Wait, really? Where was that said?

Look back at the trailer and you'll see that when they're demonstrating the stage a red orb flies by and also the fact that unlike earlier in the trailer where he does the "spell casting" animation the symbols appear around him and he has a red Aura.
Every time the summons show up after that Cloud has a red aura around him except when it's Ifrit, then it's Toon Link
For FFVII trophies, I'd say the most likely candidates are Sephiroth (main villain), Aerith (for her death being one of the most famous moments in gaming history), a Moogle (series mascot) or a Chocobo (see Moogle).
As for new characters, I'm thinking that for the ballot. K. Rool is likely, and after Splatoon did so well, Inklings aren't much of a stretch either. Shovel Knight... I could go either way. He got an amiibo, but outside of that there isn't much pointing towards his involvement. So he's possible, but not as likely.
Reaction Image RepositoryOh man, can you guys imagine Palutena/Viridi's Guidance for Cloud?
Pit: That. Sword. Is. HUGE! Almost gives Magnus' sword a run for its money! Almost.
Viridi: It's called the Buster Sword, and its wielder is one Cloud Strife. An ex-S.O.L.D.I.E.R. for the organization AVALANCHE.
Pit: Cool names.
Palutena: Cool names aside, Cloud and his Buster Sword have vanquished the evil madman Sephiroth twice, so it shouldn't come as a surprise that they're a force to be reckoned with, Pit.
Viridi: While the Buster Sword looks big and strong, it shouldn't be hard to dodge. What you should be worried about are the Limit Breaks.
Pit: Uh, "Limit Breaks"?
Palutena: Cloud's power only magnifies with the Limit Breaks. If you get hit by them and have enough damage, it's over.
Pit: So when in doubt, float like a butterfly, sting like a bee. Got it, Lady Palutena!
Viridi: Sigh, I wonder if Cloud's seeing anyone. He's so dreamy. (n3n).
Palutena: Pretty sure he's already got someone or two in mind already. And they're probably way out of your league.
Viridi: Tch, who asked you?
Sorry if my knowledge (or lack thereof) of the FFVII mythos is off. (Haven't seen Advent Children yet...

Good idea for sure, but you know how the Palutena's Guidance of DLC characters goes.
Call me Willy Whistle 'cause I can't speak, baby. Something in TV Tropes really drove me crazy.I don't think Shovel Knight getting an amiibo would mean anything for his inclusion in Smash. They'd still have to make another one for his Smash pose if Shovel Knight became a fighter. The amiibo just means the game was popular enough for him to warrant Yacht Club to get permission for an amiibo.
Although, if there was going to be an Indie rep, I'd count on Shovel Knight more than Shantae.
Yeah, you pretty much nailed it, both in the sense of the FFVII references and the tone of the Guidance things. All it's missing is a reference to the cross-dressing.
I know almost nothing about Shantae. I want to play the games eventually, but I haven't had a chance.

Reaction Image RepositoryThat was pretty good! And... now I ship Viridi and Cloud. Gee, thanks.
Here's my potshot at it:
Pit: What's got her so happy?
Palutena: Cloud's a member of an eco-terrorist group called AVALANCHE. He joined after defecting from Shinra- the corporation hurting the environment- so it's no surprise she'd root for him.
Pit: Eco-terrorist, huh? Sounds like a-
Viridi: GOOD GUY. And the correct word is "freedom fighter."
Pit: How's his scrawny arms swing that thing around anyways? His arms must be tired.
Palutena: Said Mr. "Swings Around a Skyscraper on a Stick."
Pit: It's lighter than it looks, I swear! A-anyways, this Cloud guy's going down.
Viridi: Don't count on it, featherbrains! Once he's got a Limit Break charged up, any one of his Special Attacks will be enough to send you flying!

🏳️⚧️she/her | Vio Rhyse AlberiaWell, there's always youtube. I did that mainly because I'm too lazy to go through and manually watch them all.
Also, did we ever get a release date or at least a general timeframe for when Cloud gets released? When I first watched the trailer I was too distracted and I'm too lazy to look it up now.

Reaction Image RepositoryI don't see what exactly Shovel Knight makes Shovel Knight "more likely" than Shantae, really.
If anything, Shovel Knight's support just kind of waned until the "OMG AMIIBO SK CONFIRMED" thing happened while Shantae had a slow-but-steady rise. It doesn't rule him out in anyway, but both of them have their own pros and cons that the mad genius will weigh for himself.

The trailer didn't specify when Cloud's coming.
But I think it's safe to say that we'll find out in the Smash Direct next month.
EDIT: BTW, how do you guys like Palutena's Guidence anyway? I saw a You Tube video that was comparing them to the Codecs from Brawl and they're kind of venomous towards the Guidence messages. Which is a shame because I quite like the Guidance.

Both he and Midgar appear to be more or less finished aside from last-minute balance tweaks, at least. I expect both not long into December.
As for the Guidances... They're okay, but they're a little too focused on gameplay terms and KI:U in-jokes. The CODEC chats Snake had in Brawl had much more clever writing.

I sure said that!Cloud basically killed what little chance I thought Shovel Knight had. Whatever relevancy Cloud has towards Nintendo, he is clearly an icon, just like all the other third party characters. They are true all stars. Indy characters are not. Icons are what are coming to Smash, not small western games with an enthusiastic fanbase.
Which probably means Shovel Knight is coming next just to screw with me.

Shovel Knight also has no Japanese release and his NFC figure is an amiibo only because of the chipset used- The figures are being made by Yacht Club, not Nintendo.
I sure said that!
