The modders would probably be thrilled, yeah. Doesn't mean that Nintendo's legal team wouldn't have cause to say "Can't do that, too risky" if there is potential for someone to take legal action over it... But copyright laws confuse me, especially where fan-work is involved, so I don't know if that could be a thing or not.
The Ridley discussion? Never heard this before.
End of the day, Sakurai doesn't want Ridley playable, and I can see why. Ridley is a very boss-like entity and removing too much from him basically makes him a different character. If Ganondorf never obtained the "dorf" part of his name and was always a giant pig creature, I imagine he'd get the same treatment. Bowser is super cartoony and even in his own games is more comical than intimidating. And Mewtwo is, well, he's realistically just a Pokemon.
I think Ridley has a fun position as a stage boss. It suits him.
I'm pretty sure the concept of Law having limits was a translation error. -WanderlustwarriorI just wish Ridley-boss wasn't so pattern based like a Kirby boss. Part of the "fun" with Ridley is how erratic and jerky his movements are.
And
yeeeeeeeeeee~
I'm not sure if they'll have a trailer to show off for Smash by then, but we'll see.
That's kinda old news anyway.

Just want to point out that two of those three other characters you mentioned are also functionally entirely different from their canon appearances.

"Tell them to shut up and have some faith in me." - dead flashback guyTo be fair, Wario only farts in one attack and a victory animation.
As much as I hate Metroid, even I think that making Ridley a stage boss, a hazard so intrusive and distracting that even most casual players hate it, was just plain a dick move towards his fans.

"It's liberating, realizing you never need to be competent." — UltimatepheerYellow Devil is annoying and hard to dodge, but he's weak so he won't be K Oing you. Ridley's attacks aren't nearly as in-the-way, but he hits like a truck and woe to you if another player teams up with him first.
And of course, Metal Face is easily ignored and simple enough to beat. But he brings some of the greatest moments in the game with him via his dialogue.
