I'm sure Cloud will make some kind of sense when Sakurai explains in the Smash Direct next month.
Like Snake had the reason of "Kojima is Sakurai's best friend".
"It's liberating, realizing you never need to be competent." — Ultimatepheer![]()
Is Cloud really so impossible that we need an official explanation as to why he's in?
Don't get me wrong, it's still baffling as all hell, but it's not completely nonsensical. And besides, I think "Sakurai is a batshit sorceror" is a suitable-enough answer.

I can understand why he's in, it's the how that took a lot of people by surprise. He's way more associated with the PS consoles than Nintendo, so nobody was really expecting him.
Reaction Image RepositoryIf Young Link, Pichu, Squirtle, Ivysaur, Wolf, Snake and Ice Climbers were to come back for Smash 5 on the NX, what upgrades would ya want for them?
Also, since Capcom has two reps in the form of Megaman and Ryu, what second rep would you want for the other 3rd Parties represented for Smash 5? (Sega, Konami, Namco and Square Enix)

I'd just like to point out about the statistics
last page: the average age is very misleading, and from a statistical standpoint doesn't amount to much.
A bell curve would be much more appropriate, since extremes on either side (especially on the older side) would heavily balance the the average to be older- evident by the 27% of 50+ group. It doesn't help that they grouped 18-35 years old together (on page 3), further hindering accurate statistics. Of course that would be the largest group, it holds the most ages in it. It needs to be further divided in order to actually get an accurate measurement.
Another issue is the fact that they define gamer as "3 or more hours a week", especially since they don't define what "social games" are. This means that a much larger pool for what defines a "gamer" has been established, one that is wholesomely inaccurate as a representation for data collection.
Finally, the fact that they represent their data as an infograph is concerning. Infographs are notorious for misrepresenting data in order to forward a certain ideology, and to make people think the data is supporting something that it really isn't supporting. This source is no exception. It spends no time explaining how they collected their data, only showing what they think their data means, which really hinders its credibility.
tl;dr: take the source with a grain of salt.

x4 From Sega, I'd want to see someone from an Atlus-imprint franchise, like Jack Frost or Protector.
Capcom's already got two fighters, and they're both excellent choices.
Namco- I'd like to see Cress or Lloyd, though I'd settle for any other Tales lead.
SE- Slime or Erdrick's Descendent as a composite DQ lead, this one's easy.
Konami: Assuming the shitstorm going on right now doesn't kill 'em, Snake's return and Simon-as-composite Belmont would both be nifty.

I sure said that! You may notice that we aren't.
"Tell them to shut up and have some faith in me." - dead flashback guyWhat's Roy saying in his side taunt?
Call me butter, because I am on a roll! 3ds friend code: 5258-0885-3903 Wii U: Bowser CharizardHmm... possible inclusions from the other third-party publishers...
Konami - beyond bringing Snake back, of course, I think a Castlevania rep is obvious. Soma might actually be the best choice - with the souls he's captured, he'd have a wide possible moveset. Failing that, Alucard (who was in Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse'), since he was the main player character in the series' most popular entry (even if said entry has never graced a Nintendo console).
Sega - Hrm... They could go with a second Sonic character; don't know which. That said, I'd love to see them throw a huge curveball and bring back Alex Kidd. Nobody would see it coming.
Namco - Hmm... a Tales representative seems like the obvious choice, and I think Yuri Lowell of Tales of Vesperia (who's in both Project X-Zone games, so he's as much of a stretch as Cloud) would be most likely. That said, I think they'd go a completely different route. Namely, they'd pay Nintendo back for loaning them Link in SoulCalibur II ages ago and put a character from the Soul series in. It'd be interesting to see Nightmare or Cervantes get in, though if they picked Mitsurugi, I'd be disappointed but not surprised. If, on the other hand, they went with Tekken (and I would expect they would; if Capcom is going to pull from their flagship fighter, Namco will too), Heihachi is the obvious choice.
Square Enix - They could do a generic Hero character from Dragon Quest and make the different appearance options match with the canonical appearance of the first eight games' heroes. They could do what they always do and put Sephiroth in, because Cloud can't go anywhere without Sephiroth getting in (also, I predict a remix of "One-Winged Angel" would be used instead of the original; it's too long otherwise). That said, I'll go with Sora instead, as his moveset seems the most friendly for Smash incorporation.
Reminder: Offscreen Villainy does not count towards Complete Monster.Kingdom Hearts might get in via indirect means, as I believe the most recent version of One-Winged Angel is from the HD 2.5 ReMIX version of Kingdom Hearts II.
Well, both Brawl's main theme and "One-Winged Angel" were composed by Nobuo Uematsu, so there's that.

Call me Willy Whistle 'cause I can't speak, baby. Something in TV Tropes really drove me crazy. For another Sonic character, I'd think that either Tails (the original sidekick) or Eggman (the main villain) would be the most clear choices. Especially because you could get pretty inventive with their movesets. Tails would be like a reverse Little Mac with a crazy air game, but super light and having very few good ground options, with some of his gadgets thrown in for specials and his plane as the final smash. Eggman would be robot city, for obvious reasons.
Reaction Image RepositoryWell, since the theme to Brawl was mentioned, there is the Bat Deduction theory that I had for the December announcement, but even I think it's too silly for words.
This Direct had a reveal of Cloud from Final Fantasy VII. Square Enix obviously is cool with putting their characters in Smash. Then we look over and notice that they're doing an announcement for Smash in December. This notice was shown as the main theme for Super Smash Bros. Brawl (the choral version of "Audi famam illius..."). This was composed by Nobuo Uematsu, famous for his work on many of the most famous Final Fantasy games. The announcement will thus connect to him. And his favorite of the series to work on was Final Fantasy IX. Thus, the announcement is that Zidane will get into Smash, and that S-E is going to do a remake of FF9 for the WiiU.
If all of that somehow happens, I will do a suitably ridiculous YouTube video in response.
Reminder: Offscreen Villainy does not count towards Complete Monster.

Personally I think the "do kids know this character?" is a factor, but there's no one set criteria. It's the sum of all of them. Comparing Roy with Cloud is a crapshoot because pretty much each individual character's circumstances are different. Roy may have gotten in because of Melee, but that doesn't really reflect anything about why Cloud was included.
