Megamen is a very close competitor, though.

Who is your favorite third part character in the series?
De Romanīs, lingua Latina gloriosa non fuī.Super Diffusion Beam is pretty fun, as are the nearly-identical Blue Falcon and Zapper Posse.
It makes me kinda sad that Ryu's Shinku Hadoken in Smash 4 is the not-all-that-great fireball version instead of the laser beam from the Vs. Capcom games.

I sure said that! What about the Koopalings, who debuted in Super Mario Bros. 3?
(To answer the question seriously, my fav third-party is, or rather, was, Snake. I just felt like he brought the most to the table, even if Sonic is more directly relevant.)
"It's liberating, realizing you never need to be competent." — Ultimatepheer1. Mega Man
2. Ryu
3. Pac-Man
4. Sonic
5. Snake
Sonic is even more of a pain to fight against, if you ask me. If you're asking for a fast-paced battle, you won't get one.

Call me Willy Whistle 'cause I can't speak, baby. Something in TV Tropes really drove me crazy. That said, Sonic definitely deserves his spot on the roster the most out of all the third-parties, considering the direct and significant impact he's had on Nintendo's history.
And if you ask me, Mega Man's MUCH more annoying to play against. Metal Blade, Crash Bomb, roll roll roll, rinse and repeat...
Oh, man, I'm not bashing Sonic's inclusion in Smash, just the specifics thereof- I can see why he was like the way he was in Brawl, but after the recovery from '06 that started in the better half of Unleashed, including a renewed emphasis on a sense of speed, it feels odd for Sonic not to have the Boost, at the least.
I sure said that!Hey, atleast you can emulate the Boost with a Speed Crasher badge?
Unless it's named something different in your region...
The whole "run into people to damage them" one.
But anyhow, I do wish Sonic had some more variety than just "different spin attacks"
I mean, yes, spinning is his main thing, but there are a few other things somewhere in the main series you could draw a few moves from, right?
I dunno, I think it would had been cool if the Homing Attack would had done the multiple target bashing thing, either with timed presses of B all Adventure/Unleashed/"Modern Sanik" style, or do the whole Lost World thing of lock-on and super speed bashing. Sure it'd be pointless in 1v1, but fun in teams or free for alls.

I'm sure Sega is very much invested in representing the fact that Sonic had more than one way to trigger a Spin Dash in a handful of decades-old games.
I'd like to think that Sakurai's fumbled over his own statements far enough that we no longer have to take his PR bait at face value.

"Tell them to shut up and have some faith in me." - dead flashback guySakurai himself noted how much attention they were investing in revamping him during the Charizard direct.

It's weird how a move like F.L.U.D.D. can be useful against an opponent with multiple jumps.
I don't usually have items on, but off the top of my head I like Roy's, Yoshi's, Luigi's, Wario's, Bowser's, and Kirby's Final Smashes.
