Really now, Fem!Robin is just as much of a character as Male!Robin even if the latter is the one who was promoted in the trailer, they both have a render after all, unlike Male!WFT and Female!Villager. Whether Lucina is a moveset clone or an alternate costume, does it really matter as long as she's in?
Yes, yes it does. She's her own full character now. Wii Fit Trainer, Robin, and Villager are all one character each, just with different gender options because they can have it.
Your own slot kind of does matter. It's an actual character, not just a reference to them. You're never playing as Blood Falcon, for instance. It's still Captain Falcon overall. A neat reference to other characters is cool, but it doesn't literally make it them.
Shadow? That's part of why Lucina was updated from an alt to a character.
You only need your own moveset to be an actual playable character. Voice packs don't really count. Wii Fit Trainer can be male or female, but it's still one playable character. This applies no less for Robin or Villager. References =/= Character. It's always a moveset factor. This is why Sakurai said Brawl has 39 characters, because he didn't count any form of alts or slots, but the exact number of movesets.
Shadow?-shrug- If Lucina was an alternate costume for Marth with her own voice pack and maybe even being refered by name in the victory screen or something, it's pretty much the same thing as it is now, except at least for now all that she has is a slightly different mechanic to her moves, not counting her as a character just because she wouldn't have her own little space in the character select screen despite that she's still pretty much just Fem!Marth just sounds petty and dumb for me.
Why? As I've said before, as many have said before, she's not taking up a slot for some other character. Besides, I'm pretty sure she's a favorite among FE fans. If it doesn't make sense to you, it's likely it does to someone else. And it most assuredly does to Sakurai.

I'm sorry, but they just aren't. They do not play the exact same, so it's not the "same difference" whatsoever.
Playing similarly does not mean they play the same. I'm not sure if this is some ridiculous semantics, but what you're trying to pass off is just plain false.
A Moveset Clone is absolutely not the same thing as an Alt in Smash Bros. Every single one of those, NPC or otherwise, has differences in the end. Could be knockback, extra elemental effects, speed, or actual damage dealt.
That might apply to other fighting games, but it doesn't here. It's a different game with a different set of rules for how clones work. And they're always different from the original in some way. Meaning they don't ever play the same.
Shadow?I don't really mind if she's an alt or a character herself and I don't think she's just stealing the spot of a character or anything like that. I just think that if people complained about her being just a Marth alt even if she's pretty much just Fem!Marth in appearance as it is would be pretty silly. My mentality is "if he/she is in the game, then I don't care if it's playable/boss/assist/background/alternate costume as long as he/she is in."

This reminds me of this picture from when Brawl came out...
I wish there would be an Event in Smash 4 called "Return of the Melee Five" where you would have to fight all of them.
The fact of the matter is, other people do care how they're represented. So it's not good enough if it's not what they want exactly(often as playable). You really should respect other people's opinions on that.
I couldn't even tell what you were saying with the "same difference" bit was an opinion. It came off as a fact, which is why it had to be made clear it was definitely wrong. But your opinion is that it doesn't matter overall is an entirely different story. That's completely respectable.
Shadow?I'd like to bring up that I liked Lucina as a character, but how they implemented her just comes across as all kinds of half-assed and lazy to me.
"It's liberating, realizing you never need to be competent." — UltimatepheerI know, I know, but... How much development time does it take to just change a couple of numbers? Make her have different weight or speed or something? Anything?

Sakurai specifically said she has the same speed as him. I'm not making assumptions — he specifically said that.

My main thing is that she's clearly visible on the character select. Rather than "hidden" behind an alternate costume switch.
