Do you guys think a hypothetical patch relegating Dr. Mario, Dark Pit, and Lucina to the alternate costumes they were initially going to be would sit well with the fans?
Call me Willy Whistle 'cause I can't speak, baby. Something in TV Tropes really drove me crazy.Well, here they won't be axed per se; they'll just share character slots with Mario, Pit, and Marth, their respective parent characters.
It certainly wouldn't sit well with people who main the clones—especially myself, since I play as both vanilla Mario and Dr. Mario—but there may be a Vocal Minority of sorts who might find them better off as mere Palette Swaps.
Call me Willy Whistle 'cause I can't speak, baby. Something in TV Tropes really drove me crazy.I wouldn't be happy about that. Outside of my main three (soon to be four) Dr. Mario is one of the only other characters I'm actually competent with.
Call me butter, because I am on a roll! 3ds friend code: 5258-0885-3903 Wii U: Bowser CharizardBut it would just be so...utterly pointless. Like, it would literally just be a minor change to the character selection interface. What would it accomplish?
"We're home, Chewie."It's a reference to a Sakurai interview that both addresses it and establishes why you shouldn't get your hopes up.

The idea seems to be that the character 'changes' would still exist, but they just wouldn't take up any more space on the screen.
Even as someone who doesn't care for them at best, though, I can't see that being taken as anything other than random mean-spirited-ness. Which is already there to begin with considering the Clone Corner, but still.

x4 Using Dr. Tornado is a lot of fun, and its high priority definitely helps. Lackluster recovery notwithstanding, I love the fact that Dr. Mario in this game is basically what he was intended to be in Melee—a slower, stronger Mario.

If the DYKG video on Smash done by Xander Mobus is any indication, Sakurai actually needed to separate them so Dr. Mario could use his Megavitamins, Dark Pit would have his Electroshock Arm, and Lucina, unlike Marth, wouldn't have a tipper sweetspot. Not separating them would cause them to have the exact same moves as the original fighters.

I've never really had a problem with his recovery unless any other character would also fallen short. He's also useful for being almost immune to projectile edgeguarding since he can grab the edge while using Side B. And the fact that it doesn't stop his momentum means that you're probably going to reflect any projectile aimed at you.

On the other hand, the different properties carries over to their custom specials as well (even if they're more-or-less the same customs as the originals anyways). Best seen with Dr. Mario's neutral, side, and down special customs.

Fantastic Supreme Überkaiser Emperor Folt of The Infinity and Beyond" ... "The First"!Couldn't we just have the gameplay differences with the alternate costumes? After all, in Brawl, ZSS was actually selectable right from the start of the match, and Nintendo didn't have any problem pointing out all eight koopalings, seeing that Bowser Jr.'s name changes accordingly.

1- Zero Suit Samus was a (strangely working) transformation character like Zelda and Shiek. Not an alt costume.
2- You can't have alternate costume have gameplay differences of any kind with its original costume. Bowser Jr./The Koopalings and Olimar/Alph are completely identical. That's not the case for Dr. Mario, Lucina, and Pittoo.
"Yeah, it's a shame. Here we are in an underground cave with all these lasers, and instead of having a rave we're using it for evil."![]()
Basically
. Alph and the Koopalings (and the Villager, Wii Fit Trainer, and Robin's genderswaps) play exactly the same, while the "clones" all have at least one difference from their parent (though it might not mean that they actually play different or might even be inferior, it means that they have something that differs from their parent character all the same).
I mean, I'd not be opposed to implementing those characters as alternate costumes in the virtually-inevitable next game, but absolutely not in Smash 4 patches. That's just not a good plan. Once the cat's outta the bag, it's not really feasible to put it back in.
