He's not even twice as big as Samus in Super.
◊ Scale him down like Bowser and Ganondorf are and it would look fine. And as much as I'm not fond of the Other M version, that one scales perfectly fine. And in Pyrosphere he already spends half the time on the ground.
Dude, Not Funny! (just like that guy who said not getting Mewtwo was worse than 9/11)

Well, he's also hunched over and folding his neck in, in that shot.
Which works fine in Super, since he mostly moves only his wings and tail during the battle. In Smash, he'd use his limbs more, even if just for moving about or grabbing people.

I have a message from another time...Yeah, I'm personally not too fond of comparing September 11, 2014 to September 11, 2001. Pretty unfortunate that all those disconfirmations fell on 9/11.
What is a fandom? A miserable little pile of flame wars! 3DS FC: 0387-9377-7408 PSN ID: Raven King SageBack during Brawl, Sakurai said that Villager couldn't work as a playable character. Now Villager is playable.
Also back during Brawl, Sakurai said that the speed was the issue hindering Ridley, and also claimed that he could make him work if he put in the effort in an interview after Brawl. He didn't mention the size.
So yeah, y'all gotta stop overreacting. For all we know, the surprise first party newcomer in the first trailer for Smash 5 could turn out to be Ridley. It wouldn't be the first time he changed his mind.
@Ridley: -shrug- He gave his reasoning, which seems to be that he felt that making Ridley small enough to be a viable player character would diminish (what Sakurai considers) his primary characteristic of being an intimating monster that is constantly using his aerial maneuverability along with his size to his advantage. There're also the implications that down-scaling Ridley would make him look or act odd thanks to his somewhat odd proportions, as well as the idea that Sakurai couldn't think of a way to convey Ridley's characteristics without making him game-breaking to play as and fight against.
Sure, characters like Kirby and Olimar were up-scaled, but their size (which is largely trivial) doesn't have anything to do with their character as far as fighting goes.
I dunno... I'm honestly just "meh" on the whole thing. I'm just glad that Ridley is available as a stage boss, which is the next best thing short of being an Assist Trophy, even if some people feel that that isn't enough.
Also that. Sakurai's had plenty of time to know how much Ridley was wanted as a playable fighter, so it's still very possible that he'll be able to pull it off (effectively) in a newer game in the series.

You mean where he's a good one and a half times as tall as Samus when seen at a distance? No, he looks quite fittingly large.
Mind, I'm not completely against Ridley, but I can see why people feel like shrinking him wouldn't work. Unlike Bowser, for example, scaling him down isn't quite as clear since he's not really large, simply long and thin. His tail alone is longer than most characters are tall.
http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/lb_i.php?lb_id=13239183440B34964700 Alfric's Fire Emblem Liveblog Encyclopedia!I've pointed out a few times before that Ridley is about 1.5 times as big as Samus in Melee's entrance at least. And that even that size also required altering his design quite a bit (which Sakurai also noted he wouldn't be entirely willing to do, for similar reasons as to why he won't shrunk him) to make him look decent.
Sakurai brings up most of the points I figured were the reason Ridley hasn't been in the series thus far, especially in how his main motivation for not doing it is having the characters represent their home series both individually and in comparison to each other.

The real reason Ridley isn't in is because Metroid is still comparatively niche and hasn't been active since the disaster known as Other M. While Nintendo hasn't dropped it, and I'm confident that we'll get a new game soonish, Metroid in general isn't in need of more promotion and attention right now. This is the man that made Charizard, Ice Climbers, R.O.B., Captain Falcon, and freaking Duck Hunt work out. He can make Ridley playable if he cares to.
I want Ridley because Metroid still deserves more representation, because I like him, and because contrary to what some people think, he is an important character to Nintendo in general. Main antagonist of one of their most critically acclaimed series, boss twice in Brawl, large focal point of Other M, boss in Nintendo Land, one of the reps of the villain take over in the e-shop, and extra special attention in his boss fight in Smash 4. Dixie and Toad are the only ones of his level that can match him from what I know.
Other M was not a disaster. It was an underappreciated breath of fresh air to the typical Metroid formula of run-left-and-right-and-shoot-up-and-down.
And yes I'm totally serious.
Ridley isn't in because he's too biiiiig who else would be the boss in Pyrosphere, MB?

Point taken. But if Metroid got a breakout success similar to Kid Icarus Uprising/Fire Emblem Awakening, we'd get someone for sure. And Ridley remains the obvious choice for that. Please ignore that Donkey Kong didn't get anyone even after the amazing success of Returns.
We're almost there. The Smash hype will be finished in less than 48 hours.

As far as Nintendo is concerned Other M was a disaster. Hence the series being essentially on hiatus. We could argue 'till we're blue in the face about personal opinions, but it's meaningless in the face of Nintendo's own response.
Less than 24 hours at this point, yeah? It's 12:01 AM, Thursday, here, at least, so it's 23:59 until the game is officially released.

You cannot firmly grasp the true form of Squidward's technique! How could it be a disaster...they put a stage of it in Smash 4. And I bet they'd put trophies in it from the game too.
If it was a disaster then they wouldn't have made any mention of it anywhere. Like...the Zelda CD-i games.
