It looks like Cloud is going to be one of those "shock value" characters that everyone is going to go "WTF" at first and then will become loved soon as an addition to Smash, à la Wii Fit Trainer and Duck Hunt.
As for Cloud himself...eh. I mean, it's cool that he's in and lots of gamers recognize him, but he just looks like another swordsman to me. My knowledge of the Final Fantasy series, especially of VII, is minimal, so to fans his moveset must probably be bursting with fanservice. Maybe he has a twist to the usual swordfighter like Shulk that I'm just not aware of right now. But either way, very, uh, unexpected.
Call me Willy Whistle 'cause I can't speak, baby. Something in TV Tropes really drove me crazy.I mean, I'd be pretty shocked if his Down Special isn't Finishing Touch or Meteorain- Big slow projectile attacks, basically- considering how his Limit Breaks are, at least in concept, as central to his fighting style as Shulk's Monado Arts.
Basically, think more Robin and less Link or Marth, though more balanced in terms of magic and sword-bashing ratios.

I sure said that!Limit Breaks should make for a good variation on his fighting style.
It's Cloud
In Smash
Hit the nail right on the head there.
That song has been remixed and remastered how many times already? ...Eh, who cares!? SEPHIROTH!

"Yeah, it's a shame. Here we are in an underground cave with all these lasers, and instead of having a rave we're using it for evil."I must admit that, Wolverine Publicity aside, I do like the fact Cloud being in means we have another "gaming legend" in Smash, alongside Ryu.
Also, this seems to be the most polarized inclusion I've seen yet, even here, which is saying something.
As for promotions, Dissidia Arcade is still on the horizon, as is the Final Fantasy VII Remake, so it's not like there's nothing new coming up for Cloud in the near future.
The only complaint I really have with Cloud is he's scrawny!Cloud instead of muscles!Cloud. I still don't understand why scrawny!Cloud is the iconic one...
But hey, the Advent Children costume looks really cool anyways. Again, I want him entirely based off of the cool factor.
🏳️⚧️she/her | Vio Rhyse AlberiaI'm not even a Final Fantasy fan, but I got SO MUCH HYPE
From what it looks like, his Limit Break might be similar to Little Mac's Power Meter, but for more than just one attack.
Basically, like an overdrive you can go in to if you meet certain conditions. That'll be INCREDIBLY satisfying.
(Edited out because apparently I still don't know how to control my anger.)

Estrogen Brigade bait...
And Pacman.
EDIT: Wait, Pacman was popular with the ladies.
Mega Man, then!

Dear Christ, we're just going to snatch-n-grab all the third-parties, aren't we?
Someone mentioned PSASBR, and I gotta admit it's a bit depressing. Poor thing had to jump for that third-party support, and was forced to play ball and plug a bunch of other games. PSASBR back then would've been forced to throw in a gutted Lightning had SE actually gave a shit about them. But then here comes Nintendo, picking up gaming icons left and right, coming in and just like "Yo, we want Cloud, we got this".
And more shit coming in December? Hype train too OP, plz halp.
82962 The only way I can see myself not complain about Panel de Pon is if Nintendo decides to stop trying to bury it, which won't happen, at least not anytime soon. Which is a shame, because there's so much to love about it.

pearlina brainrot affects millions of people worldwide. if you or a loved one are suffering from pearlina brainrot, call 1-800-GAY-NERDSI do kinda hope we cap out at seven third party characters, though- I dunno, it sounds weird to me to imagine an Eight-Player Smash battle where everyone can pick a different character and no one picks someone from Nintendo's library. We're up to five right now!

You have to understand, though, you have a serious case of Fan Myopia every time a character is announced.
And please keep it away from the Insecurities thread.

"It's liberating, realizing you never need to be competent." — UltimatepheerI am convinced that time and logic itself have ceased to make sense. I feel like I reached some new euphoric high when I realized that Cloud got into Smash Brothers before Sony would dare to put him in Playstation All Stars.
Sakurai's mind is an enigma. We try to work around it, we try to reason our way into it. "It's between Isaac and K. Rool" we say to ourselves, "Inklings are a lock", we say to ourselves, "Wolf might happen", we say to ourselves.
We convince ourselves that we can ever understand the endless labyrinth of the Mashed Potatoes Samurai and that really frightens me. I'm a huge smash nerd, and I remember from 2012-2014 spending hours with other nerds on sites from Game FA Qs to Smash Boards trying to figure out the perfect Smash Roster, and yet every time Sakurai finds some new way to outsmart our expectations.
On an offhand note, while I'd be hype for Lip as much as the next guy... it's probably not happening. Honestly I've been rooting for Saki from Sin and Punishment for god knows how long but there's just a point where you have to stop caring.

On the plus side, does this make Cloud (Potentially) the only non-link sword user to not have a counter?
