I think he just really doesn't want to make a game like Melee again. Making a competitive fighting game, even accidentally, never seems to have been his goal.

Visit my Tumblr! I may say things. The Bureau ProjectNo wonder Xander Mobus sounds so confused when he announces him.
Bowser...Jr.?

Rules of the Internet 45. Rule 45 is a lie. Check out my art if you notice.I'll never understand how divisive competitive Smash is. Every game that has any element of competition will have a tournament scene of some kind. Some have greater staying power than others, most of the time by pure accident. Street Fighter II was an accident. Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 was an accident. Smash Bros (mostly Melee though) was an accident. Yet out of all of those it's Smash Bros that gets the brunt of the less competitive fanbase outcrying against it. What's the point, anyway? You're not going to stop it, it works extremely well for a competitive game and it's entertaining as a spectator game.
I'm not saying the competitive community isn't at fault at all (believe me, I know and get annoyed at certain players too) but I don't get why there has to be such a backlash against it.
Competitive players don't like randomness and inequality in their fighting.
Casual players don't like restrictive rules and over-balancing in theirs.
Separate they work fine, but when you combine them you have a conflict of beliefs that manifests not only in the fighting itself, but the meta-fighting—that is, fighting about how they should fight. ;p
Which is what makes fighting in Smash a bigger point of contention than other games. Things like first-person shooters and racers are already balanced because everybody mostly uses the same type of character, and regular fighting games are all on the same plane and seldom use any outside assistance...
But Smash has so many variables. The items, the stage hazards, and now the customizations, and even with Omega stages they still want to classify which of the normal stages are "tournament-worthy".

You gotta believe me when I scare you away, all that I wish for is that you would stayAnd both sides have their bad seeds. Overcompetitive jerks on one side, pompous pricks on the other, us stuck in the middle trying to have fun playing the game how we like because one side or the other keeps trying to drag us by the hair over to their side, if not then forcing us to pick a side then lambasting us for not picking their side.

Are explosions science?Greninja was quite clearly early, since he decided on him well before the character even had a name.
@edvedd: I didn't see Bowser Jr. in that interview. I don't understand how that conclusion came to.
I get why some characters were cut when time constraints came up(IC's and PT had issues relating to the 3DS' limitations, though. On the other hand, PT was pretty badly executed and had lag and other balance issues, so splitting them up was something I could see happening regardless of the 3DS' limitations).
Shadow?![]()
Basically all of this.
The writer was just beating around the bush for whatever silly reason.

I finally got around to freeing my Mario Amiibo from its plastic prison. Is "Fiyahballs" a good name for Mario, or is it more of a Yoshi name?

You have to actually be facing your target.

Sakurai is being narrow-minded though. Saying that if you want to play a competitive fighting game you should go play SF, Tekken and the like doesn't sound really fair considering that Smash has a much different gameplay style compared to any other fighting game and it's part of the reason people play the game competitively, because of everything it has to offer. People who have fun with competitive Smash possibly wouldn't enjoy other fighting games as much.
And a fighting game doesn't need loads of inputs to be competitive, Melee itself is proof of it.
