Wait...did somebody say Little Mac would be one of the least known characters in the game? And Duck Hunt? Somebody might be able to lucky guess Little Mac as guy from Punch Out and the dog doesn't look too different from his 8-bit self, but I don't think you can say the same for Marth, Roy, or the Ice Climbers.

I think the FE lords (sans possibly Roy) are known enough. Not known to the non-gamers but to those that have played Smash Bros (unless they're like one of my former livestream friends and have only played 64).
I would definitely agree on Ice Climbers and Game and Watch not being well-known.
It is difficult to judge popularity as what's popular is different between countries. Like, in Japan, Sonic and Samus aren't too popular. Whereas in America and Europe, they are considerably more popular.
AAAAUUUUGGGHHHH!!!!I dunno. Casual fans probably aren't going to go out and seek those options, especially if it's something like Project M that mostly caters to the competitive side. They're likely content with what they've got and aren't so into it that they seek other games like it, especially if they're not hardcore gamers.note
So, we can agree that casual gamers won't get much out of Smash fangames?
Even I think so, because fangames tend to include more characters that casuals won't recognize: Chun-Li, Klonoa, Crash Bandicoot, Krystal, Ashley, Bomberman, Mach Rider, Cloud, Chrono, Sora, Black Mage, Lloyd Irving, Ristar, and the four anime characters featured in fangames: Goku, Naruto, Ichigo, and Inu Yasha
AAAAUUUUGGGHHHH!!!!Ah, I gotcha.
I don't think "hardcore" is the right term to use. Honestly, I think even trying to define a certain group that will enjoy fangames more is kind of impossible. It's one of those things that is entirely up to the individual.
The one thing I can concede is that the people who play video games rarely are less likely to play fangames than people who play video games consistently (even if it's very very little), though that isn't saying much.

Yes. Four of them have their own pages here: Super Smash Flash (a page for both Smash Flash 1 and Smash Flash 2), Project M (a hack of Brawl that makes it play more like Melee. This one requires an SD Card, a copy of Brawl, and either a Wii or a Wii U (use Wii Mode on Wii U)), Super Smash Land (a demake of the first game, styled like it's on the original Game Boy), and Super Smash Bros Crusade.
However, the only one I've played is Super Smash Flash 2. Though I've seen the Super Gaming Bros play Project M and it looks great.
AAAAUUUUGGGHHHH!!!!Hardcore players are the ones that try to unlock everything the game has to offer and/or beat anybody else who plays it.
Casual players just play to have fun and stop when they get bored, whether they finish or not.

You gotta believe me when I scare you away, all that I wish for is that you would stayWhat else then?
When I was younger I was just a little harder-core than other kids. I wanted to beat everything in a game I could and be the best one in the room. ;p
Then I got older and had less time, so I just play as long as it's fun and move on when I squeeze enough juice out of it.

This is how the Rosalina trailer should have ended
