There's also the matter of how fickle Game Freak is. Even Sakurai's complained about how hard they are to work with.
It's the reason Pikachu, Jigglypuff, and Lucario have such shitty alt costumes in the first place. Game Freak demanded it.
Same with Sonic and Pac-Man with their respective companies, many suspect.

I'm actually kinda curious about why Lucario has costumes that are more-or-less tinted versions of his usual look with differently colored bellies, while Greninja and Charizard(!) have so much variety to their colors.
I think Jigglypuff and Pikachu having hats might be a holdover from SSB 64, though I'd love to have a Pachirisu-colored Pikachu one day.
As for Sonic, well... at least he's a LOT better about his colors in this game. They're still different shades of blue, but at least they aren't all the SAME shade.

🏳️⚧️she/her | Vio Rhyse AlberiaTP Ci is also pretty much unreasonable and dumb as bricks, and the only reason their strategy works is because it is hard to fuck it up with Pokemon.

Come to think of it, does Ms. Pac Man even have a trophy? You'd think she would considering her game's status.

"It's liberating, realizing you never need to be competent." — UltimatepheerThey don't have Sonic turn other colours because those are original characters not to be stolen.

I think that using Mecha Sonic from Sonic the Hedgehog 2 would be the more appropriate choice.
@Raichu: I don't think its size really matters all that much. I mean, if they just colored it like Raichu, then changed the ears and tail, I would find that perfectly acceptable.

The sad part is, that's probably genuinely a factor.
Sakurai was probably like;
"Falcondorf complaints? I'm used to it. Goku requests? Kids will be kids. But I am not dealing with frivolous theft accusations."

"It's liberating, realizing you never need to be competent." — UltimatepheerAlso, I just remembered. We all know how people joke about that obscure Famicom game with the Monkey King whenever "Goku for Smash" comes up, while we know that probably wouldn't happen due to the sheer obscurity. After all, that's what locked Takamaru out.
But he could be a candidate with another niche, because that Famicom game's not the first time Nintendo's used the guy. In fact, Nintendo's use of the Monkey King predates Mr. Game & Watch by a year
.
You're overexaggerating the Hitbox Dissonance in this series. There was a case where it was that bad — Meta Knight when 4 was first released — and it drove everyone nuts. None of his attacks that looked like they should have hit did.

"It's liberating, realizing you never need to be competent." — UltimatepheerAlso, 4 Samus and Mewtwo are considered the two worst characters in the game for a reason.
"It's liberating, realizing you never need to be competent." — UltimatepheerWhy are you fighting so hard for Raichu, anyway? Hell, Pikachu's not even relevant anymore. I have to actively remind myself that he's in the game.
At least Jigglypuff has Joke Character value.

Yep, quite noticeable difference...

Would have made a FAR better clone than Pichu.
