Wait...did somebody say Little Mac would be one of the least known characters in the game? And Duck Hunt? Somebody might be able to lucky guess Little Mac as guy from Punch Out and the dog doesn't look too different from his 8-bit self, but I don't think you can say the same for Marth, Roy, or the Ice Climbers.

Remember that people who were born after Mario 64 came out are turning 20 next year.

True, but I'm sure Duck Hunt and maybe Punch Out has found their way into some pop culture. Same can't be said about early Fire Emblem (or even later Fire Emblem) and Ice Climber.

I think the FE lords (sans possibly Roy) are known enough. Not known to the non-gamers but to those that have played Smash Bros (unless they're like one of my former livestream friends and have only played 64).

I would definitely agree on Ice Climbers and Game and Watch not being well-known.

It is difficult to judge popularity as what's popular is different between countries. Like, in Japan, Sonic and Samus aren't too popular. Whereas in America and Europe, they are considerably more popular.

Question: Do you think that casual Smash fans will really get anything from playing the fan games like Smash Flash 2 or Crusade?

I dunno. Casual fans probably aren't going to go out and seek those options, especially if it's something like Project M that mostly caters to the competitive side. They're likely content with what they've got and aren't so into it that they seek other games like it, especially if they're not hardcore gamers.note

Well, fangames are generally more leaned towards the competitive side, as some of them (namely Crusade and Project M) actually default with no items.

Today I got really stressed out with this game and I feel like I'm playing a lot worse now. I think I might need a break from this.

So, we can agree that casual gamers won't get much out of Smash fangames?

Even I think so, because fangames tend to include more characters that casuals won't recognize: Chun-Li, Klonoa, Crash Bandicoot, Krystal, Ashley, Bomberman, Mach Rider, Cloud, Chrono, Sora, Black Mage, Lloyd Irving, Ristar, and the four anime characters featured in fangames: Goku, Naruto, Ichigo, and Inu Yasha

I actually disagree with that. It isn't really casual vs competitive, but rather how into Smash bros you are.

I'm not talking about being a casual fan of SSB, I'm talking about casual gamers. I'm also not talking about Casual vs. Competitive. I feel like hardcore gamers are more likely to get something out of fangames.

Ah, I gotcha.

I don't think "hardcore" is the right term to use. Honestly, I think even trying to define a certain group that will enjoy fangames more is kind of impossible. It's one of those things that is entirely up to the individual.

The one thing I can concede is that the people who play video games rarely are less likely to play fangames than people who play video games consistently (even if it's very very little), though that isn't saying much.

Well, there are more casual gamers than there are hardcore, from what I've seen.

Still, casual gamers are unlikely to recognize any of the characters I named a few posts ago. Especially if Ryu's gotten "Who is he?" comments...

[up]Yes. Four of them have their own pages here: Super Smash Flash (a page for both Smash Flash 1 and Smash Flash 2), Project M (a hack of Brawl that makes it play more like Melee. This one requires an SD Card, a copy of Brawl, and either a Wii or a Wii U (use Wii Mode on Wii U)), Super Smash Land (a demake of the first game, styled like it's on the original Game Boy), and Super Smash Bros Crusade.

However, the only one I've played is Super Smash Flash 2. Though I've seen the Super Gaming Bros play Project M and it looks great.

@powerpuffbats: I consider myself to be a casual gamer (in that I'm outright creeped out by the competitive mindset), yet I still knew most of the characters you mentioned. Then again, do "casual" and "hardcore" have any real meaning, any at all?

[up]To each their own. I was more talking about the people who don't play video games too often. Not really a casual vs. competitive thing.

Hardcore players are the ones that try to unlock everything the game has to offer and/or beat anybody else who plays it.

Casual players just play to have fun and stop when they get bored, whether they finish or not.

What else then?

When I was younger I was just a little harder-core than other kids. I wanted to beat everything in a game I could and be the best one in the room. ;p

Then I got older and had less time, so I just play as long as it's fun and move on when I squeeze enough juice out of it.

I consider myself a mixture of both. Hardcore enough to know who a lot of characters are but do get bored and find myself putting down games.

Casual gamers in the context of this conversation are those that don't consider gaming a dedicated hobby and probably don't have many games or consoles. They're more likely to play simpler games (i.e. the mobile market) or those that don't present a huge challenge.
