Except Nintendo has expressed disappointment with low game sales, and have left the series to "cool off". They acknowledge it as a failure.
It's being included in SSB because, hated or not, it's the most recent Metroid game and one of the most visually detailed (Which also means they can just import a lot of models rather than design new ones). It's a failure but that doesn't make it Canon Discontinuity.

You cannot firmly grasp the true form of Squidward's technique! The CD-I games and Hotel Mario could easily be swept under the rug. Other M got a large presence at E3 and was poised to become a big budget cutscene heavy narrative driven game that a lot of people wanted from them (in hindsight it was a bad idea from the start). And it was coming off the very well liked Prime Trilogy. The backlash was huge, Metroid canon was put through a grinder, its story had bad implications that we best not get into, confidence was lost in the series, and it failed to grow the series in Japan like it was supposed to. They haven't stopped referencing it (probably because it's the latest Japan-made Metroid), but I highly doubt they liked the result.
It really didn't. It was a financial flop thanks to poor reviews and word of mouth, and you can now pick it up for like $5 from the bargain bin while many older Nintendo games still sell close to full price. Perhaps it sells better than shovelware, but that's hardly an accomplishment and it was a very high-budget game to boot. You're allowed to like Other M and debate opinions, but please don't try to argue against actual facts.
On that note, we're not bashing Other M. We're discussing its representation in Smash Bros. despite its poor reception.

You cannot firmly grasp the true form of Squidward's technique!Other M slightly underperformed for a Metroid game in Japan and massively underperformed in the traditional stronghold of the series in the US and the PAL territories. Without getting into the gory detail of the poorly-planned and very intrusive narrative, the game still was a major disappointment for Nintendo. We got an Other M stage most likely for the same reason we got a fair bit if Sonic '06stuff in Brawl: Development started when it was thought it could still be salvaged somewhat.
EDIT: And this is really late and goes over the same old topics. Excuse me.

I sure said that!Sma and Ken finally connect at long last...
So beautiful...
"Tell them to shut up and have some faith in me." - dead flashback guyFunnily enough, when i got the Gamestop message that the game would be available at midnight, it said 'Your Game', while OR full name was stated.
But yeah. Just like before I'm passing on venturing out into the night. Daylight is best for me.
When you wish upon a side of beef, soon will come an end to all your griefWell I have to wait until Christmas. I'm definitely getting it though because I sacrificed any other present. It will literally be the only thing I get but I will still have everything I want.
How did you get most of your hats? I barely find any no matter what I do.
Call me butter, because I am on a roll! 3ds friend code: 5258-0885-3903 Wii U: Bowser CharizardI got a lot of hats just by doing a combination of Classic runs and Trophy Rush. Once I was down to my final five hats though, I started playing Target Blast non-stop. the Home button trick works wonders for Classic, and all you have to do in Target Blast is press retry until you get a Custom part to spawn.
Shout-out to the Villager for making Target Blast really easy.
How many hats are there?

The Zelda CD-i games weren't anywhere near disasters. They just can't stand them because they didn't want them to happen(they tried to get out of the deal last minute and got court-cased about it. Stuff happens. It has zip to do with the quality, which again, was considered "So Okay, It's Average" at the time, and to this day, they still have fans. I talked to at least one person who preferred them over the DS games, except Zelda's Adventure, heh). They obviously aren't canon, but they were considered very mediocre by the critics and even the users. Really, their hatred is severely overstated. Nowadays, they are, but when they were released, their reviews were hardly bad.
Regardless, being purely discontinuity is more of a "we lost the case, we don't want to acknowledge it" situation. Since it's more than them just existing and being "not that great", but the actual baggage that comes along with their existence beyond that. I can't blame them trying to avoid that stuff. Losing a case is a blow to your PR image, after all.
