. I can get story from pretty much any other type of media; if I'm playing a video game, I want to play it.
Reaction Image RepositoryThis is actually what I say in response to the whole "story is more important than gameplay" arguments one of my former Livejournal friends tended to give to me, especially when I asked her if I should play Pokemon Gen 1 before Gen 2 when I was talking about gameplay, or really when anyone else gives it:
A good story means nothing to a game when it is not fun to play. (like Sonic '06 I'd say has a decent plot overall, but its gameplay is horrendous)
(Although my friend tried to compare playing Gen 2 before Gen 1 to watching Empire Strikes Back before A New Hope, even though the components needed to make a good movie are different than the components needed to make a good game.)
I've never gotten why some think that story is more important than gameplay in general (It's equally important for RP Gs, but that's really it).

AAAAUUUUGGGHHHH!!!!

Yeah, 10 years ago if you told anybody Mario, Sonic, Pac-Man, Ryu, Mega Man, and Cloud would be in a game together, you would have been laughed at.
