Because custom moves are actually fun.

De Romanīs, lingua Latina gloriosa non fuī.The long and short of it is that you only need each custom move once, whereas most equipment pieces are ever-so-slightly different from each other. Once you've got Fire Orb or Screw Rush or whatever you've got it for good, but equipment can be sold or feed to FPs and you can always be on the hunt for better ones- One Max-Power Gloves piece could well be twenty points ahead of another.
I sure said that! But it's possible to get custom moves more than once.

Shut up, Full Moon; you don't know shit! You're brilliant!
Call me Willy Whistle 'cause I can't speak, baby. Something in TV Tropes really drove me crazy.I keep ending up fighting the absolute WORST this game has to offer. Not as in their ability to play, but the worst in how they behaved. Most of them are Ness players who spam PK Fire and back-throw. Every one of these players I've fought have been the kind of person that taunts as soon as you're knocked off the stage and when they run out of taunts, they crouch repeatedly in place of them. Then some of these people pick the character you just used and tries to play even better than you. I haven't fought a single person that isn't like this or just simple at a godlike level of play compared to mine. I haven't fought a single all around decent player in With Anyone.

"Tell them to shut up and have some faith in me." - dead flashback guyMrgh. Just got off a bunch of matches from a guy that went Link to Fox to Pikachu.
I was winning a majority of them with Lucas and Falco, but he just kept my Lucas completely out of reach and edge guarded me hard. And he just kept going with the Thunder Jolt the moment I switched off Lucas and HMMMMMMGH.
A connection before that I learned they added a quick "Watch out!" to Dark Pit's forward tilt. That was kinda funny to hear.
Watchin' your matches, Full Moon... Yooooo that was a clean as hell first match, dude.

mario is red, i am green, i try my best, but everyone's mean

I believe the ones unlocked through challenges give that equipment and allow them to be random drops as well. Don't quote me on that though.
