Have you guys been in any SSB tournament?
I can't say I have...not a convenient tournament location near where I live.
That said, I have played 64 and Melee at my vocational school. This Mario player in 64 kicked the asses of the four of us that actually played it. We got most of the class to play Melee, though.
AAAAUUUUGGGHHHH!!!!Really?
How was EVO and who did you play as?

Is this a Jo Jo reference?EVO was the most fun I had last summer. I mostly went for Skullgirls (ironically) but I signed up for the Melee tournament since I wanted the opportunity. I played Marth and went 0-2. Did pretty well in my second match, though I'm not sure if that was my own skill or just because Marth is a good matchup against the Ice Climbers.
I am getting interested in the competitive play, and hearing that tournaments don't just have people trying to win (I mean that in the most literal sense possible, without any connotations) wasn't something I expected, but pretty neat.
But I'm not sure what to do... Anything you'd recommend doing before going to a tournament? Or just go there and get beat up eventually due to the unfamiliar environment?
You go to tournaments to learn as well, don't be afraid of going to tournaments because you're not very because if I'm right, they also do some friendly matches there so you can go there and get some tips from other players.
I want to go to one myself because most tournament footage I see of Greninja ends up with him getting wrecked and I want to see if I can change that. But alas, no money for trips outside of my country.
I'll tell you something I'M learning: you have to have a certain level of obsession to beat all the All-Stars on Hard.
Villager is just not built for it. His down smash doesn't launch, his up smash seldom hits, and his forward smash is so short-range.
And then there are the other ones that I come so close to winning, but I paced myself wrong on the healing items and I have so much damage in the last stage that they just have to slap me and I'm sent flying.
COMPLETIONISM—IT'S A SICKNESS.
You gotta believe me when I scare you away, all that I wish for is that you would stay![]()
My experience with Smashboards has been mostly positive at least, I mainly hang around the Greninja boards so I might just be lucky that the people there are very friendly overall.
The Japanese sure are exploring the character a lot more than everyone else.

In the tournament itself, yeah. But the FGC kinda operates on a different wavelength than most competitive game communities do in that even after the competition itself is over, they encourage players to play more games afterwards as opposed to just "watch the tournament and root for the people that beat you then go home". Because fighting game matches tend to happen so quickly, it's really easy to set up casual stations and just keep having matches going and going, which is where a lot of newbies can get tips from the more experienced players who might've gotten knocked out too.

Not for competitive play. That wall that results from the tail of the plane kills any viability it might have had because of easy infinites.
Melee legal stages are Battlefield, FD, Fountain of Dreams, Yoshi's Island, and Dream Land 64, with Pokemon Stadium being counterpick. The Brawl list is similar IIRC.

The Japanese are finding strange things about Greninja.
