Every stage in 64 had hazards except for Battlefield, Final Destination, and Metal Mario's stage, and you couldn't even play those legitimately with others.
It's funny...ever since Brawl the "first" mode to play was VS. mode, when at first it was single-player.
I still miss those old stages though. Mushroom Kingdom was probably my favorite . I liked putting two different characters on the scales to see which one weighed more.
Also turning the camera to see what was right off the sides...Melee's Camera Mode let you turn the camera all the way around to the front.

You gotta believe me when I scare you away, all that I wish for is that you would stayAlso funny because those were the only stages to get to Melee.
I really liked Peach's Castle and Hyrule Castle. That inexplicable bumper, those inexplicable triangles on the sides, that inexplicable moving bridge on the bottom, and that inexplicable tornado on the roof of Hyrule Castle.
Things made a lot less sense back then.

You gotta believe me when I scare you away, all that I wish for is that you would stayThey weren't as intrusive as some of the later game's hazards though. One of the things that determines a stage's legality is how telegraphed the hazards can be. A bumper on Peach's Castle isn't nearly as intrusive as, say, a boss on a stage in 4.
What was 64's ban list again, anyway? I know Saffron City and Hyrule Castle are, but I can't remember the rest.
Edit: Ah,
'd. Guess I underestimated some of them.

It seems that nowadays, even hazards that are telegraphed well in advance are reason enough to ban a stage.
I wonder if it tells you anything that my favorite Melee stage was Big Blue. I was quite disappointed that it didn't make the cut for SSB 4.
"What's out there? What's waiting for me?"Just had the greatest team smash match of my life with some friends. Four people, 3 stocks, omega gerudo valley. Palutena, Sonic vs Pikachu, and me as ZS Samus.
Pikachu kinda got ganged up on leaving me alone, everyone with one stock. They're both trying to double team me but I grab Palutena and down throw her. She goes high and I follow her. He expects me to Boost kick her but I down B over her and meteor smash her down. to deathzone. Sonic tries to spin dash me midair immediately afterwards, misses and gets boost kicked into the sky. Both go down in like 5 seconds in one fell swoop.GG.
Never been prouder.
Louder than God's revolver and twice as shiny.
Well done.

As long as other players have fun, it doesn't matter.

Y'know what I can't even remember the overly long intro theme, so here

They even have the bearded bastard guy. Not that he holds a candle to Villager.
When you wish upon a side of beef, soon will come an end to all your grief3DS and Wii U Version comparison.
I'm still more impressed with how well the 3DS handles the game, even if it has to limit itself to do it.
EDIT: And I didn't realize the black/red electrical spark that signifies a (possible) killing blow was in the Wii U version.

Want some blueprints for stage builder
?
@"fun" stages being banned: Not only is there money at stake in tournaments, a lot of people don't like hazards. One person's fun is another person's stress. If I wanted my win to be decided by a roll of the dice, then I'd just roll some actual dice and get it over with.

"It's liberating, realizing you never need to be competent." — UltimatepheerHuh, some of those stages actually look interesting. I think my first attempt turned out simple but actually deceptively interesting, but it's a little hard to explain. How did everyone take those screenshots? Using the photo function of the game? Does it save them in a regular file format? I guess I'll have to find a compatible SD card somewhere... It's probably still really picky about those, too, isn't it?
Most people use the screenshot function, but to get the grid, I had to use Miiverse.
(I am really proud of my Pirate Ship and how I managed to implement the catapult. There's a large moving platform that acts as a trapdoor that'll drop you into a cannon if you walk over it carelessly, almost like the original.)

"It's liberating, realizing you never need to be competent." — UltimatepheerI am quite glad that Smash U has more competitively viable stages than most of the others. It's good to have variance in stage layout sometimes.
Also saying Smash isn't supposed to be played the way the tournaments work really doesn't hold any water now considering that the game was made with competitive players in mind so much that they made the Omega Stages and even an entire online mode to play like that.
Smash is meant to be played the way you want to and there's no "true" way to play it.
I have no idea how I'm supposed to finish that uncover-all-of-picture-at-end-of-classic-mode Challenge (the Golden Hammer is not a solution). I've tried using every item that comes my way, tried the fastest moves that hit the largest areas, but I still haven't gotten to even 95%. It's really frustrating how the closer you get, the less each hit is worth.
"What's out there? What's waiting for me?"

Depends on the game. Jigglypuff likes a lot of wiggle room to recover for instance, so given their way in Melee they would rather play on Dream Land 64 than, say, Yoshi's Story.
And this has been around since the 64 days, so yeah.
