the way i see it, it isn't broken up into two categories, but five.
- Hardcore: These are the people that play because that's what they're about. Gaming's their life, for better or for worse. These are the people that usually have adamant opinions on topics, including fangames. Though, don't confuse hardcore with adamant asshole. Hardcore just means that you play a game because you love to game, and that's what you're all about. Think Smash Tourney players and high level League players.
- Gaming Geek: These people enjoy playing games, and will recognize pretty much all game series. Similar to the Hardcore, they love playing games. But, it isn't their life. They indulge in their passion, but play a wider variety of games and do more things. More likely than not to be Nintendo fans. Though, don't think that they can't be as good as the hardcore players!.. they just spend less time on it.
- Gaming Fan: This is similar to the Gaming Geek, but they spend less time and energy on it. Their interests are mostly not gaming related, but they still love playing games all the same, and probably recognize most franchises, or at least the main characters. These people make up the majority of the gaming population, and probably stick to either Xbox or Sony, and sometimes Nintendo. It isn't particularly a passion for them, but rather one of their favorite ways to spend a day.
FilthyCasual: These people play games because they're fun, though they don't know too much about many franchises beyond maybe Legend of Zelda or Fallout. Almost definitely stick to one system, and are the most likely to disregard Nintendo as "for kids" because they're not invested enough to play through Nintendo games. Which is fine, it's how they choose to play the games. Though, their interests stick entirely to the big name titles, and they don't mind not delving deeper.- Non-Gamer: They almost never play games. Not interested. Sure, they might own a system; maybe due to a family member owning it, or maybe because they have friends that like to play games with them. Might own newest GTA or CoD, might not. They know Pokemon, GTA, CoD, Mario, because who hasn't? But try to talk with them about Street Fighter and they'll be entirely lost. But they can appreciate a good video game when they sit down to play.
And, of the people most likely to play fan games, it would probably be the Gaming Geek. Though, even then that's still generalizing.

"There's not a girl alive who wouldn't be happy being called cute." ~Tamamo-no-MaeI play Atlus games and have 100% most of my collection, including such gems as F-Zero GX. That probably says it all right there.

I sure said that!So I got myself a Mewtwo amiibo...
Not sure if it unlocks the character if not purchased, but I'm impressed by the figurine...
Has anyone ever noticed how difficult it is to explain Smash to someone who has never played it before?
One day I was playing Brawl when my dad came in and asked if he could play, so I tossed him a remote and he selected Snake.
Well, not only did he have no idea what was going on, the directions I was giving him just wound up confusing him. To make matters worse, he was pressing buttons on his remote as I was trying to select a stage, resulting on us winding up on 75m when I had been trying to get to Battlefield. He spent the entire match either walking off the stage despite me trying to explain the concept of Up-B moves to him, or trying to reach me and the CPUs only to fail and fall off the stage.
Needless to say, he hasn't touched a Smash game since.

"I'm glad I don't wear shoes or else I'd have to always get shoes in two different sizes. ...If you know, you know!"No offense toward your dad, but if he didn't understand how to use menus(since he was pushing buttons on a menu), I don't think he'll get how Smash works.
Also, my mom caught on fast how games work after observing a long time. She just isn't interested in actually playing.

I should note that most of my gaming time now is taken up by either Smash Wii U or Smash Flash 2.
