Dear God, I just underwent the most frustrating thing I've ever experienced in Smash Brothers.
FOR GLORY.
And not to be pretentious, but it's not because I lack skill. I've gone to multiple high-level tournaments in my area and I've done well. What I don't get is how people manage to play so well when every input is about 3 seconds delayed. It's frustrating to be unable to shield or tech correctly because my shield comes out too late, leaving my opponent to assume that I'm incompetent with the game. Ugh, rant over I guess. At least I know I'm good at the game. I'll stick to playing locally. \rant
TLDR; If you wanna play online, PLEASE have a decent web connection. :/

I'm the guy who knows how to make games but doesn't. 3DS FC: 2878-9776-7579How good's your connection, and with how many people did you play?
I play from Chile, and I tend to get very manageable input delay when playing with people from all over, even Japan, save for the occassional odd dude with a potato connection.
"Yeah, it's a shame. Here we are in an underground cave with all these lasers, and instead of having a rave we're using it for evil."
My connection is fine, my Wii U is directly wired. I played about 5 people until I decided it was unbearable, 2 of which were from Japan. The rest I could only assume were from the USA due to the names. Either I got very unlucky with the connections or the servers are just bad around here in the Midwest.
The thing that confuses me the most is: why does MK 8 not lag with TWELVE people, but Smash lags with two?
EDIT: I'm also really sorry if my aggression made anybody uncomfortable. I just get quite a bit frustrated when things like this happen in fighting games. :/

I'm the guy who knows how to make games but doesn't. 3DS FC: 2878-9776-7579Mario Kart does lag. It's fairly obvious with the weird ways items hit, or look like they've hit, when playing online.
The thing is, in Mario Kart the game puts priority on the player. Even if other players have potato connection, you can still race just as well. Other racers will move around erratically, but that doesn't really stop your ability of moving through a racetrack.
On Smash, on the other hand, is essential that everyone involved is seeing the same screen on all ends. You can't have a fighting game where one of the players is having an epileptic attack all over the arena. This means that if someone with problems with their connection joins a game, every player has to pay for it in order to let everyone see the same things at the same time.
"Yeah, it's a shame. Here we are in an underground cave with all these lasers, and instead of having a rave we're using it for evil."
That's extremely odd, because I've never seen any lag online in MK, visual or otherwise. :O You are right about the focus the game puts on the player though, good point.
Of course with Brawl, the online was UNPLAYABLE, but I had heard prior that Sm4sh was better. Plus my experiences online With Friends were extremely smooth.

There's a handful of odd compensations Mario Kart does to make it not as obvious.
Have you ever seen an shell hit someone up in the air, yet they continued moving around like it ain't no thing? That's a problem caused by your console first saying "Yup, dude got smacked, alright", but said someone's console saying "Phew... Too close!"
If you can get smooth games with friends, maybe it really is just a problem of you having bad luck. I can play all modes, even with 4 players, and can get very smooth experiences as long as no one with a bad connection joins in.
Again, I can confirm as a Chilean.

"Yeah, it's a shame. Here we are in an underground cave with all these lasers, and instead of having a rave we're using it for evil."Yeah, at this point I can see what's going on (for the most part). Thanks for all of the different viewpoints everyone, I honestly just typed up that rant to vent some frustration. Glad to see there is one reasonable part of the internet. :D
I'm the guy who knows how to make games but doesn't. 3DS FC: 2878-9776-7579Here's the thing about online games: all of them lag in some way or another. Some just have better ways of hiding it than others. It's a lot harder to do that with fighting games due to the amount of inputs you have to do every second or so. The closest type of netcode that can result in little lag without having inherent input lag like games such as Tekken and ASW games have is rollback netcode, AKA GGPO, and even that has issues sometimes.

I'd say so. Japanese R.O.B.'s would still be referred to as "R.O.B." for us, as opposed to "Robot."
I rather hated how Gordo Throw was so buffed from Waddle Dee Toss. In Brawl the Waddle Dees barely hurt at all and vanished after they landed. In 4 the Gordos bounce around almost erratically and last several seconds, letting anybody be able to beat them back at you.

Genius.
Last night I could have sworn I had the crowning moment of my Smash-playing career. I had this 3DS For Glory Mario mirror match where I launched my opponent off the stage, jumped and used F.L.U.D.D. as he Super Jump Punched to recover (he was close enough to be able to grab the ledge, especially given Smash 4's magnetic ledges), and then, about an inch away from the edge of omega!Magicant, used Mario's Fair and spiked him into the bottom blast line.
I'm not usually that great at Smash, so I'm pretty sure that was dumb luck on my part.
Call me Willy Whistle 'cause I can't speak, baby. Something in TV Tropes really drove me crazy.![]()

The Dees and Doos always lingered about once they were thrown. They only disappeared if they were attacked, left alone for too long, or Triple D just happened to be spamming them.
As for "barely hurt":

"Tell them to shut up and have some faith in me." - dead flashback guy

As a psychic Pokemon, Mewtwo doesn't need to be in the general vicinity to telekinetically wreck his opponents. He doesn't even need to be on the stage.
He could be planning to sent us all flying into the sky at this very moment.
