That list is so full of absolutely atrocious choices it's not even funny. (EDIT: Referring to the "Viable Contenders List", though obviously true for the other one, too.)
Why do people insist on making every minor creature that ever appeared in a Mario game or vaguely Mario-related game playable anyway?
We also have enough Pokemon. And enough Kirby and Kid Icarus and even Zelda characters. And with Wolf likely returning, more than enough Star Fox.

I'm not too surprised of Shovel Knight's popularity. He got hyped up a lot, Shovel Knight got named Indie Game of 2014 and the game still has upcoming free DLC coming over and is generating hype with getting ported to other systems.
I'm wondering if I should vote for him. It could secure a character I like to be noticed, but I could also use my vote to help somebody who needs it more.
Three isn't much at all. But still a comfortable amount if there wasn't any clonelyness going on. No hate on clones or anything, but can't really count them as a "proper" roster slot since they aren't different enough to me. Of course, clones are fine with having slightly different properties, but I'd like to see three characters from the same series being more diverse than Fox and Falco being so similar.
Ohh, Crystal would be a good one to vote for! Just grab all the staff moves and then some more from Starfox Adventures and give them to her!

Krystal would be the most different since, as you said, she could be given her staff (that Fox stole) from Adventures.
Falco's main difference is that he jumps higher, has some variants of Fox's base specials (namely Blaster and Reflector), his Landmaster lasts longest (and hovers in the air better), and his A-attacks are different.

AAAAUUUUGGGHHHH!!!!Three characters is a lot for a franchise that's only really famous for one installment and has since only been desperately trying to recapture that success. Most of all, though, I'm concerned about what they actually add. I won't call them "clones". It's not about movesets. But I think the roster has enough tiny animal people in space pilot uniforms with laser guns. Give me more different franchises. Give me more personality.
But yeah, as much as I like Zelda, I'd still much rather see more of franchises that aren't as well-represented yet. And I love Midna, but it'd be strange to have her as a one-off character right next to the timeless existing characters who are all wielders of the Triforce.
Say, y'know what'd be nice? If the Ice Climbers still absolutely positively can't be included, I'd like to see Alice. Sakurai's already done a lot of melding between Balloon Fight and Ice Climber, so it sorta-kinda-almost would be like having an Ice Climber rep.
Or maybe I'm talking nonsense and the sleep dep's been getting to me
I sure said that!To be fair, a lot of people probably don't know why they aren't in.
I expect a 3 page hand written apology letter by tomorrow morning.

To be fair, the only reason the Ice Climbers aren't in is because there were issues getting them to work on the 3DS. In the hypothetical scenario where said issues get fixed, then the Ice Climbers could just be thrown back in.
Not likely, of course, but ya know.
Also, I know Fox and Falco and Wolf aren't "clones" but for the love of God give them different Final Smashes. Do we really need 3 different Landmasters?
Yeah.

So, for Shovelry, or for Furry Krystal...?
There ya go.

Moved handles because mehThe fact that the Viable Contenders List spells Magikoopa as "Magi-Koopa" triggers me.
Also, Doshin is from Doshin The Giant. You 'muricans don't know about him because it wasn't released in 'murica.

"I like girls, but now, it's about justice."Do you enjoy 2D action platformers? It's kind of like a Megaman game, but not as punishing. At first.
There are worse things to spend 10€ on out there. Like a good chunk of the "never heard of this" e-shop titles.

I mean, those are just examples to show how weird it is to judge characters by movesets. I mean are the final smashes really the thing that matters here?
... Okay, I have to admit I'm kind of confusing myself here, but the point I'm trying to make is that a silly character with a shovel and bravado from a series with a unique style and personality is always and forever preferable to a character who is in some arbitrary ways possibly a little different from the similar characters that are already there.
So, checking some stuff, and I found a vid on Youtube that linked to this: An early results pie graph from Japan
Key thing I took away from this: K. Rool's dominating both East and West.
The Inklings are actually at the lowest end of that chart.
Also just ran into this
, and damn is 3rd party support kicking up.

I'm amazed Shovel Knight is so ahead of everyone else though.
I see what you did there.
