You know, customs are a really neat idea that I want to see return in the next Smash. But they really need to make 'em all available from the start, or change the acquisition system so they're not as time-consuming and annoying to obtain. Why they never allowed you to buy custom moves—or even custom bags like the ones you already randomly obtain—with your in-game coins always confused me. Especially since after a certain point, the Trophy Shop will become useless thanks to it mostly stocking already obtained trophies (they could change those redundant trophies to the aforementioned bags, for example)...
Half the reason I don't really want to get the Wii U version is because I don't want to grind for everyone's customs again, especially since it lacks Smash Run, which I felt was a good way to grind without it feeling too tedious.

I played Trophy Rush over and over.
Much quicker. If you have the gold anyway.
Also I made a list of all the fighters I didn't have all the customs for so I knew who to grind for.
Tellingly, they were my least used.
You gotta believe me when I scare you away, all that I wish for is that you would stayThe lesson we can take from this is to never trust pre-release statements.
De Romanīs, lingua Latina gloriosa non fuī.I guess the idea was that you'd unlock them all just by playing, not considering that no one would ever play that much.
Also, they should've made the customs all unlockable through 8 challenges for each character: one for every custom move.
"There's not a girl alive who wouldn't be happy being called cute." ~Tamamo-no-MaeYou don't HAVE to unlock customs through repetitive tasks. There's Classic mode, Trophy Rush, Smash Run or Smash Tour (not quickly on Smash Tour), and amiibos...
But if you want customs for a certain fighter fast, Smash Run and Trophy Rush are best.
You gotta believe me when I scare you away, all that I wish for is that you would stayI somehow feel like that Smash 5 is going to happen. Why wouldn't it? Smash has proven to be a success for Nintendo, so they could likely get another director for Smash 5.
I'd rather Smash not die. It is, IMO, the best gaming franchise ever. It appeals to all types of gamers. It is simple enough for casuals, while gaming fans and geeks will enjoy all the references and are likely to know who all the characters are, and it's proven to have a massive competitive scene based on Melee and Smash 4 alone. Even fangames like Smash Flash 2 have appeared at stuff like APEX.

That's not what Sakurai seems to want.
Still, we've seen time and again that what he says and what he does aren't always congruent, so...

Switch FC code: SW-4420-1809-1805Smash 5 is gonna happen no doubt. It's like Mario Kart: every new Nintendo console will have their own installment of the series.
And if they start running out of new ideas, they can just bring back old ideas that people liked but were scrapped in newer games. Like bring back Adventure Mode or Subspace Emissary, Break the Targets, etc.
And new unexpected characters. Smash four had two huge whatthefucks: Duck Hunt and Wii Fit. And many people now adore the stupid dog instead of hating it.
Mario Party is up to its tenquel and it has handheld spinoffs. Mario Kart is up to its eightquel.
Video games can have so many sequels if they're popular enough not particularly for new characters, new stories, or new features. Sometimes it's just playing what's basically the same game on a newer shinier console.
That's kind of how I was for Mario Kart on Wii.
But I didn't get Mario Kart 8 because I had already gotten bored of the Mario Kart experience...I've had fun, but these days I look for really new things in my games.
Smash 4 had customizable fighters AND tie-in functional collectable toys. ;p
You gotta believe me when I scare you away, all that I wish for is that you would stayMe? Oh no, I have plenty of games lined up. Star Fox Zero, Zelda Wii U...
I'll still buy sequels if they seem particularly have-worthy to me. I'd get Pikmin 4 and Super Mario Galaxy 3 and a new console Metroid...
Though I do need things like new features and new stories. I quit Pokemon after generation 1 because I realized I could never catch em all and I quit on Kirby because it started feeling too kiddish for me.
Also, I never liked Call of Duty. For some reason I got gifted Modern Warfare 1 AND 2 and they're two of the only popular video games I've ever sold.

You gotta believe me when I scare you away, all that I wish for is that you would staySmash 4 will not only be Nintendo's second best selling game this gen (possibly best, though I doubt it), it'll also be their #1 source of selling DLC. Plus Smash has all sorts of periphery benefits like advertising for other series, getting the FGC invested into Nintendo, and the general excitement Smash brings to the table. There is no question as to whether Smash 5 will happen, with or without Sakurai.
There's always new stuff to add, especially since the platform fighter genre hasn't exactly been milked to death. Mechanical tweaks, new modes, a more engrossing story mode, there are always new things that can be added. Or they can just add a dozen new characters and call it a day, and it would probably sell just as well anyway.

Spent all day trying to grind Classic for Charizard customs. My results: four customs, one of which I lost upon losing a life (but don't worry, I sure kept the Mii costumes!), and the other three I already had, including one I got twice in the same batch.
