The key component is that Splatoon hasn't been out yet, while most Smashers have some sort of legacy to them.
The buzz and hype for it is huge, but Smash is generally a masturbatory celebration of the best of Ninty's line-up, and the legacies they left behind.

And a hole has been poked on that argument. Though the 12 or so people who did manage to get a copy of the damn thing loved the shit out of it, and now everyone loves it, with the magic of digital distribution.

"Curry killed the pussy hoping that I could kill the hate in you" - Curry, D. "TABOO | TA13OO." TA13OO, PH, 2018Honestly, we can speculate with what's said in interviews and and general logic until we're all blue in the face, but in the end, the choices will most likely be at Sakurai's discretion so anything that's video game character is possible.
Heck, Roy's game wasn't released until after Melee, so even if it's a character we don't want, we can't count the possibility out until it's all said and done, no?
Roy was a clone of a character and part of an already popular franchise. He isn't comparable to a character whose franchise has not been playable to the general public at all yet.
As for Xenoblade, it was a critical darling, and they were impressed with the western sales. Still didn't do much, but the existence of Xenoblade 3D and X show that Nintendo cares about the franchise and wants it to grow. I personally suspect Shulk was one of the mandated characters that had to be put in.

To be fair, FE wasn't an unknown property by then; it was already pretty well-loved by the gaming crowd in Jap-
Curses, you beat me to it.

TA13OO, PH, 2018Also, MONOLITH needed a bone thrown to 'em- After all, Nintendo's the first parent company they've had that hasn't hassled them to some degree or another, so may as well celebrate the company that makes weird plot twister games with Xeno- or Kaitos in the title, especially since Smash 4 was developed in tandem with Namco, who own a good chunk of their back catalog- It got us the remix of The valedictorian elegy, at least.

I sure said that!I've been thinking, if the Inklings do make appearances as DLC Smashers they could end up being another first for a kind of fighter in the series (this game has quite a few of those) - one whose primary ability is modifying the environment to strengthen themselves.
I was thinking the Inkling's ink would stick to the floor, walls or obstacles on the stage. They would have light and have lower damage output than most characters, but could have a special, much faster dash on painted surfaces which would include being able to run up walls, and some other buffs when standing on painted surfaces. Enemies could also be tagged with paint, giving Inkling attacks more damage against them or in some cases special properties (for example, just doing the special dash on an inked floor into an inked enemy could do damage and knockback). Most of their specials could spread paint in various ways, and maybe the Down B could change weapons a la the Monado (some do more damage, some spread paint better).
So you get a character who is so-so normally but becomes much more effective if the player knows how to use the paint mechanic correctly.

Yoshi's kind of in the same spot as Fire Emblem, actually. The Yoshi series might be indistinguishable from the Mario series or not be as well known, but I still think it's more known than Splatoon or even Xenoblade Chronicles.
Yoshi's in a weird spot, and perhaps moreover has always been in a bit of a weird spot, in how divorced (or not) it is from the "main" Mario Bros series. DK and Wario are both decidedly more on their own.
And yeah, I get the feeling the Wooly World stage was made in anticipation of a much earlier release than game eventually had, so I'd not draw too much from that.
I sure said that!So fun fact speaking of Monolith Soft, apparently they did some work on Brawl towards the end of its development (around the time Nintendo would have acquired them). Which makes it kinda weird they had no involvement with Wii U/3DS besides allowing Xenoblade IP in the game.

This is why it's important to style corporate names as considered standard for them. It's also why I always write those really odd devs under Nintendo's wing as skip or skip ltd.
Didn't one of their composers help, at least? Or am I remembering wrong?
Then again, between part-timing with EAD for the new Zelda game and Xenoblade X, you can't say they haven't been busy.
I sure said that!Well, Greninja's D-Tilt won't kill, but what comes out of it certainly does
.
I need to keep in mind that sometimes walking is better than running. D-Tilt combined with Greninja's really fast walk speed is so good.
Got some more amiibos...
But horror! Sonic is Japanese! His box does not fit in with the rest!
He is differentttt...
...the Internet is telling me that he'll play on an American system same as the rest, but my uniformity has been ruined. X| I'm tempted to mail it back and order an English one.
You gotta believe me when I scare you away, all that I wish for is that you would stay

Inkling will not be be in Smash 4 as a playable character. The DLC characters have probably been mostly decided, with a couple spots left open for whoever is popular and reasonable. Splatoon is too new to get a spot in Smash, and unless Sakurai is forced to add them (unlikely seeing how much control he has), he won't put them in until after they've earned their place. And of course, Smash 5 needs its new characters, and Inkling will be the perfect frontliner for that, like Villager was.
Now a Splatoon stage I could see. Easy to add, and standards are much lower overall.
