Yeah, this is all post-release stuff. Sakurai made sure to emphasize that DLC wasn't even being planned until after Smash 3D was out. When Mewtwo was first announced, they hadn't even begun programming him yet. That's why he was only able to show a render.
This person was talking about Mewtwo specifically.
Oh Nintendo was definitely planning DLC long before Smash 3DS came out. Negotiations (especially Ryu) take time, there was a hidden eshop link in Smash 3DS, they had been doing DLC for years already, and Smash is an obvious DLC goldmine. They just didn't say so for awhile for PR purposes.
Which isn't saying that they held anything back from the main game. I can believe that work on Mewtwo didn't start until after Smash 3DS was announced. But Mewtwo and Ryu were definitely being planned for DLC for awhile. And stages/costumes were always happening.
Uhm, No. Sakurai even stated he had no plans for DLC. And he doesn't exactly have a history of being dishonest for PR purposes (even going as far as calling people who buy DLC dumb for doing so).
The initial roster leak would have contained some word on Ryu, Mewtwo, Roy, Lucas, and the stages, if they really had been planned from the beginning. The guy didn't hide anything, even stating which characters were considered but dropped.
Plus, Capcom and Nintendo are really getting along right now. Negotiations would go really quickly.

Cut to April, where costumes and Lucas are revealed before Mewtwo was released.

I actually have a friend who told me he wasn't planning on getting DLC for Smash (or Mario Kart 8) because of Capcom's controversial DLC tactics. He must have thought that's what all video game companies do. When I told him that Nintendo did DLC differently, he still seemed skeptical.

I concur. I still haven't bought any DLC for my 3DS version (the fact that my brothers have the character DLC on the Wii U version hasn't really affected me, as I don't really play the DLC characters all that often).
I may be getting some of the Mii Fighter costumes at some point though (especially since the Gunner's kind of surpassed Mega Man as my "ranged Smasher" main at the moment).
Yeah, Capcom set a bad precedent, so I'm not surprised that people are still skeptical on DLC in any form.

I mean, if you want to believe they were debating on whether to get more easy money from Smash DLC until say, January 2015, I can't prove that they didn't decide on it until then. But there was that hidden eshop link in Smash 3DS, and there was an awful lot of DLC coming out all at once.
Now I don't have a problem with how Smash did DLC. It's generally competitive with other fighting game DLC prices, and it's decent quality aside from the lack of custom moves. But PR is meant to provide a certain image, and Nintendo is committed to the image of good DLC (which they have done for the most part), so they wanted to avoid any implications that they were holding something back from the main game. It's why I was not surprised when any of the DLC was announced.
I actually had to explain to my livejournal friend that the prices for all the characters (barring Ryu, but he comes with a stage) is actually similar in pricing to Injustice's DLC. She wasn't used to it because she doesn't really play fighting games outside of Smash. She did buy Mewtwo (she says she has no need for 3DS version) when he came out, though.
Though, Capcom set a bad example for DLC.

AAAAUUUUGGGHHHH!!!!The guy officially claiming that each SSB character takes at least a year to create, only to later dump out four of them within the span of half of one (that is of course taking his rear-shielding statement that Mewtwo did in fact start development after one of 4's releases at skin-contact face value), does not in fact have a history of lying for PR purposes.
really I could go on all day with this one
"Tell them to shut up and have some faith in me." - dead flashback guyI have no doubt that you could.
Please don't.
Of course, if that were the case, and taken literally and not in terms of collective man-hours or some other office term, we'd be waiting for Smash 4 until at least sometime in the late 2020s

I have a message from another time...Obviously they aren't investing their entire team on one character for a prolonged period of time for every last slot (and in that case it would be downright absurd to say they would require a whole year in each instance with that much coordination anyway).
The point remains that he's openly contradicted his own words four times in a row in just these past few months, at least two of which not even being debatable. Continuing to pretend as though he's still Jesus Bunny Claus when he is outright known for this PR-purposes-based nonsense would also fall safely within the lines of "downright absurd".

These are games that have day-one patches, and actually do give content that should have been part of the game, as it was already developed.
