This is discussed on Smash's YMMV page, under "Animation Age Ghetto".

Rated E is "E For Everyone" for a reason.
This is only true for 64. The other games are rated T or E 10+.

[up]Then we'll just have to disagree with each other then.

Whether it's their target audience or not, though, that doesn't change the fact that it's a significant slice of their audience and will probably be catered to at least in some way.

They cater to audiences, definitely. But not age groups. It's more regional groups. Take Little Mac for example. Popular in the west, not as much in Japan.

I became a Nintendo fan recently, and I'm 21. Also, I don't know about you, but I doubt that many kids under 12 particularly care that the KBG on Robin's dthrow was reduced and the BKG was increased in patch 1.1.0 so that he now has a kill confirm out of grab at around hundred percent on middleweights, or that Ganondorf's nair was reworked so it's a true combo from dthrow at 0%, or that the shield damage on Marth's shield breaker needed to be nerfed from 30 to 25 in order not to cause guaranteed shieldbreaks uncharged after the shieldstun formula was reworked in order to make the game punish excessive shielding more strongly.

My point being, Smash is hardly only catered to kids.

Given Brawl had M-rated only at the time Solid Snake and Cloud Strife from the T-rated (and notoriously most vulgar, lewd, and otherwise objectionable Final Fantasy in the franchise)'s inclusion was a megaton announcement that set the internet on fire, I don't really think little kids are the only audience this game targets.

I got sidetracked. I'm mainly just trying to say we're not the only people who exist.

It came out all muddled, as usual.

Okay. I've been playing my brother and this is what happens:

1.He spams projectiles
2.I close in, he rolls around
3.I f-smash and miss, OR I try to roll behind him
4.He rolls right behind me, every time without fail no matter who he's playing as, directly behind me.
5.He grabs, throws, follows up if he can
6.Repeat forever For Massive Damage.

Every.Fucking.Time.

And I can't beat it!

Of the Smash 4 newcomers, who are even catering to children? Greninja? Pac-Man? The Mii Fighters? Maybe Bowser Jr?

[up][up]There's a difference between being 100% family-friendly and catering towards children.

But if you have to name names, Pikachu and Charizard?

[up][up]When fighting someone that campy, how to beat them depends on the character. Generally, figuring out their way of moving and finding a counter for it is the way to go.

Definitely Greninja, Villager, and the Miis. I'd argue Pac-Man too, though he's so big he goes for everyone.

[up][up]He plays Mario and Pikachu when trying to troll me and Greninja normally.

As for movement, he rolls like it's going out of style.

Humorously enough, I'd be tempted to argue Pacman was for the older gamers who have a better chance of recognizing him tongue

Anyway, I'd be up for playing with people from TvT sometime except I've only got 3DS

Fair enough, but I can hope that there's some evidence that you don't have to play only M-rated games if you're a 'grown up' gamer, right? tongue

Well, they could have Street Fighter IV. But yeah, Cloud is not very known amongst kids.

Really, though, how many younger kids knew who Mega Man was until Smash 4? Or Fox, Captain Falcon, Samus, Link, the FE crew, Ness, Lucas...

I think you put too little faith in kids. They can know more or less about some series than you think they would. Although, some characters would be a stretch, such as Lucas, whose game has never made it out of Japan.

Then again, it's hard to go a day without hearing about some indie RPG or another that doesn't wear its EarthBound inspiration on its sleeve.

I sure said that!
