... That's kinda off-topic, but now I'm curious. Were you already aware of people called Ketchum before learning Ash's name? I personally got the joke immediately because the name sounded ridiculous to me and I thought they were really stretching themselves for it, and I was surprised to learn years down the line that it's actually an existing name. It's not a terrible shame not to get a pun like that if you never stop to actually think about it, really, which would be the case if you could just accept it as a name like any other from the get-go. Or if, say, you're relatively young and got into Pokemon when "gotta catch 'em all" wasn't the official slogan anymore. Or for any other reason, really - brainfarts happen sometimes.
(A girl at university told me that one time she thought her vaccuum cleaner was broken because it wasn't vaccuuming very well anymore, but it couldn't possibly be that she had to change the dust bag, because it was one of those that don't need any. It only occurred to her eventually that "I don't have to change the bag" is only technically true.)

Hey, it took me years to get the Paul Bearer pun (but then again, I wasn't going to funerals as a kid). Some just take a while.
Honestly, a lot of the Project M alts were great, and it's a shame that Sm4sh didn't do it.
Dr Mario should be a Mario alt, and Dark Pit should be a Pit alt, but I've made my thoughts clear on that back in this wishlist post

Back when we didn't know what the new alts for some characters would be, I was hoping for Shiny Lucario and White Yoshi. Neither of that happened, obviously.
Also, I always use Classic Wario if I ever play as him.
"I'm glad I don't wear shoes or else I'd have to always get shoes in two different sizes. ...If you know, you know!"@Tro Partner: Goddammit.
Dopants: He meant what he said and he said what he meant, a Ninety is faithful 100%.Gotta disagree heavily with you there. In fact, Male Robin is the main Robin and Female Robin is an alt.
I disagree.
In terms of alts I want, I can't think of anything, which means I'm rather satisified... though if the Ryu rumor turns out to be true, I want to have Ken as an alt for him.
Fantastic Supreme Überkaiser Emperor Folt of The Infinity and Beyond" ... "The First"!I'm not deluding myself, I'm having an opinion. One that happens to not coincide with the opinions of the game's makers, yes, but not any less valid of an opinion.
Unless you thought I meant that literally. You didn't think I meant that literally, did you? I mean, I'm not that stupid. I can see male Robin on the character select screen.
"We're home, Chewie."... Okay, now I'm actually annoyed.
They had to make one of the two the default because that's how this works, and the default was "male" because that's how cultural norms work, but saying that the female is just an alt is... possibly correct by the technical definition, but insisting on it, in response to an obviously joking post, is just douchey in a rather petty way. Like, really now. The post said that "female Robin is the only Robin in Smash", that's not something you need to "disagree heavily" with, it's obviously not the only one, it was an exaggeration for fun, why do you hate fun?
I've said before that I've never played Awakening, or any Fire Emblem game. But if the game's many paths seem to have no bias towards either gender, which I assume is the case, then this would make sense. I think Sakurai maybe could've represented it better by putting both versions on the portrait.

It's wrong to begin with. That alone makes it less valid than the opposite (though saying that Female Robin clearly has no presence in Smash is also objectively wrong in my opinion as her very inclusion as an alt means she is important enough to be a playable option; just not as important as Male Robin).
... Now you've made me take this seriously.
I'm afraid there's evidence in-game that point to Female Robin being less important than Male Robin in terms of Smash, whether by trophy, amiibo, official art, and other stuff I've noticed in regards to the two (and which actually counts for the other two gender-choice characters as well).
Fantastic Supreme Überkaiser Emperor Folt of The Infinity and Beyond" ... "The First"!
THIS.
And as for characters returning to being alts again, what's wrong with that? If it means more and more varied characters to play as, I'm fine with Dr. Mario not having his own slot. Especially if they just do what they did with Male/Female robin, and have them share a slot but have their own voice clips and models.
Take this (serious suggestion that I just now thought of and would really like) for example: Make Toon Link an alt for Regular Link. Then, add Mask (Young) Link to the game. And if someone liked having 8 colors for Toon or Regular Link, or liked having the minor moveset variations, they don't need to disappear. It's just condensing them to one character slot.

I don't know where I'd find it again, but I saw an article (that might have been linked earlier in the thread) that said they made Lucina separate from Marth was because they didn't want the mechanic change messing with the records, Dr Mario and Dark Pit probably had similar reasoning behind it and I doubt they'd merge Link with Young Link for the same reason.
Nothing against the sane ones. The delusional ones however make me want to puke.
Dr. Mario's inclusion had nothing to do with if we'd potentially get a cast of more varied characters. Same with the other two. In fact, I'd claim that, as contradictory as it sounds, taking away Dr. Mario and the other two and making them alts (and this goes for Lucina as well, no matter how inferior they make her) would in fact hurt character variety.
I'm afraid doing it like that AND keeping the minor alterations of moveset clones would heavily skew the statistics in a way that means that the information you could glean from these statistics in any way (whether casual or competitive) would be inaccurate at best. I'd also be a nightmare in terms of creating custom moves and keeping them separate from each "alt". Also, Toon Link is perfectly deserving of his own roster spot.
Or just read
which adresses it better than I ever could.

Hmm. Well, that seems like a decent reason for them, but in my world it's not that huge. I mean, I don't need the whole world knowing "those Mario battles were mostly fought at Dr. Mario"! if it means leaving space to also play as someone else (which in my dream world it would).

I just realized the pun behind "Ash Ketchum".
I am a huge idiot sometimes. -_-'
