Roy is bad in both senses. He's basically a Mary Sue in the plot, but quite possibly the worst lord in the entire series in gameplay. He also manages to make his father look like The Most Interesting Man In The World.
Lyn is also basically the series' sole Iaijutsu Practitioner, so she gets unique points for that.

Wow, that's quite something. I mean, Eliwood is possibly the most boring thing to ever have graced my Gameboy Advance. And then he also had the gall to be a pretty lousy unit as well. Thank god he had two far more interesting and capable co-lords to share the stage with, or I probably wouldn't be the FE fan I am now.
Let's just say there is a very good reason they went with Ike instead of Eliwood as representative of the "international" Fire Emblem games.
I like Ike.

Though we'd probably be lying by omission if we didn't mention that other, perhaps more fanservicey, factors probably play a role in her popularity, even if she's actually a well-written and interesting character.
Take Eliwood and imagine that he never made a single wrong (or even possibly wrong seeming) decision, ignored his advisors and was constantly right in overriding them, promoted later, and had a worse promotion (though with a super-bitchin' legendary weapon).

Fanservice? Whatever do you mean?
That's good.

I was just being clear that if we're going to address why she's popular, may as well mention the elephant in the room. It was not intended as an invitation to start posting fanart of any degree of fanserviceyness.
@Blueblur: She has green hair because, as a character in what amounts to an anime turn-based-strategy/JRPG, you gotta have blue/green/purple/pink hair.

Well, shit. Someone already started posting fanservice, might as well keep going
◊.
x3 If I recall correctly, everyone from the region she was born in has odd (to us) hair colors.
Also, I seem to be one of the few people who likes Roy.

"I like girls, but now, it's about justice."We like Roy! We like Roy! We like Roy!
The world will look up and shout "Save us", and I'll look down and whisper "Too bad, Waluigi Time" Vote Loki 2016Though I should note that I've never played a Fire Emblem title before, so I'm probably missing something. I am glad to hear that she's interesting at least; I've heard a lot of fans say that Blazing Sword was pretty bad story-wise for a FE title back when it was released, so I never bothered with it (yay GameFAQs).
...While I'm here talking about FE, I have The Sacred Stones or whatever on my 3DS due to being an Ambassador. Is that a decent title to start with or should I shell out money for Awakening and hope that it grabs me?

Also, a real badass lady, which there's a shortage of.
She was significantly more interesting than the actual main lord of that game,
"It's so hard to be humble, knowing how great I am."
