I do recall him attempting to justify adding his identical daughter instead in that same breath.
If Sakurai's still on board (I have no clue why on earth he would considering he'd probably be Captain Hook at that point), virtually anyone from previous games are significantly likelier to return, regardless of - or perhaps even especially - if they happen to be unremarkable model swaps barely anybody else would miss. We've seen this happen multiple times now in this game alone.

"Tell them to shut up and have some faith in me." - dead flashback guyYeah, the fact that Dr. Mario of all people returned from Melee makes me suspect Lucina and Ow The Edge Pit are likely to stay around too, since as clones they're incredibly easy to implement as long as their base characters stick around.
Makes me wonder why the good doctor was absent from Brawl, since unlike Young Link he didn't have anyone to replace him and unlike Pichu he wasn't a literal joke character.
You cannot firmly grasp the true form of Squidward's technique! I know of the justification. The fact that she disguised herself as Marth in her debut game meant there was a lot of reasons to justify her being made into an alternate costume for Marth. And then she got separated from him because Sakurai could justify making her an easy-to-develop clone character who was practically the beginner's Marth. Take that away, and there is no justification for her to stay in Smash, especially if there's another female FE character around that can be given a unique moveset.
Fantastic Supreme Überkaiser Emperor Folt of The Infinity and Beyond" ... "The First"!Well, Anna became playable in Awakening (and seems to be DLC in Fates), and has appeared in every FE game but Gaiden... I can see her getting some attention in the future, even if just as an AT. Corrin also has decent potential as a character, but FE seems to be resurrecting as a franchise so Fates won't probably be the most recent one by when 5mash comes out.
Yeah, I suspect we'll have another game out- and with it another lord or avatar -by the time SSB 5 rolls around.
You cannot firmly grasp the true form of Squidward's technique! There's always a chance that if Fire Emblem Fates does well, Lucina (Or even Robin, the base class upgrade for the MC DOES get access to tomes and swords) could be replaced with the Player Character of that game.
Who, you have to admit, would at least be a White Haired Swordsman/Woman

I cannot stress enough how much moveset potential Kamui's Dark Prince class has

It's not likely that they'll replace Robin with Kamui: Kamui's abilities are quite different from Robin's and doesn't have the focus on the magic or the strategy that defines Robin's playstyle. There's a reason I see Robin as more of a mage than a swordsman.

No one's gonna replace Lucina. She simply won't appear if they don't have the time to implement her.

Fantastic Supreme Überkaiser Emperor Folt of The Infinity and Beyond" ... "The First"!Because Marth, Ike and Robin/Corrin/a future MU, with Roy as DLC, is good enough. However, if they refrain from cutting off original movesets, I wouldn't really complain about having 2 blue haired lords, a red haired luigified clone, and two MU's with different movesets (as long as they are properly executed) We need more Zelda characters beforehand, tho.

Simple! Then we just need to give every other franchise an overwhelmingly large number of reps too!
But yeah, FE is in a bit of a precarious position in that, like Pokemon, it has a cyclical cast where every new game brings in a bunch of new blood, and it just feels odd not to include someone from the latest cast herd in Smash Bros. But at the same time, Smash Bros. doesn't like to drop characters, so these old outdated guys like Roy and Ike stick around even though their games are no longer relevant, causing their representation to bloat faster than other franchises can keep up.
Mario, Star Fox, and even Legend of Zelda have fairly stagnant character selections aside from the relatively minor characters that get switched out per game, so characters are harder to add from them once you exhaust the main ones.

You cannot firmly grasp the true form of Squidward's technique!Yeah, Robin's way too unique to remove now (Snake doesn't count, he had licensing shenanigans). And honestly I'd be okay with them adding more Pokemon, Mario and Zelda characters (Sceptile, Waluigi and Toon Ganon?) in order to justify another FE roster spot :P
Dopants: He meant what he said and he said what he meant, a Ninety is faithful 100%.Pokemon will have new generations to add from, so there's little sense in looking at our current roster of 721 mons for a new Smash Bros. candidate.
As for Mario, there's a few options left: Waluigi could get a promotion, they could come up with a moveset for Daisy to represent the sports games, or they could finally represent a spinoff with Paper Mario, though that'd be tripling up on Marios.
Legend of Zelda's a bit tricky since they exhausted the series-mainstays. Impa's around every now and then and Hyrule Warriors gave her a few options, though, so she's valid, and on the subject of Hyrule Warriors Lana has tremendous moveset potential but is unlikely as her game will become outdated before long and she's likely partially owned by TK.

You cannot firmly grasp the true form of Squidward's technique! If I could make a prediction...
Dr. Mario will return in Smash 5 largely unchanged. Dark Pit will be "Roy-ified"; his special moves won't be changed, but enough of his regular attacks will be differentiated from vanilla Pit as if to make him a semi-clone. And Lucina will be relegated to an alternate costume for Marth, as she was intended, while a new Fire Emblem representative appears to put complaints about overrepresentation to rest.
I'm not really sure if Lucina is being replaced in this hypothetical scenario.
Call me Willy Whistle 'cause I can't speak, baby. Something in TV Tropes really drove me crazy. Now that I think of it, they'll probably still want to make a new Lucina amiibo (assuming that there won't be alternate costume releases for this game), so they might still keep her in.
Her Smash 5 amiibo will be even scarcer and more sought after than the current figurine, even when the amiibo storm has calmed down by then.

Call me Willy Whistle 'cause I can't speak, baby. Something in TV Tropes really drove me crazy.Daisy would've made a great Peach alt, complete with Toadette neutral B...
Waluigi needs to debut in a non-sports game. A Mario & Luigi RPG with Wario and Waluigi would be neat, a Wario Land-esque game with Wario and Waluigi would be neat...
The guy has a body shape antithesic to generic. Use him Nintendo FFS.
Vaati would be a neat character, as he is a good opposite to Toon Link, and we shouldn't reduce Zelda reps to 2 Links, 2 Zeldas and 2 Ganons. But largely irrelevant as of late.

Dr. Mario is probably one of the easiest options they have for a clone character that would take very little time to implement yet still be significantly different from the usual Mario. Not to mention that he'd keep Mario's old moveset (which I think is more likely to benefit him than benefit Mario right now).
Dark Pit has the biggest potential out of the three Smash 4 clones in terms of getting luigified. On the other hand, he's also another easy option for a clone character that would still have a place in competitive play.
Lucina, who got in because of the justification of people maybe needing a Marth-on-training-wheels before taking the reins of the real deal has perhaps the lowest chance in returning (though it's not impossible). Whether she stays or not (or becomes an alternate costume as was originally intended) will come down to whether the developers think that we still need a Marth-on-training-wheels for the next installations.

No-win situations will always be there. I doubt they'll be faced much by such a scenario if it happens.

Fantastic Supreme Überkaiser Emperor Folt of The Infinity and Beyond" ... "The First"!

I wasted my vote on Snake, so if he got in by some miracle I don't expect much difference from his Brawl self; wonky hitboxes and an odd amount of power in his tilts. :P
