@Druplesnubb: Brawl was the only time we knew of that. Melee and 4 might be different.

I actually am very disappointed that there was no dialogue in the SSE. I agree with no voice acting, though. But I cannot tell everything by visuals alone. Also, the fact that the original opening cutscene, the one that told us the very beginning of the story being gone really hurt the story for me.

I only like the cutscenes due to the FMV's, truthfully. They were greatly animated, no doubt about that. They worked hard on 'em and made 'em look good.

[up][up] I firmly believe that an image is worth a thousand words, so I found the SSE much more enjoyable than I probably would have found it if it contained any sort of dialogue. I agree with the removed cutscene thing, though. It makes things a bit confusing if you don't know about it.

Being "worth a thousand words" doesn't mean it's easy to understand for all. Depends the person.

I found it confusing by default and I honestly couldn't tell most of what was going on outside of a few cases. I vastly prefer reading/hearing what is going on, as it helps me properly imagine things where applicable. I'm not great an understanding pure videos. I always want to hear/read something, since it makes a world of difference to me. It helps my immersion immensely. When I watch any playthrough, I almost always turn it off if the user doesn't bother to talk and put in their own entertainment value into it(of course, respectively, some people aren't too great at speaking/annoying voices). To put it very simply, I don't want to watch nothing but gameplay, I want to hear what the player thinks, since I'm watching someone play it, not playing it myself. I think many can agree that talking during a cutscene with voice acting is a bad thing though. [lol]

I'm glad there wasn't dialogue because it would have been awkward for characters like Mario, Link, Ness, Lucas, and Marth.

Especially Marth, who would have had to speak for the home audience being from a very dialogue-heavy series and all.

[up][up] I think we're polar opposites. I'd rather watch a walkthrough of a game than watch a let's play with some guy talking non-stop [lol].

All can legitimately speak according to the games(that's how the characters understand them. The only where Mario might not is Super Mario RPG, since he instead does a visual presentation by turning into characters. In the rest, they clearly understand him, especially the RPG's. Also, to be fair, most of them have a voice, just not voiced dialogue). Not all show voices.

Written dialogue is actually realistic enough. I should've been clear; I think that would've been a great option to turn on. I wouldn't like it by default, since FMV's are best without written dialogue, but it would help some understand the story better. Although to be fair, a few cutscenes with a very tiny amount of voices might've worked. I'm not talking about a ton of voiced dialogue. Just a few snippets. Notice how Snake barely talks once in a blue moon. Something like that.

Now, not every cutscene needs it. A few could've worked well. Like the first one that introduced Tabuu. As for written dialogue(think OOT's usage of it), it might've helped make a few moments easier to understand. I am glad that it was done in a way that doesn't make it too hard to understand. It wasn't severely confusing(thankfully), although I couldn't get all of it myself.

The thing about cutscenes is they take a crapton of development time. Putting them in was cool. Most of the development time being spent on that and the SSE somewhat hurt Brawl though. The lack of individual target tests, the lack of mini-games during Classic, no Bonuses besides a very tiny slew(which I do believe wouldn't be that easy to just throw in. You have to trigger each one to appear and give you points. So it does take a while to do). Speaking of, Smash 3DS outright removed them. >_< I hope they're back for the Wii U version. I'm guessing Classic being so super short, they decided it wasn't needed. I can concur there. If it's like Brawl's, with a super short Classic, it doesn't add much. All-Star would've benefited slightly more though.

[up] Considering I'm on various tabs/webpages besides the video itself, the talking matters to me. It gives me a hint of what's going on. That, and let's be honest, if they can be entertaining, isn't that alone worth it? Presuming you aren't solely watching the video. I mean, if you do multiple things at once, the talking gives you an idea of what's going on~ It may help that I actually find when they have a whiny voice to be hilarious. It's annoying in major situations like discussions/at work, but it can be entertaining to read/hear respectively for some.

Supposedly he says it in this video. But that was around Brawl's launch so who knows how that's changed,

On another note, if we're discussing voice acting, they could easily just have characters that normally talk talk, and characters that don't just do normal reactions. Pr just use text boxes like in some fighting game story modes. And it's not like Mario or Wario haven't talked before.

Maybe the reason Ganondorf is so bad in all the games is because Sakurai overestimates his power due to his own preference for the character? Or in other words, Sakurai hates Meta Knight confirmed!

Well, it did take Sakurai a long time to figure out that Slow and Powerful is not an inherently good counter to to Weak(er) but Fast.

[up][up][up] I'm talking about having dialogue boxes, since it fits way more characters than voice acting. It also means that changing it up only requires some translation and to fix it up for appropriate audiences. Where Japan might use damn, we might get dang, respectively. Somewhat justified since certain swear words in our languages mean nothing to them.

That, and it's cheaper than getting a new voice actor for everyone. A lot never have spoken either, voice acting-wise. Some have had dialogue boxes despite this. Some both. I mean, most have spoken in official comics, at least, so it's not that bad if they do. The only one it's weird with is some Pokemon at best. tongue

As much as I would love to have a fully-acted game featuring Mario and co. (Charles Martinet is a gifted improv comedian, and Mario can be absolutely hilarious if you give him the chance to talk), if he starts getting full dialogue in an internationally-released game, they'd have to get different voice actors to step in to do the voice in the respective language.

That's just one example, of course.

Don't Mario and Luigi have actual dialogue at the end of Luigi's Mansion 2?

I would have preferred it if they had actual dialogue in the cutscenes. Then again I think Nintendo's adherence to the Heroic Mime trope is annoying anyway.

Also, the Ice Climbers and Polar Bear trophies not having a series emblem is one of the saddest things I've ever seen.

[up][up][up] Should we start looking for the King of Evil Cats? He might be trying to look for the Meowforce as we speak. ...sorry.

[up][up] Do it. You know you want to tongue

[up] Tbh, I wasn't too fussed that SSE had no voice acting. Did make it a little difficult to figure out the story though, but it didn't spoil it either.

Also, I am 100% fed up with Melee players now. Smash 4 has only been out 1 week here and they have already torn it to shreds, called nearly every new thing or change rubbish or disappointing and have even tried to petition Sakurai to remove a mechanic which was in Melee anyway (DI, now known as Smash DI or Vectoring as some call it now). One irl even called my main (Lucario) the ultimate noob character who rewards you for playing badly (and that the Rage mechanic also does that too). Needless to say, I was a little *censored* off before that day is over.

It's also pretty sad when someone says they are a Smash Bros competitive player and I end up assuming they are going to be an arrogant Melee player, because of how numerous and vocal those guys are in the fandom. Really wish that wasn't the case. sad So far, the only competitive Smash player I have heard giving Smash 4 a chance is Zero.

To be fair, vectoring and DI are different mechanics. DI changes the direction of knockback; Vectoring changes the amount.

The concerns people have with vectoring are that it can be used to nullify most combos, hampering the potential for offensive play, which wasn't an issue with DI.

By no means do I think what they're doing is right, but I at least understand where they're coming from in that aspect.
