alts = entirely separate character slots
as we all know

"Tell them to shut up and have some faith in me." - dead flashback guyI'd rather not see alts this time around, but I think next game each character should have an unlockable alt costume, which comes with its own 8 palettes as well.
- Mario: Sunglasses and tropical shirt from Super Mario Sunshine
- Luigi: Mr. L
- Peach: Sports attire
- Bowser: Dry Bowser
- Rosalina: Motorcycling uniform
- Bowser Jr: Shadow Mario scarf over his mouth, classic coloration palettes for the Koopalings.
- Dr. Mario: ???
- Yoshi: Yarn Yoshi. I'd also make Yoshi an exception to the 8-palette rule and give him all 10 standard Yoshi colors (He's currently missing white and orange)
- Wario: Overalls, just like he has right now.
- Donkey Kong: ???
- Diddy Kong: ???
- Link: Hyrule Warriors scarf
- Zelda: Hyrule Warriors design
- Sheik: Hyrule Warriors design
- Ganondork: OOT design assuming he's still TP design, TP design if he's got a new design
- Toon Link: Outset Island outfit
- Samus: Fusion Suit (With the Fusion Suit-themed palette replaced)
- Zero Suit Samus: Shorts and top ending outfit like she already has
- Pit: The armor that accompanies the 3 Sacred Treasures
- Palutena: ???
- Ow the Edge Pit: ???
- Marth: Older design
- Ike: Path of Radiance design
- Robin: Female Robin, like he already has
- Lucina: "Marth"
- Roy: ???
- Kirby: ???
- King Dedede: Masked Dedede
- Meta Knight: Unmasked Meta Knight
- Fox: Expert Mode sunglasses
- Falco: Assault design. Or the blocky 64 design, for laughs
- Every Pokemon: I'd overhaul this completely. Their standard palettes would all be accessories like Pikachu and Jigglypuff, while their alternate "costume" would be their shiny palette.
- R.O.B.: ???
- Ness: Pajamas
- Lucas: Pigmask commander uniform
- Captain Falcon: That ridiculous outfit he had in one of GX's scenes
- Villager: Uh... all his current palette swaps are already "alternate costumes", so I'm not sure what he'd get.
- Olimar: I guess Alph, though I'm generally not a fan of alternate costumes being separate characters.
- Wii Fit Trainer: Male WFT, like she already has
- Shulk: Underwear Shulk, like he already has
- Mr. Game & Watch: His classic, disjointed look
- Little Mac: I'd demote wireframe Mac to a single palette, and make his proper alt be the jogging jacket
- Duck Hunt: ???
- Sonic: ???
- Mega Man: ???
- Pac-Man: ???
- Ryu: ???
- Cloud: ???
Can't think of any alt costumes for some of these folk.
You cannot firmly grasp the true form of Squidward's technique! We've seen that Cloud already has alts, at least in the specific sense of the term we seem to be using right now.
Sonic and Megaman have plenty of stuff; the latter obviously has the later iterations to draw from, while Sonic can tap into his if-all-else-fails Classic aesthetic if he's still not allowed to use other colors.
This might as well be a requirement for future Ryu inclusions
, and Pac-Man... could revert to the Ghostly Adventures incarnation for giggles.

