I guess N64 might be higher on my list than Melee by virtue of me not hating it? ... I have a complicated relationship with this series. Had a strong love-hate relationship with Melee because it was great but also so terrible. And then Brawl was supposed to come out, and I got excited because I wanted to play online with people, and I got super-involved with the community and speculated and everything, getting so prolific I ended up placing second on a yearly forum members contest for Friendliest Member (and the only reason I didn't place first was because Gimpyfish won everything that year because of his Brawl demo coverage)... so yeah, I had high hopes for Brawl. And then it made me realize that there can be far worse still than Melee. Far, far worse. So yeah. I played Brawl and, sure, I had some fun with it along the way, but at this point the only redeeming quality it has to me is Squirtle and a cool plot. Melee is also terrible, but at least some beautiful flowers grew in that dirt. N64 is cool and all, but I can't play it anymore because it feels so terribly slow and I'm bored with the few characters and stages.
... Even 4 drives me up the wall sometimes, but it's the only one I can stand playing anymore, and sometimes I get to play against people and sometimes it's actually fun and interesting and does not make me want to punch a wall.
Played online against a friend today (lost, yes...), but the more maddening aspect was that it threw my entire setup for a loop, because i tried Pac-Man against him on a whim, and that was the only win i got in the series
Pac-Man having been eliminated in round one.
So now i'm going to throw the whole damn system to the drawing board and focus on For Fun online tryouts.

Flash 2 at least has gotten a lot better over the years. The anime characters are strictly Grandfather Clause due to already being programmed before they threw out the old plans in 2010 to focus on making it seem professional from then on, and as for it being clunky and stiff, the physics are a lot more refined now, and there are various guides to use controllers (with analog movement!) with it.

"It's liberating, realizing you never need to be competent." — Ultimatepheer64 > Melee > 4 (may change if Wii U ends up miraculously providing some stunners within the paltry month it has left) > Brawl
I happen to find 64 charming and generally impressive for when it came out, and Melee greatly expanded on it with interesting concepts that could be easily built upon (events, Adventure, Multi-Man* , etc.) in only a few years time, albeit while removing some of its predecessor's more colorful aspects like unique intros, the victory screen background, and Board the Platforms.
Meanwhile 4 and particularly Brawl feel incredibly bogged down by decisions that range from esoteric to outright dumb ("what to do with the remaining space for our double-layered discs... oh I know! Let's include a dozen timed demos ripped straight from VC that nobody wanted!"), and I couldn't bring myself to care about the story or gameplay of the mode that apparently took such a high portion of the latter's development time, especially after the first playthrough. 4, naturally, seems to be an improvement in this regard, but it's fairly telling that literally the only thing I'm looking forward to is the gameplay itself.

"Tell them to shut up and have some faith in me." - dead flashback guyI actually ended up being way better at Melee than Brawl when I got it, which surprised me. I guess I'm just more of an offensive player. I'm currently best at 4, not that that's saying much. And I don't try mods in fear of me accidentally screwing up my systems.
So I guess for me, it's 4 = Flash 2 > Melee = Brawl > 64 > Flash (from what I've tried)
"And kung fu is a terrible way to run a company" - alliterator
Yeah, they don't talk about Flash 1.
Melee > Brawl > 64 for me. 64 is fun and all, but not for very long. And Arceus help you if you're playing it with an N64 controller, because holy crap is it stiff.
I prefer Melee to Brawl strictly for gameplay. Brawl just feels so uncomfortable and unnatural to me. Its content is great though, which is why I really want to get Project M. Best of both worlds.

"It's liberating, realizing you never need to be competent." — UltimatepheerWhy grab, even? Smash attack charge away.

x4: That's weird. Even on my crap computer it doesn't lag that much.
I don't see what's hard to understand about the new characters' moves, though. At least, what's harder than some of the canon characters' moves. The only ones I've really seen people have trouble with were Goku's Kaio-Kennote and Black Mage's Stopnote .
EDIT: "God's Kaio-Ken"?! So much autocorrect...

"It's liberating, realizing you never need to be competent." — UltimatepheerI'm so used to the Game Cube controller that even playing 64 with a Wii Classic controller felt awkward to use.
If we're using mods... Project M > Brawl > Melee > Flash 2 > 64. Brawl edges over Melee because it's easier for my friend to get into.
"What's out there? What's waiting for me?"My problem with the 64 controller is the control stick. Playing Smash Bros. with a control stick that stiff makes gameplay feel kinda restricted and awkward. No wonder fighters never flourished on that console.
Come to think of it, did the 64 have any other notable fighting games?

Brawl and Melee are sort of equal to me. I don't plan on ever playing 64 and I haven't gotten 4 yet.
The legend has returned.
