@Strawberry: The Great Fox was included. It tried to shoot lasers at the Halberd, but was dwarfed by it and crushed against the mountain.

I'm not about to argue that Sakurai doesn't tend towards using the characters he's more involved with at all, but I don't buy the idea that he deliberately goes out of his way to put his favorites on a pedestal.

[up] The point was that the Great Fox wouldn't work as a stage the way the Halberd does.

Though by all rights it probably should- The Great Fox is tiny in Smash.

It's bigger in its own games, but even then I think it's pretty small compared to the Halberd.

I still don't get why Bowser's the only one who used his army in Subspace, yet neither Ganondorf nor Ridley used their army/The Space Pirates.

You would think the Halberd would be much smaller. Since, y'know, Kirby's as tall as a quarter. (Or was it Olimar?)

Kirby's 8 inches tall.

Olimar's a quarter.

[up][up][up][up]Because if you know anything about the space pirates, then you'd know all they would end up doing is accidentally giving all the R.O.B.s the ability to turn in to half-sized balls that could annihilate the entire subspace army.

It's a sad day for evil when Bowser's army is not being the one that has the most vapor for brains.

On the other hand, Bowser and his army can be surprisingly, and frighteningly effective all the same.

Bowser's competence is like a lightswitch- Either he's a diabolical mastermind or a hapless buffoon.

Still, though, he's persistent, and he's not a jerk to his minions, either. As much as he's THE video game bad guy, he's actually pretty atypical in some respects.

I sure said that!

It's funny because ROB is technically the Subspace Emissary, so the story mode was really all about him. tongue

And I like Bowser. As a character, as an enemy, and as a fighter. As a character he looks cool and he IS usually pretty nice to his minions, as an enemy he always offers a nice challenge, and as a fighter he's got some strong attacks, even if against higher level opponents I tend to miss a lot...

I tend to do the best as the villains, especially Bowser, Ganondorf, and (sort of) Wario.

Sakurai was absolutely, undeniably biased in the way he balanced characters back when he was basically the sole person in charge of that. Now whether the degree of his bias is greater than the general human average, that's probably impossible to tell.

(... since I'm going to bed now and I don't want everyone to jump down my throat while I'm trying to get some shut-eye, a clarification: Everyone has certain underlying biases in how they perceive the world and make decisions. When Sakurai made creative decisions, something inside him made some ideas seem better than others. And there's so much evidence throughout the whole series of certain entirely evident tendencies that it's completely ridiculous to argue that he was not biased at all. That doesn't mean I think he intentionally screwed things in his favor, it just means I think an auteur needs an editor or two when it comes to delicate subjects like balance or respectful treatment of intellectual properties.)

[up] I like Bowser, too. He's one of my secondary characters. (He would be one of my mains if I didn't play with the Villager, Lucario, Mewtwo, and Yoshi so much!) I can do pretty well with Wario, as well.

I find it a bit off-putting that Bowser still doesn't have his voice from the Mario games. It made more sense in Melee and Brawl when he was given a primal stance and was designed like a typical monster, but in 4 it sounds out of place now that he looks more like he does in his home series.

Were they planning to give Bowser Jr. realistic grunts and roars, too?

The way I see it is that the sounds Bowser makes are basically his equivalent to a human grunting. Bowser Jr. just doesn't do it because he's a bit less serious than his dad.

Bowser sorta has two voiceboxes, too- He's just as likely to roar at you in a Mario game as talk with a human-voice-with-extra-reverb. Depends on how angry he gets, I guess?
