You cannot firmly grasp the true form of Squidward's technique!The developers must have been in a sticky situation because they had to reveal most of the newcomers before release (since the budget that went to cutscenes was used for the newcomer trailers). Thus, those newcomers had to become starters. However, most of them, such as Robin and Greninja, come from existing universes, so they ended up getting lumped in with familiar starter characters like Marth and Pikachu.
If they were going to make the unlock methods so underwhelming, they should have at least made everyone available from the start in the Wii U version as originally intended. (For instance, it was weird when Gamer became a default stage and Ashley became an Assist Trophy while you still had to unlock Wario himself.) Unlocking a good chunk of a 50+ character roster would take a lot of time, I'd imagine, so why lock so little of them in the first place?
Call me Willy Whistle 'cause I can't speak, baby. Something in TV Tropes really drove me crazy. Brawl was rated T for crude humor (among other things), so maybe they locked away Wario to preserve an E10+ rating?
It was most likely done because they'd already promoted Luigi as a starter character.
Call me Willy Whistle 'cause I can't speak, baby. Something in TV Tropes really drove me crazy.That doesn't mean anything- The ESRB, CERO and all the rest will give the same rating for something in a game regardless on if it's hidden or not. It's why the ESRB gives Shin Megami Tensei games a T rating unless they feature Mara.
I sure said that!Wario definitely had more prominence in Brawl when he was one of the first new characters introduced. Everyone knew of that ultra-lethal fart attack of his. In 4, he plays more of a backseat role among 54 other characters, and he doesn't even appear in the Wii U intro or any of the trailers.
Regardless, Wario is definitely the worst kept secret in the Smash series.

Wario's lack of coverage is because of his "unlockable" status, not just in addition to it.
Which is more than Meta Knight and co. can say, at any rate.
"Tell them to shut up and have some faith in me." - dead flashback guySakurai's sentiments towards the bonus features is nice, but it just doesn't hold up - there'll be people who won't like the features, and won't enjoy playing through those features just simply because there's something to do towards 'completing' the game, like all the Challenges in Smash Run.
These people will go through the modes they don't like, or do the challenges they don't enjoy, simply because they want to complete the game's 'checklist' of challenges.

It wasn't in Melee's timeframe, but Brawl came out far later than, say, Shadow The Hedgehog.

And poor Ganon.
I didn't know PM had exclusive music. That Super Mario World Castle remix sounded pretty good.

I know, but the description made me believe it was specifically made to fit with PM's Bowser's Castle stage. I found the original song though.
@77897: The track on Hanenbow
WAS composed specifically for PM and is included with every install.

To some extent, I think the initial disappointment in the rosters of Brawl and Smash 4 come down to how front-loaded they were- Almost all of the newcomers are unlocked from the start. In Brawl, Lucario and R.O.B. are the only newcomers that are both unlockable and not built like previous characters, and Bowser Jr. and Duck Hunt are the only totally-unique newcomers in Smash 4- And Jr.'s unlocked from the start in for Wii U.
I sure said that!