"Tell them to shut up and have some faith in me." - dead flashback guyThe look would probably be off for hitbox reasons, but Dr. Mario's alternate could be Dr. Luigi.
Donkey Kong has enough similar characters in his own series that could play functionally similar enough that you have your pick for him. Diddy is the problem because of his tail; Dixie is the closest, and we had the ponytail problem come up already.
You know, if we're going to pull out the Hyrule Warriors designs for the others, Ganondorf has a really badass redesign there, too. Plus, the redesigned Ganon from that game could get pulled in as his final smash.
For Samus, I instead would propose that regular Samus keep the Fusion Suit pattern, along with the Fusion Suit alt getting a classic/varia/gravity suit set of palettes.
For both Pit and Dark Pit, one idea would be to play as the Light Fighter and Dark Fighter characters, respectively, used in team multiplayer arena mode. (Also appropriate, given that the team close to losing has one of their team respawned as Pit or Dark Pit, with the victory condition being beating the other team's angel).
Kirby could become Lololo - that's the only character I could see fitting.
ROB... hmm... maybe walking around with the Stack-Up trays and throwing those discs instead of the spinner.
I think the best way to redo the Villager would be to have prominent NPC characters from Animal Crossing fight. Tom Nook and his nephews are obvious choices, as are Mr. Resetti, Redd, and Lyle.
Sonic, as suggested, could be replaced with Shadow or Silver. That said, I think Metal Sonic would be more badass.
For Mega Man... his final smash already has four possible options. I'd go with X myself, but any of them could work (Mega Man.EXE probably has the best claim, though, as I think his series only appeared on Nintendo systems).
Pac-Man... well, to be Captain Obvious, Ms. Pac-Man.
Ryu has plenty of options, being the template upon which all Shotoclones have sprung, not to mention characters inspired by his look even if they fight differently. Ken, Akuma, Gouken, Sean, Dan Hibiki... heck, for shits and giggles, I'll throw Sakura in there, even though her versions work much differently and she doesn't resemble him in body type at all.
Cloud already has his Advent Children outfit as an alt, which is as different from his original look as some of the others you've suggested. That said, if they wanted a radical difference, they could pull in Lightning from Final Fantasy XIII, who was designed as Female Cloud per Word of God. She'd probably have to swap to one of her last weapons to match the size of the Buster Sword, and while the final smash would look the same, they could change the text box to say Army of One instead.
Reminder: Offscreen Villainy does not count towards Complete Monster. It worked for Alph and the Koopalings. It'll work just as well for Ken and Shadow at least.
"No copyright law in the universe is going to stop me!" ~ Sonic The Hedgehog, Sonic ColoursYeah, that. I haven't had the pleasure of playing GX, but I am familiar with that at least.
Agreed. I'm not a SF player so I didn't know about that.
Like I said, I generally prefer to avoid using entirely different characters as alts. Koopalings and Alph get grandfathered in, but I'd rather not do things like Mega Man X, Ms. Pac-Man, Dixie, ect.
That's true. I just figured I shouldn't pull them all from Hyrule Warriors.

You cannot firmly grasp the true form of Squidward's technique!Shadow was a moveset clone in his debut game and Heroes. It'll work. I doubt they'd put in the effort to make a seperate moveset for a second third party character from the same series. Most of all, I want Shadow as an alternate skin because Sonic's current palette swaps are really bland.

"No copyright law in the universe is going to stop me!" ~ Sonic The Hedgehog, Sonic ColoursI personally like Oo T/Spaceworld Ganondorf more anyways~
The Gerudo legwarmers and boots looks a lot nicer on the eyes than that bulky black armor.
🏳️⚧️she/her | Vio Rhyse AlberiaEveeyone seems to want Ike's costume be his old design from Path of Radiance, but i'd actually go with Priam from Awakening, as it not only is a different enough change to avoid confusion with Ike's default along with it keeping the sword as Ragnell, it also brings the gag of Priam having been named after one of Ike's prototype names full circle. Plus, Priam on his own is pretty cool already, being Ike's decendant as well as being pretty awesome in his own right.
With Ryu, sure making him a different character would be neat, but Street Fighter IV and V have given him plenty of costumes of his own that Nintendo and/or Capcom could use instead.

The New Age of Awesome is here! Not even the sky is the limit!I kind of wonder what Customs Ryu could have had, if he had them, what with the large number of Shoto Clones out there, and the variations that exist of three of his specials.
I'm guessing he could get Sakura's version of the Hadouken, Tatsu and Shoryuken since they're pretty different from the original (Her Hadouken can be charged but goes a shorter distance, Tatsu goes in an arc and Shoryuken is multihit) and I guess a fire Shoryuken that could be of the "stronger but slower" type.

Priam's cool but I doubt they'd include a very obscure bonus character.
The Koopalings get in as an alt because they're iconic and very popular, and Alph gets in to give Pikmin 3 some representation outside of the stage.
